doug kammerer is heret. off the peninsula. it's not going to make landfall. this is critical for the strengthening of the storm. if it was able to stay east of the yucatan, it would be able to strengthen. if it came onshore, it would get weaker. >> it's continuing to strengthen. the hurricane center has this at a pretty strong category 1, maybe even category 2 hurricane as it makes its way towards new orleans. it is moving very quickly to the north. you can see the latest advisory which just came out, winds of 70 miles per hour. again, hurricane is 74 miles per hour. moving north-northwest at 22. it's really racing to the north-northwest. it continues to strengthen. there are some indications it may continue to strengthen to a category 2 storm with winds up

of new orleans, providing areas near mississippi and alabama with a lot of storm surge. it will be the storm surge that will be the issue here. storm surge and hurricane warnings are up for this area. then the storm moves our way. for us, most likely beneficial rainfall, as it passes close to our area on monday. we'll see you later. >> thanks, doug. a developing story, families chased from their homes by a fire. this is chopper 4 over the scene on pebble hill lane in north potomac. our assignment desk just hung up with montgomery county firefighters. they tell news4 that fire started about 9:00 in a second floor bedroom. the flames spread to the neighbors' homes. ems crews had to treat several people on scene for smoke inhalation. ow

throwing out their there. >> what a special moment for d.c. and congressman steve scalise. the house majority whip was shot earlier this year practicing for the annual congressional baseball game. scalise is back at work and back on the field tonight. the start was much better than the finish. the congressman threw a strike on his first pitch but that may have been one of just the few highlights for nats fans tonight. >> one of maybe three highlights of any of last night. that performance we saw tonight, nbc sports washington's chris miles has to look at the nats playoff loss. this is ugly, chris. >> yeah, but there was a bright spot. stephen strasburg had his second career post-season start tonight. he looked poised. it's a big stage. he faced defending world series champs. tonight was the nats' 2017 playoff debut. strasburg came out on fire. he had a

tonight. but before the game they teamed up together to help the victims of the massacre in las vegas with this psa. >> last sunday our hometown of las vegas suffered the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. >> we're asking for help. >> both these guys are from las vegas. they said they knew people at that concert who made it out alive. they're asking people to donate to help the victims and their families. it's been five days since that shooting. and now investigators are enlisting the public to help them uncover the motive of the gunman who killed 58 people. while they're confident there was not a second shooter, this he do believe someone out there may have suspected he was planning this. here's nbc's sarah doloff. >> i'm just grateful that i

news. tonight two soldiers are dead and six more hurt after a tragic accident at ft. jackson in south carolina. this involved a military vehicle and troop formation. the names of the soldiers killed will be released pending family notification. two of the six who were hurt are in critical condition. right now it is unclear what went wrong. ft. jackson is the army's largest training installation. new at 11:00, a substitute teacher is accused of preying on a student. the disturbing allegations come from montgomery blair high school in silver spring. montgomery county police say cory boatman had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old last month. the 27-year-old turned himself in today. boatman was also an assistant football coach at the school. >> very scary. i talk to my son a lot. he's 16.

can handle >> that's exactly what detectives urge parents to do, talk with your kids about this and call police if you believe your child is a victim. news4's i team told you in august that some jobs in maryland schools don't require licenses. many school employees go through background checks. but classroom aides, security guards, and coaches aren't required to be licensed. maryland does require teachers, administrators, and councilors to have a license. pamela butler's family hopes to finally give her a proper burial. she disappeared from d.c. eight years ago. today her former boyfriend agreed to lead investigators to her body in exchange for a shorter sentence. jose rodriguez-cruz will spend 12 years in prison. that's if he makes good on

whoa! you can hear that wind. it was strong enough yesterday at the airport in dusseldorf, germany, to push around a 550-ton airplane. >> wow. >> the pilots on board the emirates flight were fighting cross winds, something they're well-trained to do. eventually they were able to get the nose wheel on the ground and were eventually able to slow it down. >> wow. that is scary. >> i wouldn't want to be a passenger on that flight. new at 11:00, a man tried to bree breach security to get access to airports and planes. >> he was using a multiple list of different identities.

plane owner, even ay put out a the lookout or b.o.l.o. he's accused of using several aliases to target airports in our region and across the country. news4's jackie bensen with a closer look at his suspicious activity and his arrest. >> reporter: this man's behavior is very strange. he's a pilot. he's passenger. he's private plane owner. the tsa says that's just some of the lies this man told officials at airports around the u.s. including here in the d.c. area in his attempt to access planes in secure areas. this be on the lookout flier was posted at the college park airport last week. the tsa says he attempted to enter the property to board a charter flight on which he was not booked as a passenger. >> we're close to d.c. so we are always on top of it with our tsa countets

signature air private aviation terminal at reagan national on four separate days in july. he claimed he had a private plane there and even provided a tail number. police were contacted and he was arrested for trespassing. in may at midway airport in chicago, he showed up at a private aviation terminal and claimed to be a pilot. the tsa issued a statement that says, we're taking the necessary measures to assure this individual does not gain access to aircraft and facilities. he is not the subject of an active search, and authorities have not shared anything they may know about his motive. at reagan national airport, jackie bensen, news4. nbc 4 is committed to changing minds and shining a light on mental health challenges. tonight a local leader is honored for having a similar mission. tonight, the national alliance on mental illness gave john mccarthy its dr. wayne fenton award. the way johnee

socks. >> i'm not wearing his socks. all eyes are on nate, stip a tropical storm. winds now at 70 miles per hour. making its way into the gulf of mexico. you can see it starting to increase in intensity. the reds really starting to explode right there in the last frame here. watch the reds here, and then right here, boom. this storm is getting stronger. and it will be a hurricane most lightly by the 5:00 a.m. advisory. i would not be surprised if it continues to strengthen. that's what the hurricane center expects it to do as well. 70 miles per hour moving nor north-northwest at 22 miles per hour. it's expected to become not just a category 1 but a strong category 1. national hurricane center says there's a 50/50 chance that could become a category 2 hurricane with winds up to 100 miles per hour. we'll be watching this very closely over the next 24 hours, expected to make its way

p.m. and so right in this area, it may continue to strengthen. in this area is where we're really watching, just to the east of new orleans. new orleans under a hurricane warning. i'm not too worried about new orleans now. that's good news for them. it's going to be around this area, around the mobile bay area. this area very prone to storm surge flooding. they're under hurricane warnings, under storm surge warnings. storm surge could be five to eight feet. that could be another area that's very hard hit from this storm. for us, watch what happens next, after the storm moves up. right across our region here. again, just south and east of this. this is where the track goes north and west, this is where the strongest winds would be and where some of the heaviest rain would be. the rain we need. the wind we could do without. we are going to get some wind with this. areas with the heaviest rainfall
