bay casino where a gunman carried out the worst shooting in american history. i'm chris lawrence. the massacre left the country stunned but not necessarily surprised. we're, again, hearing the calls from congress to enact some kind of gun control legislation in and a community coming together to support one another. >> he thought he could destroy who and what we are. that will never happen. >> here's what we've learned since you went to sleep. the fbi is combing through the hotel room where stephen paddock caro carried out this act. he had 19 guns back at home. he passed all required background checks for guns. 59 people have been killed, 527 hurt and a lot of the wounded are in critical condition. we're going to have much more on

lunchtime temperatures, low 70s. coming home from work and school, in the mid-70s. warmer tomorrow. more about that coming up in a few more minutes. we also have breaking news right now. a road in our area that a lot of you use to get to work has been completely shut down right now. we have to be honest here, we don't know exactly when it's going to reopen. this is route 210 in maryland. the driver died in this collision. right now, police have route 210 shut down in both directions. if you're coming to the city, you're going to have to bail at livingston road. justin finch is heading out to that crash right now. as soon as it reopens, we'll let you know. want to get back to the coverage of the las vegas massacre. the entire country wants to know why this happened. that question will be hard to answer because the shooter, stephen paddock seemed to be a

vegas to play high stakes poker. gambling several times in recent weeks according to law enforcement. his brother offered few clues to a possible motive. >> it's like an asteroid fell out of the sky. there was nothing to say he would do this kind of thing. >> a tennessee man was killed helping his wife to safety when he was shot. a university student who coached his little brother's flag football team. survivors haunted by those they couldn't help. >> i would feel their pulse and grab their arm, there was nothing. we would cover them up with -- a lot were wearing cowboy hats and we would cover them up and keep going to the next one. >> people enjoying a night of music and dancing plunged into a nightmare without warning. >> reporter: nevada's governor declared a state of emergency in the county as well as a public health and medical disaster which allowed doctors and nurses from out of state to come help treat patients. in

news. we're learning more about the men and women shot in las vegas, including two women with ties to our area. tina yost graduated from anne arundel high school in 2008. she's in critical condition after sunday's shooting. there's also denise from martinsburg, west virginia. this is what she was posted on facebook sunday up until the shooting. her husband confirmed in a now deleted post that she did die in that massacre. they were high school sweethearts and were married for decades. she leaves behind two children and four grandchildren. the las vegas massacre is renewing a gun control debate. one group in our area is staying enough is enough. the group is called the coalition to stop gun violence and they held a vigil in alexandria to get

one of the greats passed away. tom petty known for free falling, learning to fly and american girl, died last night at the age of 66. over the weekend, he suffered a cardiac arrest in his home in malibu, california. but his death was confirmed late last night. petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band the heartbreakers and went on to sell more than 80 million records. this morning her parents are calling her a brave little girl. she managed to get away from a man who sexually assaulted her in prince george's county. it happened last thursday afternoon in ft. washington near indian head highway. she was walking home from her bus stop at the time and told police the man pulled her between two cars and inappropriately touched her. she was able to get away and run free. right now, police are looking for that suspect. a woman settled a civil rights lawsuit after d.c. police ce

tell. investigators are still combing through the suite where one man carried out the deadliest shooting in american history. stephen paddock broke the windows with a hammer and rained bullets down on people attending a country music festival. this morning, 59 people have been killed, 527 have been injured. the death toll could rise because a lot of the folks who are injured we're being told are in critical condition. turning now to breaking news here at home and new information about the woman charged for throwing a cup of urine on a metrobus driver. transportation reporter adam tuss is joining me now. what are you learning now about this woman? >> opal brown, who has an interesting history. not only went through this and was charged with this, she missed her first court date and after she was arrested, she was subsequently tested for drugs. she tested positive for pcp. not once,

two times. so the woman at the center of this controversy who, of course, we've been seeing this video for so long now, which has become a part of this push to protect metrobus drivers, now we learn that she not only missed her first court date but also tested positive for pcp at least twice. >> i think a lot of people -- it was the first question that jumped to mind. why is she carrying around urine with her? >> exactly. we were there when she was arrested at the plaza metro station. pat collins there with her as she was talking to the cameras here. she said she never intended to do this. we talked to her on the phone a day or two after it happened. she said she never wanted to do it but the metrobus operator was being rude to her. that's why she did it. we learned that she's probably facing more issues here and still being held in a d.c. jail right now. >> fascinating stuff. >> never ends. >> i know. thank you for staying t

a neighborhood where some families are start to go get a read on the damage and cleanup. >> reporter: here in san juan, there are no lights on except for the light from our camera and you can see people here are still trying to clean up. the floodwaters in in neighborhood didn't go down until yesterday. so there's still a lot of work to be done here. you can look around and see, complete darkness. these people have no idea when their power will be back on. one homeowner who moved everything from the first floor out on the street today told me that he had been through hurricanes before, but this one was different. this one took out the whole island. so this time, people across puerto rico aren't able to help each other. coming up later this evening on news 4 at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00, i hope to have live reports about what's happening with the navy hospital ship, the comfort, expected to arrive in port here in san juan about 9:00
