a legend. new this morning, people are leaving tributes at the playboy mansion where he died. you're looking at flowers on the gate of the mansion. hefner, whom many called hef, was 91 years old. >> spepeople say he ushered in sexual revolution in the 1960s and was known for lavish parties he threw and the lifestyle he lived. his son cooper said his father defined playboy's lifestyle and ethos. >> playboy made headlines last year when it released a firstish up with no nudity. a month later it went back to publishing nude photos. terrifying moments for parents when they heard an active shooter was in the same building as their children's preschool. you can see in the video, police responded in full force. >> yesterday, a man shot himself inside an office building in fairfax. it also houses a preschool. as news 4's justin finch

but for parents, the entire situation was traumatic. >> what a scare for those moms and dads yesterday. no doubt they are holding their children close this morning. because right behind us there, that's your children's preschool. falls church mer field. if you look on the fourth floor, that's where police say that shooting took place on wednesday afternoon just scarily close to their children down below. those children were among the hundreds evacuated wednesday afternoon. the school inside this office building on gatehouse road off of gallows road here. fairfax county police got the children to luther jackson middle school where they were returned to their parents. that's also where we met a father who talks about a frantic phone call that he got from his wife wednesday afternoon. >> it was my wife. she was trying to pib ck up the

perfect. >> you're stunned. you know, you don't expect this to happen. obviously in the building where your son's school is. >> fairfax officials say that shooting appears to be isolated to that fourth floor up there. that daycare is safely down below from that. no children were hurt and that building is clear to open today. in merrifield, i'm justin finch. back to you. >> justin, thank you. it's 6:04. this morning, a woman is suing massage envy after she says her therapist went too far. this fallout comes from the string of alleged sexual assaults at massage envy locations in maryland and the district. news 4 broke the story last week. four women say they were assaulted by the same massage therapist. the lawsuit names massage envy, the owners of it on wisconsin avenue and the therapist facing charges. she's suing for $25 million in

that engulfed the ecuadorian -- yesterday morning. it took 125 firefighters about two hours to get these flames under control. we know two firefighters went to the hospital. they did not have serious injuries. investigators say the fire appears to be accidental. while you were sitting in traffic on the beltway, a member of the president's cabinet was flying on a private plane. the president says he is not happy with the health and human services secretary, tom price. politico first reported that price spent half a million dollars of taxpayer money using private jets since may. sources even say that though the president is upset, he doesn't plan to fire price. 6:05. today the metro board will meet and at the top of the agenda, it's riders safety. according to the news partners at wtop, documents shows that metro's reporting system and overall safety goals have not been fully achieved yet.

earlier this month we showed you the erosion causing the pavement to crumble. after our report, they began to notify community groups that the damage would be fixed. the work will last until 7:00 tonight and that trail we know just opened back in june. this morning, we have the results of a new study that shows exactly where our traffic is the worst. we have ideas on this, right? depending where you're going. >> d.c., behind new york and l.a. on that list. so we're driving through some of the worst traffic hotspots in the country right now. the latest global traffic scorecard shows i-95 leads the way in delays, specifically between exit 133a in stafford county and the fairfax county parkw parkway. lost time and productivity. that stretch of road is followed by i-95 nor at exit 143 and the beltway at route 201 in maryland. researchers say these roads are costing all of us in terms of wasted

i'm in your house. the carver family was banished. they were kicked out of here for doing really bad things. and so this haunted house is the professional haunted house all for the month of october. you guys can come here and see some really scary things. there she is. janice carver. preschool teacher by day and a creepy 5-year-old by night. you can come through the house. all kinds of gimmicks and setups in here. raise money for a very good cause. this is a big fundraiser. melissa high seth is the executive director of the arc of loudoun. the nonprofit here that gets money and proceeds from this month-long event. tell me how you are able to serve children. this is for children and adults with special needs. >> absolutely. the arc of loudoun is a nonprofit that has a wide range

have a great hauptnted house around the area. i'll double dog dare you. i can go to the haunted house. i'll go twice. once for me and once more eun. outside, it is anything but cool, though. september this month has finished after a wet, cold start. it is finished out a very warm and dry month. we've only had .04 of an inch of rain since the 7 ft. three weeks in a row with hardly a drop in rainfall. we're almost 2 inches behind in rain for the month of september. three 90-degree days this week alone. now, temperatures for the month are 1.5 degrees above average. maria, the tropical air, the summertime, it was around that air mass from maria, it's being pushed out today. canadian weather muscle going to push the heat and humidity out of here. canada has taken over our weather pattern the next couple of days. you wouldn't notice it this morning. temperatures are already at

space museum and then tries for some reason to get inside. by passing a sign right there that said the museum opens at 10:00 a.m. so no surprise that he is met by an officer who tells him there's no way he's getting inside. in turn, the male on the scooter threatens harm to that officer and somehow in their back and forth, some how, sam way that man was able to get away on that scooter. the relief is that the officer was not hurt. there is no damage to the building. but there is concern now about that man who is somewhere out here and we just don't know what he might do. park police are out there looking for this man. trying to bring him into custody again. he tried to get in that museum but was not allowed in. the officer is okay. we're live on the mall. i'm justin finch. back to you. >> justin, thank you. the other breaking story this morning. the man who founded playboy has died. >>

supply as it is an issue of distribution. the governor says that many private sector truckers haven't shown up to make deliveries. so many of the supplies are sitting in storage at san juan's main port. part frt reason for this, of course, for the water crisis, is the collapse of the power grid. there's not electricity to pump and treat this water and also a telecommunication breakdown. no cell phone service to -- it had canceled a cruise. it's now using one of the ships to evacuate people and that is expected to happen later today. aaron and eun, you'll remember that hurricane irma knocked out power to much of the island. 75% of the island. some of the posts have been without power for weeks and expected to continue for months. >> gabe gutierrez in san juan. more from him on the "today" show in a few moments. along with port rick

u.s. virgin islands are in dire need of help right now. it's harder to get stories and pictures from the virgin islands and harder to get to as we. you can donate to a number of charities to help out. we've compiled a list on the nbc washington app. search, ways to help. there are people in fairfax county right now who don't know where they may sleep tonight. >> that is a reality for people living in a brand-new fairfax county high-rise near leesburg pike. they have until this afternoon to get out. derrick ward now with the reason for the mass eviction notice. derrick? >> reporter: apparently, it has something to do with the sprinklers and the trash chutes. this building went up in july of 2016, almost completely full. but yesterday notices were posted from the virginia department of compliance that says that the sprinkler system and the trash chutes aren't working properly in rendering this uninhabitable. we spoke to a couple of residents. one said he hasn't heard about this. another says he was told the

we spoke to people around here. there have been issues with the building since it went up. most recently when there was high winds in the area. a big piece of glass actually blew off that building and landed on a rooftop and damaged some cars. but from what we understand and can see, there was no sense of panic or exodus. we're waiting to get more information about this. but apparently, that's not the kind of thing you want to see in an apartment buildings, especially one you just moved into. it's near metro and transportation. notices wept up saying folks had to be out by 1:00 today. but so far we don't see any sign of that. derrick ward, news 4. it's now 6:550. students at american university want police to catch the man who is suspected of hanging symbols of hate around the campus. take a look. this is surveillance video from tuesday night. you can see the man entering different buildings

grove. accident activity there is blocking the right lane. my traffic is not fantastic. but sheena, you have got great news in the weather department. >> oh, yes. i have fantastic news in the weather department. we have cooler temperatures coming. so if you've been waiting for the fall weather, it is going to arrive starting with today and especially tomorrow and the weekend. jacket weather into this weekend, at least a light jacket. we'll be seeing very cool mornings. also, we do have quite a dry stretch through about next week. so the rain is going to be a little to none in the ten-day forecast. right now 75 degrees in washington. still 79 in annapolis. it's not very cool out right now, but the breeze is starting to pick up. 73 dulles. 73 clinton. 77 in quantico. if you're exercising today, i would suggest doing it outside. it is going to be a little breezy at times. but you will feel the humidity dropping by lunchtime. 77 degrees. by the afternoon, only around 80 for a high. we're still watching tropical storm maria. it's offshore. going to keep moving away quickly.
