paddock's mental state. they are going to ask whether danley had any knowledge, advanced knowledge of the massacre on sunday night. danny's sisters spoke to nbc news. they say paddocks bought her a ticket to the philippines two weeks before the massacre. they don't believe danley knew anything about the shooting and they think paddock got her out of the country so she didn't interfere with his plans. police say paddock also wired $100,000 to the philippines in the days before the shooting. but right now, it is still unclear what that money was for. and we're learning more about the meticulous planning. there are weapons scattered throughout the hotel suite at the mandalay bay. there were surveillance cameras, one in the peep hole of the hotel room to monitor the situation. bullets were raining down from

heavy law enforcement presence. with the strip back open, we're getting our first look at the crime scene. we can show you some of the video here. this is the stage where the country music festival was wrapping up sunday night. 20,000 people in the crowd there. everything was left on that stage and the grounds here. it's all still there. the scene is still being processed. we saw fbi evidence recovery teams and lab technicians at the scene for most of the day today and we saw teams across the street at the mandalay hotel, which is still open for business, as the investigation continues. people are mourning the lost lives here. early this morning, we saw people coming up in the dark to light candles and to leave flowers and messages. we spoke to a man who came there in tears. >> those people were citizens all over the world. there was pa

it was an alarming site today at stonewall statue. it was vandalized overnight. bureau chief julie carey was the first reporter there and she joins us live with damage that you'll see only on news4. julie? >> reporter: well, after hours of scrubbing and powerwashing, you can see there's barely a trace anymore of the white paint that coated this statue. you can see the clean-up work continues to get every shred of paint off this monument. they drove the power wash truck off to refi

dose in this afternoon. park workers discovered the vandalism around 6:30 this morning. they quickly threw a tarp over the damage so tourists didn't see it at its worst. white paint was thrown onto the base seeping into the lettering. that turned out to be the toughest part to clean up. the vandals used gold spraypaint to write the word "dead" over the paint. it's taken an entire crew hours to restore the statue. this is the latest act of vandalism in our area. visitors say if someone is trying to express their opposition, this is the wrong way and the wrong place to do it. >> we have a statue of tom jackson where he got the name stonewall, where can you have it? he was a part of american history. it sickens me that they come here and do

donald trump said that nbc should apologize to americans for the fake news. about a third of puerto rico thinks that the president is responding well to what is going on there. hurricane maria has done an estimated $90 billion in damage to the island, leaving 34 people now dead. 95% of the island still has no electricity, including some of the hospitals. a u.s. navy hospital ship got there yesterday. doreen gentzler is there inside the "uss comfort". >> reporter: i can tell you they have treated their first patients here on the "uss comfort" in puerto rico. a couple of them were

overnight and we see the impressive capabilities on this full service and staffed up very quickly and just about 48 hours with personnel, 800 people on the ship. 50 are doctors and on the "comfort." and they are capable of treating hundreds of patients all at once. we can tell you that the medical team on board are prepared to handle everything from dental problems problems to opthalmologist and every surgery except complicated heart surgeries and even are ready for labor and delivery on "comfort." i met a nicu team. they are hoping that they'll get a chance to deliver a baby on the ship. most of the people on the ship have just come together. today, i talked with a couple of doctors who usually work at

walter reed in bethesda. what's it like to do this instead? >> well, this is an opportunity to defend american citizens at home and abroad, which is what the department of defense has tasked us with. so this is a privilege to come down here and help the citizens of puerto rico who can just as easily be my neighbors in maryland. >> we actually have a fair amount of equipment for me to perform my trade as a ur roll gist but i envision being a first assistant to the generals. i think it will be post-trauma, wound care, complicated wounds and i'm very comfortable in assisting them but in terms of anything neurologic that local hospitals can't handle, we're prepared to do that on board here as well. >> reporter: that was the captain. he's ordinarily a urologist at

here's the winds and what we're looking at with the storm, it's making its way into the gulf just over the next couple of days, it's moving northwest at 7 and will become a tropical storm and then off the coast of mexico. 70-mile-per-hour winds and then into the open waters of the gulf of mexico. it could strengthen here. how strong is it? the official forecast has it at 80 miles per hour in the florida panhandle. watch where this coast. up the southeast and into our area monday night and into tuesday. some of the computer models are coming in strong and there will be significant impacts here. what does that mean for monday an

right now at 4:30, we're working on the latest in the investigation into the las vegas massacre. today the fbi is questioning the gunman's girlfriend, marilou danley. she arrived back in the u.s. last night. they are hoping that she can shed some light on why stephen paddock opened fire at a concert on sunday. danley's family believes that paddock bought her a ticket to the philippines a few weeks ago so she didn't get in the way of the plans to carry out that shooting. right now, we're keeping an eye on the airport in las vegas. the first lady and president trump are leaving any moment now. they spent the

responders and victims of the massacre. blayne alexander is at the white house to break it down for us. blayne? >> reporter: that exclusive report had to do with his secretary of state rex tillerson. tillerson over the summer was right on the verge of quitting, resigning from his position, because he was fed up with president trump but he was essentially talked off the ledge by the vice president. tillerson today held a rare news conference to push back on that report. he said that the president didn't ask him to issue a public statement. rather, tillerson wanted to speak himself and make it clear, he's happy with his job. secretary of state rex tillerson, who rarely speaks to the media, forcefully denying that he was so frustrated with president trump that he considered quitting. >> there's never been a consideration in my mind to leave. i serve at the appointment of the president and i am here for as long as the president

this area because this is the storm right here. it's a little bit of a serk lags. the 5:00 advisory will come out any second now. winds at 35 miles per hour. take a look. it moves into the gulf. this is the new track. it's the new track now that's just come out. it's becoming a hurricane at 85 miles an hour in the center portion of the gulf and making landfall on sunday afternoon in through portions of the florida panhandle and portions of alabama and as a category 1 hurricane and coming very close to our area by early next week. let's talk about how busy the tropical storm season has been. a lot of hurricanes this year. we go to amelia with more on that. >> doug, it's been an active year. we've had five major hurricanes so far this year. looking on twitter, we

new track that's come out. still a tropical depression 16 but we're very sure that it's going to be a tropical storm either later tonight or early tomorrow morning. take a look. this graph shows you the peak times. hurricanes start to peak around september and the second peak is mid-october. this is where we are working towards. there are weaker storms but they potentially impact us a little more with the track and how we start to see fronts return to the area. so where do tropical storms form in october and why are we talking about them not forming anymore? doug mentioned forming off the coast of africa. you might have heard of a cape verde hurricane. we've had two of those so far this season.
