our work crews have been on the outer loop of the beltway. crews still working down on the rock creek parkway at kennedy center. they'll be there for another hour. one direction at a time. don't forget in northwest, closure at 15th street at euclid. structure fire. euclid is blocked at 16th and 14th. sounds like we have a new crash, 66 eastbound at 123. apparently a couple of left lanes blocked. maybe by the time you get on the roadway they'll have them cleared. beware, back to you. jack, thank you. following breaking news in the district this morning. more than 100 firefighters had to work to put out this blaze at the ecuadorian embassy this morning. >> this is at 15th and euclid streets northwest. one firefighter hurt at this fire. they tweeted this video of the two alarm fire. you can see the flames shooting out from the roof there. heavy fire. it took them about two hours to fight the fire. still no wor

fire. crews remain at the scene right now putting out hot spots. some new details this morning about students and staff at american university. they're hurt -- they're feeling hurt after hateful images appeared on campus yet again. ten of these confederate flag posters with cotton branches attached to them found at three different locations t. happened the same time the school unveiled a new campus center. news 4's adam tuss will join us live for a look for the search for the person who is responsible. this morning parents are waking up to another day of searching for their daughter. >> they described her as a hard worker. 19-year-old never showed up for work at a military base more than a week ago. news 4's justin finch is live in

>> reporter: aaron, good morning. ashante was a student at wise high school. she stayed in touch with her teachers. they like her family are surprised to hear that she has somehow up and vanished. her family, as you mentioned, now in virginia not vowing to leave until she is found. that is what her parents told crowds gathered at a candle light vigil just on sunday. their daughter not seen since the 19th. the last sign of her, her mini cooper entering the j.e.b. at little krieg naval base where she worked. among three points the fbi is now focusing on. take a look at this map here. workers found her phone three miles away in a dumpster still ringing. her car was discovered five miles northwest of the base. a neighbor says it had been there for days.

ashante's mom is still far from giving up. >> my mom instinct tells me she's okay. she's scared and she's hurt, but she's okay. i feel that she's okay. she's still -- she's still with us. i feel that. >> reporter: and as you heard, her parents not giving up hope. the fbi having some points of interest to focus on here. they are now offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to finding ashante. back in to you in the studio. >> justin finch. justin, thank you. now to the latest assault on a metro bus driver. metro transit police say this woman, allison thomas of northwest dc was arrested after assaulting a w 1 metro driver with a bottle of sunny delight. she got on the bus with two children and became upset after the driver drove off before they were seated. you might remember another assault that happened last month, this one on the x 2 metro bus. a different woman threw a cup of

simple assault. it's 5:05. now to the developing crisis in puerto rico. the governor says there is no running water. only 5% of the island has power. today ten d.c. police officers will head to san juan to help the police force. they will bring supplies and satellite phones. president trump will visit puerto rico next tuesday. here on the east coast, the high surf from tropical storm maria. more than 10,000 visitors have been told to leave but some are staying behind. beach erosion could be worse than north carolina. chuck bell is standing by with the latest on maria. we know, chuck, it's been downgraded from hurricane to tropical storm? >> yeah. still an awful lot of wind and wave action over the open waters of the atlantic. that is particularly harsh on the outer banks and

virginia. it's the extended period of time with the wind and the rain that is doing the beach erosion. 60 plus-mile-an-hour winds on the other side of it. not exactly something to be taken all that lightly if i could finally just spit it out. meanwhile, there we go, 70-mile-an-hour sustained winds now as of 5:00 a.m. advisory. that's new information that just came in. a new forecast track. still going north at 5 miles per hour. within 24 hours it should be going almost due east. then it will really pick up steam and race out over the open waters. by sunday and monday it's getting close to scotland. that's a long ways from here. we'll have the five day forecast coming up. chuck, thank you. so twitter is considering users some more space to express ourselves. >> no fun. social media giant is testing out new

warren married the woman's former husband years later in 2002. hateful messages on the american university campus are sparking anger and concern this morning. >> confederate flags were posted across the school. people there say they will not be intimidated. adam tuss is live with more on reaction and what police are doing. adam? >> reporter: good morning, aaron. yeah, police are actively investigating this case. all of this happening over the past day. take a look. these confederate flag images were poetsed at three different locations here on campus of american university. they were confederate flags that had pictures of cotton branches on them as well. this, of course, is rattling some nerves here on the campus of american university. all of this is coming at the same day that an anti-racist center was announced and unveiled here at american university. so obviously tensions a bit high here on campus. but at this point no details on who

what was happening. this is going to be a big test for the new president here at american university who just took over recently. obviously has been dealing with some pretty high tensions on campus. now has to deal with the images of the confederate flags. ten we're told at three different locations on campus. >> adam, you mentioned this anti-racism center was just made. that was the result of some racist images, messages left on campus earlier this year. anyone been caught in that case? >> reporter: no. actually, they're still looking to see if both of these cases could be connected. what you're talking about, aaron, is the bananas found flung news. the person who's responsible for the anti-racist center saying he put out a message saying don't be deterred by this. don't be fearful. this is not

find out what's going on. >> police on the ground made the arrest and seized a high powered laser from the car. facing criminal charges. >> 5:35. students returning to potomac high school this morning after a scare on school grounds. news 4 captured this exclusive video after officers took a 10th grade boy into custody. the student was found with a gun yesterday. this all started when a teacher spotted that boy exchanging cash with another teen who was trespassing. a school resource officer was imme he had yeah italy called and the school was put on lockdown for about two hours. police are still looking for the other trespassing teen. today the teenager who was murdered while defending himself here in d.c. will be laid to rest. zaier kelly was killed while

the city. he was 16 years old and an a.p. student and track star. neighbors of the bethesda home you see here are demanding some answers this morning. >> firefighters say they found hoarding conditions at this home after a deadly fire. that's not the strangest part of this story. news 4's chris gordon exmains what they found. >> reporter: bethesda neighbors are waiting to find out what caused this fire. >> want to know if there was anything wrong with the house itself? was it a gas line? whether there was something strange going on there and we just don't know. >> reporter: investigators are finding underground tunnels dug around the house. a piece of heavy earth moving equipment sits in the backyard. investigators are collecting and testing chemicals that are stored here. they're finding electrical wiring and hoarding conditions t

what do we know? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. ashanti finished up school last week. the fbi continues to connect more dots in this case. her parents back on sunday were at a candlelight vigil down there asking the public for help. the fbi now on this case, too. a $10,000 reward being offered for tips that find her. part of the fbi focus is on this video showing ashanti's cream color cooper arriving at the j.e.b. naval base where she worked. that was from the early morning of september 18th when her car was last seen. there are other points of interest as well in this case. take a look on this map including where her car was found so that car had been there fo
