in the las vegas massacre, how long ago the shooter started planning, and the other cities he considered for an attack. a live report minutes away. >> first at 4:00, three children stuck in a car with temperatures soaring past 150 degrees. >> today their mother, a woman from falls church is under arrest and she's facing three felony charges after her kids were found suffering from heat exhaustion. our northern virginia bureau reporter david culver is live in falls church along columbia pike. david will explain exactly why she may have done it and who jumped in to help. david? >> reporter: exactly, leon and pat. i'm going to walk you through this scene. first, though, the mother alexa faulkison, 26 years old, she works here at a law office on the second floor of this complex here and she was here tuesday around 2:30. she had to do some work. her job essentially court filings. she's in her car a lot. she parks along the parking lot here. inside the car, according to police, her three kids, ages 5, 6 and 7. she runs in,

bystander, the kids were left in the car at least 45 minutes. the guy who noticed it, he works in this complex. he noticed in the back of the car a window with punch through. this was a window that was wrapped with plastic. and he noticed that hole, a hole that seemed to show that the kids were trying to get some air. he called police. they say inside that temperature was 150 degrees. i want you now to listen to alexa's boss. she kind of gets some perspective from him. his name is sam hasse networks. >> she's a very good employee. i think it's very uncharacteristic of her. and but then again she's only been with us for about six weeks maybe. she just moved here. her lease just started -- her baby-sitting fell through and i think she probably thought she could keep the kids with her in the car as she went back and forth to court. >> reporter: she's clearly got a lot on her plate, but police also say this is a warning not only about children but animals. even though we're in some changing weather here, the

space can quickly rise especially when you have a sun as brights you can see it is here. as far as alexa, she's in jail. the kids are staying with family. they are expected to be okay. pat and leon? >> all right, david culver. for the nat that the kids are okay. fear and panic spread across social media earlier today after people saw this fire near logan circle. the smoke could be seen for miles. no one knew what it was and some people were even concerned that it might have been a terror attack. however, d.c. fire says it was a big blaze that started on the roof of an apartment building on q street northwest. one fire fighter had minor injuries. news 4's chris gordon talked to a mother who rushed out of the building with her 8 month old son and her dog. >> i just heard a couple of pops and i heard sirens so i ran out to see what was going on. and i saw the fire department going upstairs. so then i went back down, got my son and carried out my dog

apartments. it's still not clear how it started. >> we have another reason to watch the skies. new developments in the tropics. we told you this morning when tropical storm nate formed so now we're getting a better idea of where it is going and how it is going to affect us here. storm team 4 doug kammerer is in the room. what is the latest? >> nicaragua, coast rick, honduras, heavy rainfall, mudslides, rivers are flooding down to that area. right now that storm beginning to make its way to the open waters of the caribbean. take a look where this is. just off the coast, actually just on the coast on the border of nicaragua and honduras. you can see it making its way -- here it is right here. that's why we have it circled. you can see a lot going on in the tropics as normal this time of year. but here's the storm itself. and on this track the current advisory has it at 40 miles per hour, a minimal tropical storm. moving northwest at 9 miles an hour. back over the open waters of th

strengthening into a pretty strong tropical storm 65 miles an hour right off the coast of the cancun area or close to the coast. this interaction is going to have a huge impact on what the storm does the rest of its lifetime. i'm going to be talking much more about that, but it does bring it as a category 1 hurricane right up towards the new orleans area by around sunday. we'll talk more about this, where it goes as far as the gulf coast and where it goes for our area, yeah it is going to have impacts here, too, early next week. wa we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. >> we look forward to it. investigators say they are chasing hints and shadows as they try to piece together a motive for the vegas massacre. here's a look at today's big headlines. investigators are honing in on a set of hotel bookings stephen paddock made in the months before the shootings. the bookings were made about several sites, a site of similar music festivals, rather. there is also new focus on a new mystery woman seen with him just days before the massacre. and today the

and the confusion on sunday night, but they say the first fire engine arrived on the scene just five seconds after the shooting started. however, investigators admit stephen paddock led a private life. he had very few friends and a family that seems just as baffled as investigators are right now. that is making the investigation difficult. nbc's sara continues our coverage now from las vegas. sara? >> reporter: good afternoon, pat. havingers are delving deeper into what they call the gunman's secret life. years assembling an arsenal of weapons and explosives. in the weeks and months leading up to the massacre in las vegas -- >> everybody stay down. >> reporter: authorities confirm stephen paddock looked at other cities with high rises overlooking outdoor concert venues, including boston's fenway park. he went so far as to book rooms in las vegas the weekend of the life is beautiful music festival, and

checked in. >> was he doing presurveillance? we don't know yet. >> reporter: when he arrived at mandalay bay september 28th, he requested a room on a high floor. mounted cameras to look for law enforcement and blocked stair access. inside the room police found thousands of rounds of unspent ammunition and a significant amount of explosives in his car. >> we looked for actual indicators of affiliation of motive, of intent and so far we're not there. we don't have those sort of indicators. >> reporter: today more praise for the city's first responders, including the fire captain returning from another call when he heard gunshots. >> captain picked up the radio and said, dispatch, do you have any reports of gun fire and something going on now? i'm hearing a lot of gun fire. they said, no. oh, yes, now we do, it was that fast. the floodgates opened and outpoured dozens and dozens. >> keep your head down, go. >> reporter: jumping into action, bravery that

saved lives as bullets rained down. >> nbc sara dalaf reporting from vegas. debate of gun control in the wake of the disaster in las vegas, the nra now says it ask you ports legislation on bump stocks. they criticized other calls for gun control but did say the government should look closely at the regulation of those devices which help semiautomatic rifles fire more like battle field rife lz. senior legislators say they are open to looking into it. other gun rights advocates worry that any new gun laws do create what they call a slippery slope to more restrictive legislations in the future. some families in our area are worried about their future. today is the last day for daca recipients to file their renewal request to avoid the risk of deportation. as of this morning 36,000 of the 154,000 have yet

renew. after tomorrow they won't be able to. the renewal will allow them to stay here for two more years to work or go to school. the trump administration has vowed to roll back the obama era program. >> the message is chilling, an online statement threatening to kill african americans at howard university. today john rust faced a judge for the first time in alexandria. chris got out of court and spoke to students today who are still shaken up nearly two years after the message was first uncovered. chris. >> reporter: well, pat, within the past hour, the federal magistrate ruled that 24-year-old john rust of alexandria is a danger to our community, that he has a serious criminal history that causes concern and that he should be held in custody until his trial. now, today we went to howard university. rust faced the federal charges of posting death threats against

of 2015. prosecutors say the civil rights investigation revealed racially charged messages posted on social media sites were traced to rust's laptop and cell phone, sent from an alexandria restaurant. students at howard who remember the fear those threats created are pleased an arrest was made this week. some are concerned it has taken nearly two years. >> i'm relieved, but also worried about the time it took to track this person down, with other threats made against other targets at u.c., 24, 48 hours go by before someone is captured. that two years went by and they forgot about the case, it's interesting it took so long. yeah, i'm happy that the fbi was able to capture him. >> reporter: today here in federal court, the defense attorney

before you start the car and get on the road. >> reporter: absolutely. >> all right, thanks, adam tuss. and now a consumer alert. if you get an e-mail from apple, don't open it. it may be a scam. consumer reporter susan hogan is working for you and has what you need to know from our newsroom. so, what have you learned about this, susan? >> well, actually, believe it or not, i got one of these as well as a few of my colleagues. it is a fake e-mail that is targeting apple itunes accounts so the e-mail asks you to verify a recent transaction. and if you didn't purchase something, the message then tells you to click on a link to cancel it. well, that link is a phishing scam to get your personal information so we reached out to apple today and it gave us four signs to flag these types of scams. so, the e-mail is fake and the message looks significantly different from other messages you receive from the company. it also asks for personal information such as a credit card number or your account pass

and includes an attachment or includes a link for you to click that is a huge red flag and experts say don't do it. >> it is better not to click that link, to go to the official website of the company, and either contact customer service if you really have a question like this, or just stay away. it's one of those things where think before you click because if you click, you could be in a whole world of pain. >> and he is not kidding. you also want to look carefully for misspelled word. that is a sure sign the e-mail is a fake. you can learn more about how to avoid these scams. just go to our nbc washington app and search phishing scams. back to you. >> these scams are getting really clever. really tricky. it's almost like you have to treat every e-mail like that as if it is a scam. >> honestly, leon, you couldn't be more right. >> thank you. >> turning to the tropical storm, how muchen

to be a big rain maker? >> for some people, maybe not for us. we need it. >> we need the rain. >> we really need the rain. you were telling me you might not water the lawn any more, it's a lost cause. >> yeah. >> we need rain, we need it from mother nature. this time of year we do look to the tropics to give it to us. may not get all that much here, but we're still hopeful for sure. out there right now, let's show you what we're looking at down to the south in the caribbean. this is off the coast of central america, honduras, nicaragua. as we look toward the storm, the storm itself not very well organized. if i took off this circle here, you wouldn't even be able to tell where it was. i mean, it's right here, right here, right along the coast. it is making its way off the coast, though. it is expected to eventually move into the gulf of mexico where it will have the chance to strengthen. now, tropical storm nate winds 40 miles an hour, moving northwest at 9 miles an hour, it is moving toward the north and the caribbean, expected to strengthen into a strong tropical storm. winds at

we can deal with this. this is right around cancun, tomorrow afternoon 7:00 central time, 8:00 our time. as we move through, this is the key period between what it does around cancun, if it comes on shore, it may weaken it a little bit more. if it stays just offshore there, it may continue to strengthen. and if it strengthens it could be higher than these numbers. right now this is the national hurricane center saying category 1 hurricane on saturday, on sunday making land fall, very close to new orleans and a lot of computer models are a little to the left of this guidance here. meaning new orleans will have a much better chance of a pretty big impact from the storm. remember, right now it is a category 1 at 80 miles per hour. we can deal with that. they would see a lot of rain, maybe some storm surge, too, it is definitely something they'll have to watch. watch where it goes, sunday into monday, is it ohio, over our region? that is going to have a huge difference on who gets the rain and who doesn't. let's talk about the impacts for us. it

region monday now, not tuesday as we were thinking yesterday. monday, it is during the day on monday, sunday into monday. hopefully bringing us some rainfall. could bring us some wind as well, though i'm not nearly as concerned today as yesterday with stronger winds. maybe 20, 30 miles per hour. once again we can deal with that. today we've seen plenty sunshine, some cloudiness. temperature 79 degrees, winds out of the south at 12 miles an hour. it is warm again. 86 in leesburg, 86 in cull pepper. 82 degrees in manassas. we are tracking showers to the west. if you live toward win chester, martinsburg area, expect the showers to move in your direction, maybe eventually frederick. d.c. will stay dry and that is going to be the case the next few days as we have a front at boundary just to the north. but you do notice the cloud cover across the area. what about tomorrow? high temperatures tomorrow about where they were today, low to mid-'80s going for a high of 85, d.c. 86 on saturday. nationals games both days looking fine, absolutely beautiful for those

for another one on nate. >> that is going to come in 15 minutes. it may transfer a little to the west as far as the track goes. that will impact areas like new orleans. i don't think it impacts our weather all that much here, though, as far as the change goes. it is definitely going to have an impact here over the next couple days. here's where the storm is right now off the coast of central america. take a look at the latest track. this was the 11:00 update. winds at 40 miles per hour moving northwest at 9 as i just showed you 15 minutes ago, coming very close to the yucatan peninsula. this is key here. after friday night, after tomorrow night at 7:00, the next 24 hours is crucial to the impact of the storm over the next or into the united states because the more interaction it has with land, the better chance it has to decrease in intensity a little bit. the longer it stays out in the open water, the better chance it has at increasing. look at this. around the new orleans area i think it will shift farther to the west and put new orleans zrekt

spaghetti plots are called this for a reason. here are the computer models the national hurricane center looks at. they all go to the same place and that is what the cone of uncertainty normally takes and you will a of them have it very close to new orleans. watch what happens after this. all of them once again curve right back into you'our area. that's why we will have impacts here. how big the impact is going to be that is something we'll continue to monitor. i'll have more in 15 minutes. >> you got it, doug. two weeks after hurricane maria ravaged puerto rico, the island is still in crisis. houston is stepping up, gathering up supplies donate today help them after hurricane harvey. in puerto rico, doctors and nurses are still going nonstop. sleepless, working to save lives, and ease pain. but there is a lot getting in their way, including power outages, dwindling supplies, even crime. some hospitals have had to shut down because there wasn't enough diesel fuel needed to run their generators.

bothered to challenge him. what are your listeners saying? >> there is quite a reaction, pat, to this whole situation. people that i talk to, some say they didn't feel like he said anything wrong. others felt what he said was stupid. some say what he said was not necessarily sexist, but he should apologize about this. also, folks who are surprised at the scale of the backlash comparing sexist statements a year ago from then candidate donald trump, they say how is what newton said perceived as outlandish? also people feel like cam is under attack simply because he's a cocky pro athlete. i spoke with ramos, a sports journalist and host of the podcast rolling with ramos. she said she's disappointed in the former mvp but said there's no way cam could be wowed that reporter with that reporter's question with so many great women's sports journalists right now doing their thing. >> he was in awe of her knowledge. but at the same time, cam newton has made a career of saying the wrong

you can protect yourself and still be charitable. >> that's right. sound like you're working for us. >> i am. >> join us for news 4 at 5:00. those stories plus a good deal more. leon and pat, back to you. >> doug is, woulding for us. he just got the latest track of nate. doug, what does it look like now? >> just like we were talking about 20 minutes ago, i expect it to shift a little to the left, and that puts new orleans in the cross hairs of a hurricane coming up on sunday. let's take a look at it. here's the latest advisory coming up 40 mile per hour winds right now, it is inland, but it is about to move back over open waters. as it does so, moving north, northwest at 10 miles an hour, it will come very close to or possibly be on shore. the more inland this is, the more it can deteriorate. the longer it stays out to sea, the better chance it has of becoming a hurricane. a hurricane by saturday 80 miles an hour. in new orleans sunday morning most likely as a hurricane but transitioning quickly to

tropical depression. it won't be a super strong storm in new orleans. maybe give them 2 to 5 inches of rain. that is not a tremendous amount but it is an area extremely prone to flooding. i'm not too worried about the system as of right now. it is going to take a couple of days, though, to really figure this out and then, yes, right in our direction during the day on monday. today, nothing like that at all. we have some clouds, though, and we have some shower activity. 79 degrees at the airport. temperatures dropping through the 70s into the upper 60s by around 11:00. here's your temperatures right now. let's skip them. they're not showing up anyway. on the radar this is showing up. some rainfall, we need the rain. we've got some out fwards clark county, winchester area, martinsburg. i think this skirts to the north. if you look north of gaithersburg on 270 up towards frederick you have a better chance of seeing showers during the evening tonight n't what does that mean for you if you want to go outside and see this huge moon as it rises in the east? amelia draper more on that. >> i think for

metro area and to the south will have good viewing conditions tonight. again, if you do have clouds and you're on that maryland/p.a. border, might not be able to catch the full moon. it will look as spectacular as long as the clouds cooperate tomorrow. take a look, you've probably been hearing about this a lot, especially if you've been on social media. we have the full moon and this moon called the full harvest moon, the harvest moon is the full moon that's closest to the equinox. sun sets tonight around 6:44. you see on the screen. the moon rise 7:04. some nice timing there. every full moon does have a name. so, we typically i think hear a lot about the full harvest moon, a lot of songs written about and that sort of thing. hopefully we get pespectacular viewing conditions, take pictures and share them with us. a lot of high school football games and the
