the resignation of health and human services secretary tom price, he's out of there. almost as soon as president trump left washington late this afternoon, the white house disclosed that he had accepted price's resignation today. price has been under intense scrutiny in recent weeks for using private jets and military planes for his government travel. a series of reports from politico suggested that price's use of those chartered flights and military jets cost tax payers a million dollar. >> president trump said repeatedly this weekend he was not happy with price about this and the optics of the cabinet secretary's travel. blayne alexander capturing the angles. the optics, not the substance of what happened here? >> reporter: leon, you know it is a healthy combination of both. all in all president trump was not happy about this. this is now our third or fourth day reporting on this. if you kind of follow what the president has said all week long, it was rather clear
6:06 pm
fact earlier this afternoon president trump said clearly he's not happy. remember, this is a president who promised to drain the swamp, who is always saying that they can save millions of dollars, bring money back to america by negotiating better deals. so, again, the optics and yes the substance of his health and human services secretary spending $400,000 worth of taxpayer money on private flights, that is just not something president trump wanted in his administration. now, there is also another part to this. remember, as hhs secretary, tom price bore a large responsibility in getting health care reform passed. and after it failed not once, but twice in rather dramatic and somewhat embarrassing fashion for republicans, that's also another reason for president trump to not be happy with him. in fact, you guys may remember back in july he jokingly, maybe not jokingly, said that he was going to fire him if he couldn't get health care done. so, doreen and leon, one this n

exponentially a bad rule b a min flights. that was one. two, politically expendable for the president because he was hired to lead the charge on the new health care plan, repeal and replace. it was his bill, he wrote that bill for the house way back when and it failed to get through. so, it's not as if politically he had delivered for the president. and now if you see this from the president's point of view, what good is this guy to him? he's nothing but a political problem, he's a liability. but as you know, in these things as they say in washington sometimes, blood is in the water. and where there's one, i'm sure every cabinet secretary better be dotting every i and crossing every t. we already have the treasury secretary under an inspector general investigation involving the use of government planes to hop a ride to see the eclipse in kentucky. >> with his wife. >> right. >> how about puerto rico, let's get to that one. it is a really dire situation down there. but it seems like we are hearing from the administration that it's going
