plan ahead for that. back to you. jack, thank you. breaking news now. playboy magazine founder hugh hefner is dead. >> he died of natural causes on wednesday at the iconic playboy mansion. hefner was 91 years old. he started a magazine in the 1960s and is credited with ushering in the sexual revolution. he was also known for the lavish parties thrown at the mansion. >> the tributes have been pouring in overnight on social media. hefner is still a top trending item this morning. ryan seacrest, larry king and jesse jackson offering condolences. >> playboy made headlines when it released an issue with no nudity. less than a year later, the magazine went back to publishing the same way it always has to make money. >> he died of natural causes. while the employ bay mansion was sold last year to the co-founder of hostess, it included a provision to allow hugh hefner to spend the rest of his lif

morning. people will be a little on edge this morning when they return to work at a fairfax office building. it was a crime scene just a few hours ago after a man shot himself to death. police say the gunman, 52-year-old john francis wood, shot himself on the fourth floor of a law office. police don't know whether wood intended to shoot anyone else but was prevented. coming up, news 4's justin finch will explain why the shooting sent parents running to the office building. today the former prince george's county teacher's aide convicted of federal sex crimes is headed back to court. caraway will be in upper marlboro on local charges. he's accused of sex crimes against children at judge sylvania woods elementary school. he was indicted on 270 counts, including 23 counts of sex abuse and 40 counts of first degree sex offense. caraway received aed

follow tracee wilkins on twitter for the latest from the courtroom. 5:05 right now. a woman is suing massage envy after she says her therapist went too far. this comes from a string of assaults in maryland and the district. news 4 broke the story last week. four women say they were assaulted by the same massage therapist. the lawsuit names massage envy, the owners of the franchise on wisconsin avenue northwest and the therapist himself who is facing charges. the woman is suing for $25 million in damages. this morning, a group of d.c. police officers is getting ready to hand out supplies in puerto rico. the officers will be on the island for the next three days. also today, congressional democrats plan to call for additional help for puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. one week after hurricane maria and there's still no drinking water for nearly half of the people in puerto rico. coming up, we'll tell you how one fairfax woman is desperately trying to get her

terrifying moments for parents when they heard an active shooter was in the same building as a children's preschool. police responded in full force. >> yesterday, a man shot himself inside an office building in fairfax that also houses a preschool. no kids were hurt. but for parents, the entire situation was traumatic. news 4's justin finch is live outside of the building now with reaction from those parents. justin, good morning. i can't imagine how scared they were for those moments. >> reporter: eun, good morning. scared indeed. lots of moms and dads of course, happy to have their children close this morning. take a look. that's their preschool back there. upstairs on the fourth level is where police say that active shooter opened fire just scarily close. those children were among the hundreds evacuated wednesday afternoon. there are children inside this office building on the 8,000 block of gatehouse road. sharing space here off of

police got the children off to luther jackson middle where they were safely returned to their parents. now, that's also where we met a dad who talked about the frantic phone call from his wife wednesday afternoon. >> it was my wife. she was a person who tried to pick up the children. but there were no -- police worked absolute perfect, well done. >> reporter: what a relief for this father to have his child back in his arms. it appears to be isolated to that floor. the daycare is thankfully on the first level. back in to you. >> justin finch. thank you. a rock climber died in a national park. >> dozens of people were on or near he will captain in yosemite

of federal sex crimesds he pled guilty to sexually abusing kids at an elementary school. he heads to court today for a hearing on local charges and faces additional prison time. people will be a little on edge returning to work at a fairfax county office building. it was a crime scene late wednesday evening after a man shot himself to death. fairfax county police are trying to figure out whether 52-year-old john francis wood n intended to hurt others but was prevented. it happened in a law office. a preschool is in the same building. no one but wood was hurt in the shooting. we may never get the answers how otto warmbier died in north korea after being returned to the u.s. from north korea. there was a new report that says his cause of death is undetermined and no way to know if he was tortured as his

parents believe. warmbier was arrested last year. he was sent back home in june. 5:34 now. this morning, students at american university want police to catch the man who is suspected of hanging symbols of hate around campus. take a look at the surveillance video from tuesday night. the man enters different buildings as a construction worker and it's hard to identify him because, look, he's wearing that hard hat and it's covering his face. campus police believe the man hung ten confederate flag posters and cotton. this isn't the first incident of hate at a.u. this year. we've posted a timeline in the nbc washington app. georgetown university police are investigating repeat cases of hate and bias on the school's campus. there have been five incidents this month alone. elevators, a bathroom and trash can were vandalized with anti-semitic graffiti.

they're devoting full resources to finding the people working with d.c. police to catch a suspect. the incidents happened at the visual arts building a few dorms, including three separate cases in the lxr residence hall. we now know a 21-year-old man was killed in that mysterious fire in bethesda. we're still waiting to find out how it started. take a look. this is askia calfra. he was trapped in the basement when it went up in flames. firefighters are not ready to tell us the cause of the fire. they found underground tunnels on the property. boarding conditions, chemicals and electrical wiring. fall activities are something we all look forward to. but not at the risk of getting sick. now we know that five more people have gotten swine flu after having contact with sick pigs at the anne arundel county

and other fairs. none of the people has hospitalized. seven people got sick at the charles county fair. swine flu cannot be transmitted from human to human but pigs can pass it on easily. wash your hands if you feel like you've gotten too close to one of those animals. warning for you now this morning if you're taking your family to the park. montgomery county says wasps can be in the places where your kids play. playgrounds, benches and trees. they want you to call if you see any wasps nest this fall. they're looking for food, which means they will attack you if you get in their way. desperate times in puerto rico. food and supplies running out. why one local woman says time is running out for her relative on the island. plus, basketball bombshell.

overhaul the country's tax system for the first time in highlights. this plan simplifies the tax bracket from 7 to 3. it doesn't specify what incomes fall into the brackets. tax credits for kids under 17 would increase for an unspecified amount. there would be a $500 credit for individuals caring for a family member of any age. the estate tax, which some call the death tax, would be repealed. news 4's tracie potts joins us live from capitol hill. >> tracie, as far as the proposals, they benefit wealthier folks. in indiana, the president talked about the benefit to the middle class, too. tell us about that. >> he said first of all, it will be easier to file with a postcard as opposed to a long 1040 even online. also, the tax brackets are changing. democrats point out that the top tax bracket for wealthier americans is coming down while the lowest one is going up a bit from 10 to 12%.
