>> good morning everyone. i'm eun yang. i'm angie goff. >> aaron is joining us live from las vegas. i know you had a long day yesterday. give us the feeling of what's happening in las vegas, especially in the hours you've spent there. >> reporter: at 2:00 in the morning here in las vegas right now. we're set up outside the mandalay bejo tell, sort of inside the cordoned off area. no people in this area. you go a block down the strip, you will see a lot of people moving about in and out of casinos and restaurants in that area. for right now, there is a sense of quiet as police have blocked off this area around the mandalay bay hotel and the concert venue across the street from the hotel. still a lot of investigation happening here in las vegas after the shooting that happened here sunday night. we'll have much more about what we've learned in the overnight hours in a secretary. >> aaron, what about the las vegas strip and people coming

got about another hour of their work. traffic alternates by one direction at a time there. also in virginia, the express lanes out of springfield on the inner loop headed towards 66. this is a paving project. they're in the wrap-up stages. for now, the lanes remain blocked. >> jack, thank you. it's 5:03. route 210 between farmington and livingston roads is back open after a deadly accident earlier this morning. >> police say that a man was driving southbound when he hit a guardrail. he was pronounced dead at the scene. aaa says this is arguably one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the d.c. area. before today, half a dozen people, six people were killed in this same area. now, back to our coverage of the las vegas massacre. take a look. this is new video of the fbi's searching the room of stephen paddock. it is on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay resort along the las vegas strip. hundreds of feet abo t

festival where he opened fire. >> people had no idea, aaron, that this man was holed up in that hotel room with more than a dozen guns ready to kill. >> reporter: angie and eun, he had assembled an arsenal in the two rooms that he had, adjoining rooms in the mandalay bay hotel. 500 yards from the concert grounds here, he was able to square up and fire off so many rounds that hit hundreds of people there in the crowd. obviously, this was a scene that went from celebration, joy, a concert going on, to a scene of devastation and fear. now, here's what we've learned since you went to sleep last night. the fbi has been combing through that hotel room where 64-year-old stephen paddock carried out this horrible assault. you can hear the gunshots in the video there.

together about 23 guns this that room. he had 19 more in his home about 80 miles away from here. two nevada gun shops tell nbc news that he passed the required background checks. 59 people are dead, 527 people hurt here now. a lot of the people wounded are in critical condition and eun, we're hearing stories of people in their hospital beds at this point trying to find the first responders, the complete strangers who did everything they could to help them as they were in agony and pain at the concert grounds the other night. we're learning more stories about the men and women who were hurt here. >> that's right. we've learned that two of them, two women are from our area. tina yost graduated from anne arundel high school in 2008. her family tells nbc news she's in critical condition after sunday's shooting and also denise

this was what she was posting before she -- her husband deleted a post that she died. the two were high school sweethearts and married for decades. denise leaves behind two children and four grandchildren. this morning, the las vegas community and the entire country just want to know why this happened. >> reporter: eun, that may be the question that is going to be very hard to answer. by all accounts, he seemed like a regular guy. you heard from his brother yesterday who said that repeatedly when he tried to understand what his brother had done. paddock was a retired accountant, successful real estate developer and experienced gambler we understand. police say he chencked into mandalay bay last thursday. he brought all the ammunition. he kept it hidden from the housekeeping staff here we understand. we know that his father was once on the fbi's ten most wanted list years ago. but the

had a serious run-in with the law. we know he killed himself before police were able to storm into his room sunday night or early monday morning. so far, investigators say they haven't found any notes, no e-mails, no social media postings indicating how long he had been developing this plan. they don't believe he had any help. just a lot of unanswered questions. the las vegas police department, as well as the fbi, the atf, all working together to come up with answers about what happened here. we do know that president trump will travel to las vegas tomorrow to meet with some of the first responders here and quite possibly with some of the victims in hospitals around this city as will. for now, back to you. >> they really are the heroes here, first responders who ran into the sound of gunfire to help the victims. just incredible stories of heroism there. aaron, thank you. we'll check back in, in a minute. we'll have much more on las vegas coming up. many of you reached out looking for ways to help

>> look, i can understand yits confusing. on monday afternoon, i was seeing posts on my facebook page that tom petty was already dead. >> now, i'm free. ♪ free falling >> what happened was the lapd tweeted some inaccurate information which it later retracted and apologized for. not before networks and websites started reporting that petty had died. we did not. only said he had gone into cardiac arrest. petty's daughter criticized the reporting. john mayer tweeted, i've loved tom petty and i've covered his songs because i wanted to know what it knelt like to fly. >> sheryl crow said this is unbearable. vegas and now a great music hero passed. you brought us so much boy. he was known for american girl and free falling and so many

surging on itunes. back to you. >> not surprising there. chris, thank you. it's 5:10. after much criticism, the president and first lady are going to san juan today. they will get a briefing on hurricane relief efforts and president trump will visit people who are impacted by the storm. we've seen the devastation there. the island has been without power for weeks now and for many people the situation is so dire. >> 95% of the island in the dark. >> our doreen gentzler is out in one neighborhood in san juan where neighbors are starting to survey the damage and starting to clean up. >> reporter: here in san juan, there are no lights on except for the light from our camera. you can see people are still trying to clean up. the floodwaters in this neighborhood didn't go down until yesterday. so there's still a lot of work to be done here. you can look around and see complete

i'm aaron gilchrist live along the las vegas strip where there is still a police presence here tonight. you may be able to see the flashing lights beside me and behind me here right across from the mandalay bay hotel which is open for business today. there are still people staying in the hotel, walking in and out and around this area as police are still cordoning off part of the area between the hotel and the concert venue where the shooting happened last night. one of the things that's been so impressive quite frankly, here is the people's will to try to come together in spite of the tragedy that happened here sunday night. take a look at video from one of the vigils that happened here in las vegas area last night. dozens of people came together at this particular vigil. not too far from the shooting scene to hold candle, they held each other. they try to come grips with what happened here sunday night. some survivors of the shooting were at that vigil, too. they shared their stories about

event. we know there was one woman there who said that we didn't know where to go, she said. she kept running until we kornt hear the gunfire anymore. we know that the shooter reloaded weapons or got new weapons as he was carrying out that assault. we will likely see more vigils across las vegas today. quite possibly in the days to come. there were impromptu vigils in front of hotels. the fountains at the bellagio have flowers and trinkets out there. lots of places in the city are going to see vigils, people trying to pray for the folks injured and killed here sunday night. for now, back to the studio to you guys. >> thank you, aaron. a lot of people feeling that's all they can do at this moment. they feel they want to help and there's so much helplessness and hopefully hope that comes out of that city. thanks, aaron. we'll see you in 15 minutes. it's 5:17.

story out of prince george's county now. a little girl is home safe after police say a man sexually assaulted her. >> news 4's justin finch is live in port washington where this happened. justin, do police have any leads on who is behind this, who the suspect is? it's so disturbing. >> reporter: disturbing indeed, angie. but no, at this time police don't have any leads. that little girl walking home from school if her bus stop when police say she became a target right where we are right now. let's give you a sense of where we are. the devon hills apartment complex. last thursday she was walking home from her school bus stop when this man swooped in and pulled her between two cars and that is where he touched her inappropriately. the relief in this story is that she was able to get away and tell police her story. what police need right now is to get more information about

>> aaron gilchrist is live in las vegas this morning. aaron, a lot of people are asking, why would this man, stephen paddock, do something this horrific? >> reporter: that is definitely the enduring question here this morning. the question that investigators hope they can eventually answer by pulling apart stephen paddock's life. to get at everything he can find out about him over the last several days and several years of his life for that matter. we want to let you know that las vegas is typically a city that is one filled with fun and bright lights. you're looking at some live pictures this morning of the mandalay bay resort and casino. this morning, people are grieving along with the rest of the country. as you see the live images here. just over 24 hours ago a gunman carried out what is the worst mass shooting in american history in terms of the number of people who died. you take a look. these are the windows that stephen

night. the windows he shot out of, i should say. we understand he sort of banged the windows out with some sort of hammer. we can see them on the street. we can see them from my hotel room. i posted pictures of my vantage point. investigators say that he smashed them out. he had to do that since the hotel rooms in las vegas, the windows don't open at that particular hotel. he had to be able to take aim at the concert venue across the street. you can see it's two windows on either side of the hotel and the room where he was staying. the fbi, we know, spent hours digging through that room. he stockpiled 23 guns there. police say he checked into the mandalay bay hotel last thursday. he brought in all those guns and ammunition himself, along with his luggage. he kept it all hidden from the housekeeping staff here. another team of agents and investigators also went to paddock's home in mesquite, nevada. that's about 80 miles outside las vegas. you can see some of the video here.

guns inside his home there. so far investigators say they haven't found noits, no e-mails or social e-mail postings to say how long he had been developing this plan. paddock's brother says he's dumbfounded and can't figure out why his brother would do something like this. but that is the question everyone will be asking for the days and weeks to come, eun and angie. >> it's exci-- i imagine that mandalay bay was full of people. what happens to those staying in the hotehotel? >> so the hotel was put into a lockdown mode. this is an mgm hotel, as are sifrl of them along the strip. mgm, has allowed people back into the mandalay bejo tell. some people won't have access to their rooms. other hotels have made rooms for them available so they can sleep until investigators give the all clear after they've

need to. then they'll turn it back over to the management staff here and people will be able to get back to their things. >> still a lot of long days ahead for so many. of course, we know in a situation like this, one. worst situations, we have more of the stories coming up. aaron, thank you. it's 5:36. now to our top stories stories. legendary rocker tom petty died late last night. rumors of his death circulated after he suffered cardiac arrest early monday morning. his manager confirmed that he died just after midnight our time. petty was 66 years old. >> all lanes back open on route 210 between farmington and livingston road. this is in prince george's county. it was closed for more than four hours because of a fatal crash. police say that a man was headed southbound on route 210 when he hit a guardrail. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> the washington redskins will get a long break before their next game happening here at home. it will give them some time to recover after last night's tough loss to the kansas city chiefs.

originally to cover the o.j. simpson release yesterday, sunday into monday. shifted quickly to cover this story. help us understand what you saw unfolding as you moved to this area last night and what you've learned as you've gone forward into the last 24 hours. i know you've been up for a long time. >> reporter: yeah, aaron. chaos at the time of the attack. just thousands, tens of thousands of people scattering and trying to get away from what was happening here. the lobbies of many of the hotels, including the one we were staying in, turned into makeshift areas for people to hide. some of them became triage units where people were being treated for injuries. we saw people loading others into their cars or into the back of pickup trucks to rush them to hospitals. and this was a situation that continued for hours and hour after hour we

crowd just walking along the streets stunned and dazed. some looking for friends and family members that they had lost during the panic. others talking about the situation of trying to help those who were injured. talked to one young man without a shirt and he took that off to use as a triage for a wound. another couple with blood on their clothes after helping others. now, much more quiet, aaron and as we've been talking about, the investigation really beginning in earnest. >> reporter: jay gray for us here. jay and i spent some time together yesterday evening and we've seen the odd imagery that happened afterwards. jay, thank you for that. >> every time you hear about -- aaron and jay, thank you so much. every time we hear about the terrifying moments jay describes seeing the blood and everybody in panic,

disturbing crime against a metrobus driver. you might remember this video here. this is a story only on news 4. >> for that, we turn things over to transportation reporter adam tuss live in chinatown with a look at what we know about a woman through urine at a driver. a disturbing story, adam. >> reporter: absolutely, disturbing story. opal brown, that woman has tested positive for pcp. not once but at least two times. this happened along the x 2 bus route which runs all across the district. who can forget the images of this woman taking that cup of her own urine and throwing it on the metrobus operator. it's something that has sparked a lot of calls to further protect metrobus operators. but now we get a little bit of a clear picture about what is going on in ms. brown's past. first of all, she missed a court appearance for last week and after the first time that she was arrested, we actually have video of when e

awareness month and we're working to dispel myths about breast cancer. earlier we asked a doctor about a myth a lot of us heard. young people don't get breast cancer. we know that's not true. breast cancer can affect anyone at any age. but the risk does increase the older you get. now to our second myth here. if no one in my family has breast cancer, i don't need to worry about mammograms. let's see what the doctor has to say about that. >> the majority of patients that we see with breast cancer don't have a family history. while it's important to have a family history to report that and be more diligent, all women need to be worried about breast cancer. >> eye-opening. he said the majority do not have a family history. we're working with the "today" show to shine a light on breast cancer. we spoke with hoda kotb who is a survivor about myths she believed. >> for me, i thought if you were healthy and you don't have any history of breast cancer in your family and

would have a zero chance of getting it. why me? you come to find out that we don't know why when it comes to a lot of cancers. >> that's the thing. hoda was in great shape, very healthy. this was a surprise to her and for so many women. we're not alone and not done. we're going to tell you about young women and what they need to know about mammograms. you have to take control of your own health. >> i have a good friend in this area who was diagnosed in her 20s with breast cancer. it affects everybody. it can come out of nowhere as we know. we know that it's more than just getting the emotional support. when you're diagnosed with breast cancer, you're dealing with that part of it. there's so many other elements as far as getting treeatment an getting extra help and someone in those shoes. >> a lot of times, the treatments are very expensive. we're working for you with a great organization that's trying to raise awareness and raise funds to help women whoee
