a west potomac higdownh schofte receiving a threat. but the school just tweeted out that it doesn't appear to be credible. >> police are on the scene of that school in the alexandria section of the county. all students are safe. that's what we can tell you at this point. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout this hour. and, of course, through the nbc washington app. and if you're heading over to nats park for tonight's game, you'll notice something missing. an atm machine. >> oh, boy. this video is from early this morning when police found the atm torn from a wall outside the stadium. news4's megan mcgrath is live at the park to explain how the thieves tried to steal it and who police are looking for. so whose bright idea was this, megan? >> reporter: i don't know. it remains to be seen. they are still on the loose. if you're headed to the game tonight, better have cash on hand because this atm, you can see it right here behind me, it's a mangled mess. you're not going to be able to use this. now, this is the atm that is just to the

field gate. and thieves tried to steal it early this morning. they used a stolen u-haul in this attempted heist. they weren't able to call it away here. here's the video from earlier this morning with everything still on the scene. it was about 5:30 this morning when an alarm went off here at nationals park. that's when people started to realize something was amiss. police say four men were involved and it looks like they backed into the atm using a u-haul. we have learned that that u-haul truck was stolen. it actually had quite a bit of damage to the bumper, so it looks like they were backing up into the atm damaging that bumper. and you can see that they actually were able to take the atm off the wall. it's down on its side, completely mangled, but they were not able to get it into the truck. something distracted them or frightened them. all four of the men according to police actually jumped into a pickup truck and fled

and investigators are still here on the scene. they are clearing things up but not quite there yet. they are piecing together what happened. lots of cameras in the area. that's one piece that they are going to be looking at, hoping that they have some video and still pictures of the people involved. back to you. >> we have seen this sort of thing happen before. as it relates to tonight's nats game, what will they do, have people go to another atm on the other side of the stadium? >> reporter: yeah. you can see by the damage to this atm, it's going to be out of commission for a while. this is not something they are going to be able to easily repair. it was ripped out of the wall. the machine itself is completely mangled. so definitely if you through the center field gate, this is the machine that is out of service here. it's to the left of the gate. just stop somewhere educational on your way. as for the road closure here, it is just the little section in front of the atm still closed for the time being. looks like they are trying to ve

over new evidence that may help ashanti billy and found braids and a piece of clothing. so look at this new photo. the fbi just sent us this, billie's driver license picture showed us what she looked like 11 days ago when she disappeared. her hair is in multiple twisted neighborhood where billie's car was discovered last weekend. her phone was discover in a dumpster, too. and her family is still hopeful she's alive. >> the thought is always there, but i have faith in my god that he's going to bring her home to me. >> we want to show you billie's face again. there's a $20,000 reward for information to help find her. we are following a developing story out of radford this morning where police are investigating several reported stabbings near radford

late last night on lawrence street just a few blocks away from the university student health center. we are told the suspect is described as a black male wearing blue shorts and black shirt with backwards-facing ball cap. no word how badly the victims were hurt, but if you know anyone on the campus, you're urged to stay in groups. ever get the sinking feeling when going out to find your car, we talked about this recently, and it's been towed or booted? >> i've never been booted, but i've been towed several times. it's a horrible, horrible feeling. but there's a new app coming out in the district that will send you either a text or an e-mail before that happens. before you're wandering around trying to figure out what happened. news4's amy cho is live with details on how this tow and boot alert system works. what about it, amy? >> reporter: hi, chris and

erika. if you park in a tow-away zone and you have the misfortune of being towed, your car could be any number of places. now, sometimes those towing companies will take your car to an impound lot. sometimes they just tow it down the street. but with this new alert system, finding out where your car went could be as easy as just checking your phone. it's the site no driver wants to see. but if your car has been registered ahead of time, you'll also be seeing something like this on your phone. it will tell you your car has been taken and where. sometimes it could be as close as a few blocks away. >> yeah, i would freak out if my car were towed. but i think i would be comforted to know that it's near wherever i left it. >> reporter: you won't get the notification until ten minutes after the towing has happened, so not enough time to run outside and prevent it from happening. many drivers agreeing there's a new system that could be a good thing. is this something you would ever use? >> well, hopefully i won't need to use it, but i think it's

two straight days of massive and dangerous rock falls at yosemite national parks have left two people dead and mountain climbers stunned. a huge chunk of granite came off el capitan on thursday, even bigger than the piece that fell off on wednesday. the second left one man injured. the first killed a british man and injured his wife. the wife of the man injured in yesterday's rock slide said they were traveling away from the park when it happened. >> yeah, she heard it coming and vividly recalls what happened next. >> we were trying to outrun it, it was like, go, let's go! at the same time, my husband reached up and was like, oh, my head, my head. >> rachel says the rock shattered their car's roof and injured her husband. she saw he was bleeding and paramedics were able to air lift m

accepts and values her. >> she has six months to build the flag pole and needs $25,000 to pay for it. when it comes to selecting a new name for jeb stuart high school, the superintendent of fairfax county schools says there's no easy answer. last night the board reviewed five options. the community decided a name change was needed because the school's namesake was a confederate military leader, even though variations of the name stuart earned the most support in a community vote. many spoke out against that. the school board will vote on the new name late next month. you've heard the warnings with kids back in school, stay alert as you drive, but despite the push, there's been another spike in cases involving distracted drivers. in the i-team, scott mcfarland started to dig into what is going on. >> reporte a

state police records obtained b information act show officers in maryland stopped at least 26,000 people for driving while distracted in the state already this year. that's up from 3,000 this time last year. and the rate is increasing over the past month even after school was back in session. a news4 i-team investigation last month showed a growing number of these incidents near school zones. 1400 drivers pulled over for driving distracted near schools in montgomery county alone last year. we also found the increasing problem on the highways including on the icc where we saw drivers over 70 miles an hour with phones in hand. were you doing what they say you were doing? having a phone in your hands? >> uhh -- yes. >> reporter: did you know it was against the law? >> i did. >> reporter: you did know? >> i'm very careful all the time. >> reporter: police are trying special enforcement to stop those

the u.s. also ordering more than half of its personnel at the havana embassy to leave the island. and right now a massive naval medical ship is getting ready to depart from norfolk to help with hurricane relief efforts in puerto rico. the usns comfort has 500 beds and several hundred support staff. it's the same ship that helped after the earthquake devastated haiti in 2010. meantime, the situation on the island remains desperate. millions in need of food, water and fuel with no way to get it to them. >> and to make matters worse, thousands of shipping containers packed with essentials are stuck in port because of the communications breakdown. here's nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> reporter: this morning at san juan's main port, critically needed supplies and shipping containers are getting there and

juan, poourts truerto rico. folks in northern virginia are doing their part to help people in puerto rico. a group of strangers took to social media to begin selecting supplies to send to the island. they call themselves united for puerto rico. and among them are a few loudoun county sheriff's deputies working on their own time to be able to help out. the puerto rico air national guard is taking those items to the island later today. and it looks like woodmore town center is up for sale. somewhat surprising when you consider it's the most successful shopping center in prince george's county. in fact, woodmore is one of the most profitable shopping centers in the country anchored by a nordstrom rack that just opened a few weeks ago. dave chappelle has earned all kinds of honors, but this afternoon mayor muriel bowser will award him a special award of gratitude and it

today. temperatures are running mostly in about the mid-60s right now across the area as we go through today and even as we go into tomorrow. we're looking at pretty nice conditions for today. 75 for a high temperature. morning low on saturday, 57 degrees. saturday afternoon and now early saturday morning in the overnight hours, we could have a couple isolated showers. but by saturday afternoon, breezy winds, 70 degrees. that will be the next shot of cool air. then on sunday, 71 for a high after morning lows around 50 degrees. many areas will be in the 40s. next week, though, the fall weather does continue. now, we have a lot of events going on this weekend. weather looks really good for it, too. we're talking about dryer conditions. maybe a few more clouds around as we go into your saturday. but all in all, it looks really good going throughout the weekend. next week, we do have another warm up coming. we'll be watching some potential 80s returning into the forecast. and maybe a chance ofn

[ cheers and applause ] well, we have beautiful weather. i'm right outside the studio with perfect weather for the weekend. we have a lot of stuff coming up. it will feel like fall. we have the d.c. walk for animals. we'll talk about it this morning. matt williams from the humane rescue alliance is here with me. and what is the d.c. walk for animals? why is it so important? >> it is an annual event we have done for many years and a great event for folks to come out to support us, you register and get a t-shirt and come out on saturday to yard's park and you register, then you get a chance to walk your animals for a mile walk around the area there. all the proceeds benefit the programs and services we provide to the animals in the district of columbia. >> reporter: and there's beer involved, right? >> there's beer involved later, yes, we'll get to that, but we are fortunate to have

magazine, for the wiener 500. >> reporter: shanna darlene is here. we are talking about the wiener 500. what is it? and what is it benefiting? this is after the race, right? >> the wiener 500 saturday 1:00 to 5:00 where the walk for animals ends is where ours starts. we have 96 wiener dogs racing head-to-head. all the registration fees are donated back to the humane rescue alliance. so it will be a super long furry-filled day. and there's going to be beer trucks, food vendors, animal vendors, a lot of great prizes. there's going to be a lot of costume contests. >> reporter: this is amazing and perfect weather to get out for this. we want to show you what the wiener 500 is, by the way. we have three dachshunds here with their owners dressed up in halloween costumes. look how adorable. this is really what goes on. okay, they are going to race now, pick your favorite. i'm going to pick dracula in the middle. he's just a baby.

the tenth annual washington design house opens its doors this weekend. it's a show of gigantic proportions. >> it is some 27,000 square feet. so it's a little smaller than our homes. it has multiple bedrooms, baths and kitchens. we are taken inside the estate fit for a princess. ♪ >> caller: like a palace from a fairy tale, the entrance with this cascading stairs could have seen a princess tripping and losing a shoe. inside the dazzling chandelier above would make jewels sparkle as guests drifted below. past the dining room, now set for a formal dinner. but before going into dine, the princes would peek into the drawing room to see if friends were there.
