now on news 4 midday, the race to the world series begins. we're live at nats park as the team gears up to take on the chicago cubs in round one of the playoffs. and it is going to feel like baseball weather tonight. take a look outside. we are dry. we have sunshine and we have warming temperatures. that forecast coming up. and this morning counselors and psychologists are on hand if kids need to talk at a local elementary school. this comes after the arrest of this man, roy simmons iii.

admitted having in10-year-old g. that girl was a student at carderock spring elementary in bethesda. simmons turned himself in to police yesterday. the investigation began five months ago after the girl came forward. she says it happened in november. simmons work as a part-time para educator and also worked for an after school program called kids adventures. las vegas massacre -- we now have a complete list of the 58 people who died in the worst shooting in u.s. history. the youngest just 20 years old. the oldest, 67. >> they were at the route 91 harvest festival to celebrate birthdays and wedding anniversaries and shared love of music. one of the victims of sunday's shooting had ties to the washington area. megan mcgrath has more on a touching tribute to her honor. megan? >> reporter: well, she was vacationing with her husband, tony,

and the high school sweethearts had been married more than 30 years. sadly denise died in his arms that sunday night. ♪ amazing grace ♪ how sweet the sound >> reporter: last night we saw denise burditis' hedgesville community come together. they gathered for a candlelight vigil where denise met and fell in love with her high school sweetheart and husband for over 30 years. her mother-in-law remembers her as a strong military wife who always put her family first. >> i loved her dearly and she spent so much time by herself, was deployed so much. she never complained. >> reporter: her friends from high school said she always kept in touch

had passed. turning now to the investigation five days after the shooting. investigators say they still don't know why stephen paddock went on his deadly rampage but they are looking into the possibility he had mental health issues. his girlfriend marilou danley said he would lie in bed moaning and screaming, oh, my god. but investigators don't believe his mental health had deteriorated so badly to make him carry out the attack. meanwhile, investigators are also looking into whether he had help planning sunday's shooting. back to you. >> megan, thank you so much. now to some disturbing news out of gaithersburg. police investigating a sex assault near a bus stop. >> it happened early this morning on watkins mill road. chris gordon is in gaithersburg with what we're learning about this case. chris? >> reporter: well, it happened here at this ride-on bus stop. a woman was standing and she was sexually assaulted. now we want to

surrounded by wo there's a deep trail coming up behind the bus stop. we had forensic evidence technicians here most of the morning. montgomery county police are working with gaithersburg police trying to figure out who did this. now the victim was transported per protocol to a hospital. chopper 4 showed the scene with detectives working the area of watkins mill road and travis lane. this is said to be a very quiet and safe neighborhood. the neighbors are shocked something like this would happen. i talked to a jogger who was here. he said he sees the same woman every morning about 6:00. he hopes it is not her. obviously no identification has been given by police. technicians are gathering evidence. the suspect remains loose. that's the latest.

to make guns fire like automati would like to be part of that conversation. >> reporter: so would republicans. >> that's clearly something we have to look at. >> we would pass that if you bring it to the floor. >> it's a very specific device with a very specific purpose people can agree very quickly it ought not to be allowed. >> reporter: a hint of compromise on an issue that's divided lawmakers for decades. even the nra, the national rifle association, came out with a statement suggesting that the government take another look at these bump stocks and consider additional regulations. from washington, i'm tracie potts. puerto rico's governor announced this morning that he is signing a new executive order making it easier for volunteer doctors to help residents in need. he's also asking the island's mayors to open every school that has water. communities can then use the schools as an oasis. meanwhile, the vice president will spend several hours in puerto rico this afternoon just days after the president's

visit. news 4's gentzler was in puerto rico working for you. this morning she's taking us inside a medical clinic desperately trying to keep patients alive. at least 6,000 people on the island need kidney dialysis to survive. for most of them it has to happen three times a week. >> if they don't receive dialysis then they will start accumulating toxic substances or fluid which can accumulate in the lungs and lead to respiratory failure and other complications. >> you can see all of doreen's stories on the nbc washington app. just search puerto rico. well, today the washington nationals will chase that one pursuit they've been working towards all the year, throughout the whole year, the world series, of course. >> yes, and they're opening the playoffs at nats park tonight. our own eun yang is there at the park. it's a beautiful day for baseball, a beautiful day to start this series. >> it really is.

park. the sun is shining. the field is gorgeous. and i tell you, i've been here all morning. just to see the grounds crew and everyone from the nats working so hard to make sure this ballpark is ready to go today is quite a spectacle to see. there were people out making sure the grass is mowed and all the lines are just so and people are out power washing the seats and the stadiums up here and it just looks so fantastic. we know they want things to be just right for the fans who can experience this great playoff game number one. now to improve the fan experience, the nats are giving every single person who walks through the gates today this red k-card. when strasburg takes the mound, the starting pitcher, they want everyone to hold this up. stands for strike. hopefully this will bring them a lot of good luck. to include more great features for the fan experience, if you download a specific app, the

we have you y. happen. and it's nice and sunny out there. she has on her shades, looking good. >> it almost seems like summertime and a great time for baseball. how is it going to be today? this is baseball weather, guys. you saw eun out there in the sleeveless dress and the sunglasses and it's just gorgeous. this is the kind of weather they're used to playing. the kind of weather they're used to, 72 degrees right now in the district. we have sunshine out there but some clouds around. not rain producing, though. we will stay dry. it's 75 dulles. 78 already in gaithersburg. and as we go through the afternoon we will be in the 80s. by the time the game starts and the nats take the field we will be in the 70s, about the mid to upper 70s. we're looking at temperatures in the mid-70s right around the middle. but by the end when you are leaving, temperature in the low 70s. so this is a very mild forecast, typical of what you w

well, good morning. we're talking about animal obesity today and you might recognize this guy. he really enjoys being scratched and all that stuff. his name was simba a while back. it got changed to vitto now. you might recognize him from social media. he was very large when he first was adopted. look at this cutie pie. first i have with me the owner of vitto and we have lisa from the humane rescue alliance certified cat behavior consultant. first of all, thank you for being here and bringing vitto here. how much was

>> and now? >> 30.9. he's getting down there. >> how much should he weigh? >> 7 to 10, i think. >> average cats are about 7 to 10 pounds. there are some larger breed cats and big boned cats, 15 pounds. >> got it. so now he was surrendered to you in this state, in this physical state, and what were some of the issues with him coming in so overweight? >> when he came to us they didn't have a carrier for him. he was in a produce box in the back seat of their car and we had to get a little cart and wheel him in on the cart and so then it came to housing him. we needed an enclosure large enough he could move around, feel comfortable, eat, use the bathroom and

wee h a we out. able to put him in so that >> okay. what are some of the exercises you've been doing to help this cat lose weight because it's important an animal stays fit. >> we don't have to make him exercise at all. he's a really active cat. >> some of the stuff that you did, looks like he's having a little trouble but at least he's moving and that was his exercise wheel, right? >> at the humane rescue, yeah. >> that's the box you said he came in. he was very overweight. talk real quick and this was at 35 pounds. talk real quick -- it's funny to see everybody's face holding him. talk real quick about animal obesity, pet obesity, and why it's not good for animals to be overweight. sometimes an animal shows you more love because it wants food. why can you not give in to that? >> animal health is as important as our own health. when cats and dogs become obese, you're talking

heart conditions, arthritis in his little paws, the wrists. >> so you're shortening their life span? >> definitely shortening their life span, making sure that the cats and dogs get adequate nutrition, appropriate nutrition is as important as anything and also just keeping them moving, one step, two steps, three steps. >> you need to keep your animal active. if you're going to keep your animal active it helps you stay active. we have a ways to go, right? but he's made good progress. >> almost five pounds is pretty good. >> all good advice here as far as keeping your animals healthy, keeping their weight down very important. we love vitto. we're always going to be following his progress. he's a pretty interesting character, too. and from the

if you're looking for something different to do this weekend, head into prince george's county to the black arts festival. it's taking place at the prince george's african museum. and joining us are the curator and one of the artists.

so tell us year. >> the basis of the festival is providing black women with the opportunity to speak for themselves because oftentimes in the media platforms, black women are presented as monolithic and it's not an accurate portrayal of black women so the idea is to give black women the opportunity to speak for themselves. we have one exhibit called this hair deserves a march and another exhibit called life blood from the stone and the idea is reclaiming our narrative so black women being able to speak about their own aesthetics and who they truly are. >> and you are actually using this exhibit as a platform to support and celebrate and promote local artists such as yourself. >> so my work focuses on black woman hd and the experiences of black women and how beauty is
