good good morning. breaking overnight. danger on the horizon. nate strengthens into a hurricane as it races toward the gulf coast. it's already killed at least 25 people in central america. 18 million people from louisiana to louisiana are under some sort of watch or warning, with landfall about 12 hours away. a storm surge of up to eight feet is possible. we're tracking it live, and we're live on the scene. on his own. investigators tell nbc news they believe the las vegas gunman was the only one pulling the trigger that horrible night. >> he was the only shooter, i'm very confident of that. >> reporter: investigators chasing more than 1,000 leads,

studio 1 a in rockefeller plaza. >> welcome to "today." thanks for joining on this saturday morning. i'm craig melvin. kristen welker in for sheinelle jones. >> good to see you. >> there are lots of partying in cleveland. >> people holding their breath in new york. >> playoffs in full swing. top story, hurricane nate, set to hit the gulf coast. dave price is in for dylan. what are relookwe looking at he? >> it is different in intensity, speed and structure, but it is a category i storm right now, working its way through the central gulf. it is a screamer, as we say. this is a very fast-moving storm. a category i at this hour. 345 miles south of the mississippi delta. winds sustained at 80 miles per hour with higher gusts. as we mentioned, it is moving to the north/northwest at 22 miles

still intensifying with water temperatures 86 to 89 degrees. projected to wind up making landfall late tonight into early sunday morning with wind speeds up to 90 miles per hour. right around the area, surrou surrounding biloxi. then it picks up speed, breaks up but brings heavy rains at the beginning of the work week to the 95 corridor, from washington to philadelphia to new york. as far as impacts go, 18 million people may be affected by this storm, with heavy rains and flash flooding. hurricane form winds, of course. storm surge and rough surf. you can see, we have tropical storm watches approaching the atlanta area. that's what shows you the breadth of this storm. storm surge warnings from louisiana, mississippi, alabama coast line all the way to florida. we could see a storm surge of up to nine feet. we still have hours to go for potential intensification of this storm. we'll continue to

send it back to you. >> all right, dave, thank you. hard to believe we are tracking yet another hurricane. people who live along the gulf coast are anxiously getting ready for nate's arrival. nbc's kerry sanders is in orange beach, alabama, with more on that. what are people saying out there? >> reporter: they are paying close attention. there are voluntary evacuations in this area along the coast in alabama. in part, because people have recognized the power of nate before it became a hurricane. as we looked into central america, tropical storm nate hammering the area, dumping upwards of 15 inches in some cases. you can see here, the flash flood ing that resulted not only in widespread losses ofoutages . two children have died, who were near a fast-rising river and were swept away. meantime, here along the gulf coast, as i go to my west in the new orleans area, they've al

the fears are the low-lying areas of the city will indeed be inundated even if there is only eight inches of rain. that's why in some areas, the mayor already called for mandatory evacuations. people who need to get out of their homes by noon today. the biggest concern, of course, is the electricalorleans. if the system fails, the pumps may not be able to get the power they need. they've had problems with backup generators there. that's why even on some heavy rain days, they've had flooding. a lot of tension on the electrical system. all eyes today on what will be basically a day to prepare for hurricane nate. >> kerry, we know you'll continue to track it. thank you for that. now to the latest developments in the las vegas shooting investigation. this morning, investigators say they are confident there was just one shooter, but they're far from figuring out why he did it and if he had any help. nbc's s

vegas for us. good morning t ing to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you. half a dudsen dozen days later know the names of all 58 victims. we know their spirit, their story. yet up veinvestigators feeling frustrated because they're no closer to learning the motive responsible for their deaths. police putting up billboards, searching the area, anything leading them to a reason why. at the scene of the crime, investigators combing for clues but still no closer to answers following more than 1,000 leads. >> some of it has helped create a better profile into the madness of this suspect, we do not still have a clear motive or reason why. >> reporter: under sheriff tells miguel almaguer he beliefs stie stephen paddock acted alone. >> i'm confident of that. i'm also confident there were no people ihe

guns found in paddock's hotel room, investigators found 50 pounds of explosives in his car parked at the mandalay bay. known as a high roller, the shooter earned at least $5 million from gambling in 2015. paddock rained down gunfire for about ten minutes, killing 58 and injuring hundreds more. this morning, samantha ferandon, shot four times, is finally home. >> you'll never know how loud those gunshots were. and i can't watch the news. i can't hear those gunshots. because i just imagine being back there again and hearing the screams and the cries. ♪ amazing grace >> reporter: now, a community trying to heal. 35,000 strong gathering at a church in vegas. ♪ how sweet the sound >> reporter: at the shooting

coverage. nbc national correspondent peter alexander, and my colleague at the white house, has more on that, as well as the questions swirling around mysterious comments from the president. good morning. >> you look good on the big desk, by the way. this is a big deal and one being celebrated by religious liberties groups effective immediately. the trump administration rewriting the rules so more employers can refuse to pay for birth control, a move that could impact a large number of women by opening the door for groups to ask for an exemption from obamacare's contraception requirements. this morning, new fallout from a birth control controversy. many women could pay more for contraception. the trump administration unveiling new rules, allowing more employers to opt out of obamacare's key requirements. businesses no longer mandated to provide birth control coverage free of charge to employees if they have a valid religious or moral objection. several groups suing, including the state of massachusetts and the

going to do. >> reporter: unclear if he was previewing a new action in north korea or iran, where he is expected to announce he'll begin unraveling the iran nuclear deal. or was it after the report that the president was furious after learning rex tillerson called him a moron? white house aides say he has confident in tillerson. and the pentagon has announced that in addition to three green berets, a fourth u.s. soldier was killed in niger. he is not yet identified. those are the other three green berets that were killed. special forces parole was ambushed by islamic milmilitant. one more region where americans serve in harm's way every day. >> thank you for that. steve kornacki is a national political correspnt

news and msnbc. >> good morning. >> let's start with peter's story there. this contraceptive coverage. the administration announcing yesterday that it is going to allow more employers to opt out. beyond appealing to the base, what's this really about? what is the real world impact? >> i think it is interesting because you look at donald trump's actions as president. you separate them to two categories. there are the things that only donald trump would do. only donald trump would have done as president. then there are things that any republican who was elected president in 2016 would have done. i think this falls squarely into that category. if you look back at the candidates in 2016, this was an issue marco rubio talked about. john kasich talked about in ohio. jeb bush. this is something that mattered to the base, to the religious conservative base of the republican party. that is a group we know donald trump likes to try to reward, people who were good to him. those voters were good to him in the presidential election last year. i think you see donald trump rewarding a loyal

but one every major republican has been receptive to, as well. >> i want to talk about the cryptic comment the president made. i was at the white white house when he stood with his military advisers and say, this could be the calm before the storm. i said, what storm? he said, we'll see. we haven't gotten clarity. there are a number of potential storms. internally, he is feuding with secretary of state rex tillerson. externally with north korea. he is about to announce a new policy toward iran. which storm do you think he was talking about? >> i'll suggest option c, no storm, nothing. i strongly suspect this is something we've seen with donald trump a number of times in a number of contexts, and not just as president. in a situation like that, he seems to have this instinct to try to create some suspense, to cultivate a sense of mystery. a sense of drama and to be intentionally cryptic and vague in a way that makes people notice. almost a showman's instinct. when you employ it with north korea g

you talk about going on in the world, it creates a lot of tension, i think, but it strongly suspect what you're seeing is a president who really is trying to create a sense of drama without necessarily meaning anything by it. >> in the wake of the shooting in vegas, you've got the nra now and prominent republicans, even the white house, embracing the idea of the bump stocks, turning the automatic weapons into a machine gun. do you get the sense we are about to start a national conversation about gun control, or do you get the sense this is a one off? >> look, if you look at the scope of legislative possibilities when it comes to gun control, this is pretty much on the very -- the most limited end of what congress might do, if it indeed goes with this ban on bump stocks. i think what's interesting here, obviously, is the nra appears to be buying into this. i suspect what's behind that, they now have sort of their guy in the white house. when you think back to

terrible newtown shooting five years ago, there was a push for background checks. the nra was against that. barack obama was president then. i think donald trump has been close to the nra. they have a certain level of trust. they take this small step with donald trump as president, it won't go further than this. i don't think they had that sense with barack obama. you're getting a little buy-in from the nra, maybe with the calculation they can avoid anything further. >> appreciate your insights. thanks, steve. other headlines now we want to get to. two soldiers have been killed and six others wounded after being struck by a military vehicle while in formation at the fort jackson army base in south carolina. the injured soldiers were rushed to an off site hospital. officials say two are in critical vestigating the incident. mike pence surveyed the d damage left

maria and irma. he said the damage was overwhelming but he was moved by the resilience and assured them of the trump administration's sup spoport support. triumphant return to the baseball diamond for house majority whip steve a scalise. he threw out the first pitch before the nationals/cubs playoff game, delivering a strike over the plate. he was seriously wounded after being shot at a practice for the annual congressional baseball game. the catcher, one of the officers wounded, also. emotions were overflowing. we asked him, how does it feel to be back? he said, great. i want to get back to work. >> it was a heck of a toss, too. >> it was. that's for sure. speaking of baseball, this morning, the cleveland indians, one game away from moving on to the american league championship series. it was a dramatic comeback against the yankees last night, with the help of a grand slam.

we're in austaustin, texas, whe 75,000 people a day are expected for the austin city limits music festiv festival. what are they doing there? >> reporter: good morning. after what happened in las vegas, security isn't just getting beefed up here but their plans are also getting a second look. experts say this is just the latest challenge in trying to keep large crowds safe. over the course of two weekends, tens of thousands of people will stream through the gates of the austin city limits festival. enjoying music and food while encountering a strong police presence and undergoing added security screening in the wake of the mass shooting in las vegas. >> the tragedy is so awful, and i think it is on everybody's mind. >> reporter: including on the minds of those charged with protecting the large crowds here. brian manley is austin's police chief and says the shooting in vegas prompted them to re-evaluate security. >> we did sit down a

we'll continue to watch it. it is moving through with quite a pace to the north/northwest at 22 miles per hour. keep in mind, when harvey rolled through texas, it was meandering at 4 miles per hour. so that gives you some sense of comparison. the water temperature here between 86 and 89 degrees. that's why we're anticipating some strengthening before it makes landfall right around the area surrounding biloxi. as it moves through, it is going to pick up additional speed. winding up, bringing heavy rains to the 95 corridor between boston, new york, philadelphia and washington. as we head into tuesday. keep in mind, we are going to see storm surge, high winds and potential flooding. tropical storm force winds extend 125 mile s to the north f the center of the core of the storm. not a well-defined eye. and hurricane force winds, much ar

something on her mind. >> adorable. >> good saturday morning. welcome back to "today." i'm craig melvin alongside kristen welker, dave price. sheinelle and dylan enjoying a day off. hurricane nate gaining strength, becoming a cat 1 hurricane. what is the latest on this path? >> we've gotten the updates. this thing continues to gain strength. let's walk over here and take a look at it. it sits in the central gulf at this point and really taking in that warm water as it progresses towards the gulf states, making landfall tonight. probably late into tonight or early tomorrow morning. it is a category 1 storm. currently situated at 245 miles south of the mississippi delta. the difference now between just about an hour ago, now we have winds up five miles per hour. sustained at 85. movement still very, very quick. to the north/northwest at 2 2 miles per hour. where does it go? do

where does it wind up? let's answer those questions right now. as it rolls through this water, it is about 85 to 89 degrees. we anticipate that it may pick up a few more miles per hour. eventually make landiing landfa 94-mile-per-hour winds. as it progresses, it is going to pick up more speed, bringing heavy rains to this area and bringing that moisture to the 95 corridor between boston, new york, philadelphia and washington as we head into tuesday. what do we need to watch out for? well, we are currently keeping in mind that this could have a significant effect with flash flooding, heavy rain, hurricane force winds, tropical storm force winds, storm surge and rough surf, all the way through parts of the deep south. and as we head through the next several days, we are watching the potential threat for significant storm surge. that's a quick look at nate. we are going to continue to watch this as we take a

hurricane. up to 25 people who have died there in the mountainous regions. this water just coming with the storm, causing upwards of a dozen mudslides. in one case, two children who were too close to a fast-rising river were swept away to their death. there are thousands hopeless today. power is out. meanti meantime, coming back to the gulf ct, take a look to the west of where i am in new orleans, they're already sandbagging. the reason is the mayor in certain areas of the city has mandatory evacuations. people who have to be out out of their homes in those areas by noon today. they do know it is likely to flood. a lot of attention is being placed on the pumping system there and whether the electrical system will hold. the pumping system failed in recent days. when the pumping system goes down, even with the rainstorm, there can be floods. kristen? >> people clearly taking the warnings seriously. kerry, thank you for that ep
