you. something that a lot of people will be saying today. as you were saying, tom, it really was initially the report that he wasn't that seriously wounded. that was not the case. >> the surgeons and his staff over the next week or so repeated several times he was quote in imminent risk of death. what we did not appreciate. you can cut -- you cut bones, internal organs and it was very serious. then he was readmitted to the icu several times for serious infections. so this was very much touch and go. we should remind the audience that the suspect in this, 66-year-old james hodgkinson was killed by capitol police. he died a short time later. crystal griner shot in the leg, zack b.a.r.t. shot in the leg. another shot in the chest and steve

the police officer not shot but injured with leg injuries. that was a very serious incident indeed. >> steve scalise, 51 years old. been a congressman since 2008. let me go to the north lawn of the white house. it will be interesting to hear whether the president was watching. it was a moment of emotion. we've reached out to the white house to see if the president stopped the meeting he was in right now meeting with some of his team to discuss the federal response to the terrible disaster that just took place in puerto rico right now. we haven't heard back, but the president and his wife went to the bedside to visit with steve scalise during the course of his

scalise's office says he will return to work and complete an extended period of outpatient rehabilitation over the coming months. right now the man convicted of abusing elementary schoolers in prince george's county is in court to face hundreds of state charges of sex abuse. >> deonte caraway has a hearing. earlier this year he pled guilty to 15 federal counts of sexual exploitation. he's also facing more than 200 local counts, including dozens of charges of child sex abuse. police say he had sex with and recorded children while he was an aide the judge sylvania woods elementary school. he was sentenced to 75 years in federal prison last month. fairfax county system one is hit by a train once every three hours. the county wants to protect those people, especially children getting hit by trains or killed. three months ago, this 13-year-old girl died after she was struck in

news 4's derrick ward is live at the vre station in burke, virginia. derrick? >> reporter: well, this is all about a public safety campaign. about trains and the danger of being in close proximity to them. as you say, it was three months ago to the day that that young woman was killed crossing a railroad bridge. the statistics are alarming. indeed, someone or something is hit by a train once every three hours in the united states and last year 980 people were either killed or injured by trains. so vre has teamed up with local public safety officials to start this public awareness campaign about the danger of being around trains. you know, we think of trains as big, loud. they are indeed awe-inspiring, but they're not like they used to be. they're not that easy to detect. technology has seen to that. let's hear from a vre official about that. >> continuous welding. not the clickety

hear from the early days and the trains are very fast and powerful. that's a lot of mass that's moving. they can't stop. >> reporter: so what you will see are ads in stations and some television ads on some local stations about the danger of that. they say they see a trend where people like to take selfies around trains. the rule of thumb, if you're within two feet of a moving train, you're in danger. the average freight train weighs about a million pounds. imagine that moving at 67 miles per hour. it can't stop on a dime. don't get close to a moving train. if you're within two feet of a moving train, you're in danger for your life. derrick ward, news 4. a lot of travelers had a stressful morning after the booking system for a number of airlines went down. >> many of those travelers have been sharing frustrations on social media. here's a look at a few of the tweets from passengers. the airlines had to manually print out the boarding passes.

faster. one week after hurricane maria and still no drinking water for nearly half of those who live in puerto rico. >> incredible to see this much time has passed and still there seems to be little movement there. the desperation is just -- continues to grow. >> i think at this point we hope they can get out on flights. there's so many at the airports, packed and denied. it's a huge mess. >> at home, though. >> maria is still out there. it's a tropical storm. off the coast and it's going to move out to sea quickly. it's on the way out to sea. not moving inland at all. it's because of a cold front that through the area. cooler temperatures in the forecast. finally, it will feel like fall around here. going into the weekend, we have light jacket weather. many of you will probably want a light jacket. into next week, we'll be in a dry stretch. the weekend looks pretty dry, too. look at the wind

claimed 28 young lives. >> law enforcement has put many of the criminals behind bars. the fairfax gang unit can take credit for some of the busts. julie carey recently became the first reporter to ride-along for one of their friday night operations in a story that you will only see on news 4. >> detective can tell you about home war. a neighborhood a hotbed for gang activity. he's been working with the gang unit for 12 years. on this particular friday night, his sahr yeergeant is riding alongside. they're doing a saturation patrol. the goal? gathering intel about gang members. we pull up to a consensual stop of three young men. >> they want to walk up and say hey, do you mind if i talk to you and that's it. they'll either start talking and go from there. a lot of times i ask to search. doing a consensual search. that's all it is. it's kind of a

when they can, they even take photos. >> we have officers that they take pictures, take two pictures, a head shot and full body shot. we want to know what they're wearing. we'd love to take them to informants. that's our gold mine for identifying these guys. >> mostly, they ask questions, lots of questions. later in the evening, they spot a guy might have been involved in a gang shooting. >> this is a guy who knows he's one of the ms players in the neighborhood. >> it seems he's taken a younger immigrant from honduras under his wing. gang detectives take time to get to know him, too. walking to him his apartment as they chat. >> you'll be amazed how much information you can get from a simple stop. he may call you in a couple weeks. anything they're willing to give us, we take. >> sometimes you hear chilling stories about gang violence teens have grown up with in their home countries. a teen girl was ordered to help lure a gang rival to his death. >> she described

us that the leader had her cut his head off and she's 16, 17 years old describing this murder to us that she committed in honduras. it was almost like she was telling us about her day at school. it was nothing to it. >> it's that kind of dee sensization that may help explain the shocking gang violence recently. the murder of alexander reyes, a prime example. gang members videotaped as she was stabbed with a knife, and sticks and her tattoo sliced off. younger killers. those are the big differences detective storm sees in this latest gang murder surge. >> the violence in the last three, four years, it's surprised even us. >> one more change. when someone is green lighted, it means they're marked for death. storm says there was a time when detectives didn't always take that seriously. because often it was only a threat. >> now when we hear about green lights, it's being followed up
