definitely. that's coming later on tonight. a few sprinkles out there right now guys. that's from a different system. a frontal system. that's concentrating nate's moisture to the east coast. you know it's muggy out if you have been outside during the overnight hours. it's going to continue to be humid throughout much of the day. here's nate right now. winds are down to 70 miles per hour. it is trucking. it did make two land falls but the latest one was 12:30 around biluxi, mississippi. it's moving fast. 22 or 23 miles per hour. this long line of rain right here which is what we're seeing, that's from a frontal system so this front is going to push nate right into our ree swron. we're going to continue to see heavy rain right around this area for the next several days. we'll be timing it out and show you the track of nate.

force winds up to 70 miles per hour at this point so we are going to get breezy and wet and talk about the timing coming up in about 15 minutes. >> thank you very much. more on the break news, nate now a tropical storm after making a second land fall as a category one hurricane. >> and you can see the storm right here and we're starting to see images of the destruction nate is leaving behind. take a look at this. >> it piked up the cars in the parking deck. if you ever stayed at the goeldn nugget, this is what it looks like on the first floor. jay grey is along the gulf coast with the latest. >> nate made a second land all overnight along the mississippi

and now it covered the road and things like that so it's a treacherous drive. >> the effects of the storm felt by millions from louisiana through the florida panhandle. 85 to 90 miles per hour winds and driving rain pushing water and roadways and other place it's not supposed to be. the storm at one time the fastest ever in the gulf rushing through the area as quickly as it moved in. >> this is an unusual storm. moved fast and with a minimal amount of damage, we hope. >> that was not the case as nate ripped through central america earlier in the week as a tropical storm. the system blamed for at least 2 dozen death across the region. this year's atlantic hurricane season someone of the ten most active on record. 14 named storms and 9 hurricanes. five of those mayor hurricanes category 3 or higher. nate, a strong

through the end of november. jay grey, nbc news mobile. >> 6:05 and we're learning more about positive news for the family of a maryland native shot in the head during the las vegas massacre. the young woman was able to breathe a little bit on her own a bit. the family posted an update. they say that frost breathed on her own for about 30 minutes yesterday with help from a ventilator. doctors also say some of her or fwans are working again. she grew up and graduated from high school there in 2008. >> well, saturday night live taking a serious turn yesterday. jason aldean was on stage when the gunfire in las vegas overtook the crowd in front of him and last night he did make an appearance on snl. ♪

>> aldean paying tribute to those killed and hurt through the words of the late tom petty. he performed won't back down during the opening. he is struggling to understand what happened that night and how to pick up the pieces from here. he had this message for everybody touched by this tragedy. >> we hurt for you and we hurt with you. but you can be sure that we're going to walk through these tough times together every step of the way because when america is at its best, our bond and our spirit is unbreakable. >> 58 people were killed during the shooting and nearly 500 others were hurt. you heard him there singing the tom petty song. likely also to honor the music icon. >> petty died of cardiac arrest the day after the shooting. that was a

we already showed you the road closures. it's looking good. not bad running weather. muggy with rain showers but we won't have building heat. temperatures are in the 70s right now and as we continue through the morning we'll top out into the mid 70s so we'll fall were a degree or two and then start to

so temperatures by later this morning will be right around the mid 70s which is where we are right now. rain we're seeing right now, that's from a frontal system. widen out this picture. you can see this front coming all the way from new england all the way back down from memphis into the deep south. winds at 85 miles per hour. it's been downgraded to a tropical sorm. winds at 70 miles per hour but boy is it moving quickly and that frontal system is right along the appalachian mountains to we'll see rain by the time we get into monday and then tropical depression but the heaviest rain along i-81. rain for our area today and tomorrow. temperatures still approaching the 80 degree mark. if you're east of i-95. you could get a half an inchf

permits ease wrer ier to get an a higher profile in the virginia governor's race. thank you for being with us gentlemen. >> first off i have to ask for some of your reflections about the magnitude of what we have seen happen. the impact on the people of las vegas and people here in the washington area. >> i think about you though pat because we were watching your personal impact given you're from there. that's a hometown community. you were giving some insight as to what this is like for you. i'm curious to hear how folks are doing and where do you go from here. >> it's personal for me being born and reared in las vegas and having family still there. and i just discovered a young cousin of mine, a young cousin was at the concert with her friend and were able to

the festival grounds by being thrown over the wall by a man that passed by them. >> that they don't know. >> that they don't know. and they hid behind a dumpster. it's the kind of thing that we saw and heard so many stories t about. vegas is an interesting place where guns are popular there but people feel safe. there's cameras everywhere and people go there to have fun and let their hair down and live on the wild side for a few moments so this is really jarring not just for those of us that are from there and lived there but for the people that visit and also brings to

>> family is by her bedside and i think the one thing that really jumped out to me was some of the planning in this case and you know there's balconies on a lot of the hotels. normally you're trying to protect the people in the room. i don't think anyone ever even considered someone using that as a snipers perch. >> one of the things that stood out to me is that day i was following along everything coming out of las vegas. i was so intrigued by what was happening and the update with the investigation and that night i decided to meet some friends

that be the topic of conversation. people were exhausted of tragedy. they didn't want to talk about it. it's not that they didn't think it was important but they were tired of carrying so much tragedy with them. we were talking about congressman steve scalise returning to the floor after he was shot and this point of exhaustion has been reached. >> it's raised the issue of gun control again and i'm wondering could this become a defining issue in a race that was so close. >> of course now it's coming up. the bureau chief brought that up to both of the candidates. initially saying he didn't want to go there yet. he says there will be ample time he wants to focus on the victims and getting through a very

difficult period. he says you have to look at gun control in a different way. especially when it comes to assault rifles. >> consider universal background checks of reinstating the law that restricts gun purchases. a law that expired several years ago. >> it's interesting. talking about the rivirginia governor race. that was the day after so this is the second time the issue of guns has been thrust into the race and there's an antigun group backed by michael bloomberg that planned t

three quarters of a million dollars. you have these two sides and they're both well funded and they're pouring a lot of money into this issue. >> talking to a state senator to your point given how personal and how local and it's going to certainly come up again and may have more potential. >> what about the office, an appeals court ruled that restriction is unconstitutional. it would make it easier for you or for anyone to get a concealed carry permit. >> it was. he would be because if you let it stand that you'll have more concealed guns on the streets of d.c. which is what the d.c. government long said they don't want but you push this to the supreme cou

they could say the 2nd amendment applies not just in someone's home but everywhere and then d.c., the gun laws could be changed completely. so you have to balance, if you're the attorney general in d.c., do you lose a little bit or do you fight for that little bit and risk losing everything that you want in this law. >> what a decision to have to make at a time when we're considering or seeing lawmakers consider banning them and not restricting silencers or restricting the sales of silencers. we'll be right back.

>> the president visited last week. the efforts are so great but the need is still so great. still getting supplies there is still a problem. >> that's the biggest struggle. you and i were reporting last week, two weeks ago really talking about all the things and you asked me how do they actually -- >> that huge warehouse. >> there's so much generosity here and you see that yet there's so much frustration and how does it actually get to the people down there because they know they're able to at least perhaps get it on a ship or plane but once it lands there's so much discussion of logistics. they're starting to mention meals. talk about putting words into action. thousands upon thousands of

shipped out to those that really need it. >> president trump made some what of a good point and it got lost with the throwing paper towels at people and saying you really wrecked our budget. that derailed what he was saying but he did make the argument that it's an island. it's a little tougher. it's not the same as getting aid into texas or florida. >> the coast. >> i saw this after the earthquake in haiti. people were wondering why isn't the aid coming in. as we started to investigate we could see where the ports had been wrecked by the earthquake so the ships were having a hard time getting in to off load. some of the roads were damaged or had debris on them so you couldn't truck the supplies from the port to where they were needed. the airport could only handle so many planes. er

challenges to getting the aid there and i think his message was muddied by the other comments. >> communication issues. how much we rely on cell towers and folks had not been able to reach their family for two weeks and some still waiting. it's incredible. >> another topic. millions of dollars for scholarships at the university of maryland t. school is getting a gift from the clark family foundation. they called this the most important day in the university's history. what's the story behind this gift? >> james clark graduated from maryland in 1950 with an engineering degree. didn't have a lot of money. he hitchhiked from home because he couldn't aff

board. he took that degree and went on to build one of the biggest construction forms in the country. he's the guy that basically built camden yards. commercial real estate. he built this huge company. the family wants to call it an investment and not a gift. what their goal is they want to double the number of students getting financial aid and that's what this money is for. >> that's huge. >> especially when you look at higher education. you could have a building named after you and those buildings help to serve education in a different way but to put it into the students and watch people inresting into their future and contribute back it's huge. >> and you both know college has become unaffordable. >> we were just talking about how much we paid versus what kids pay now or

10, 15 years. >> the challenge of getting into college now. the resumes they have to have. >> october is hispanic heritage month and we're planning a special program to honor the work, and contributions of our local family. you're working on a number of to stories. tell us about the pieces you're going to do. >> we have the nats playoff run and erica sits down with a couple of latino players. she will give us a preview of what it's like to mesh in the environment and live life here and hoping the nats do well. also a flavor of cuban ri thith so normally that's my realm but we spread the cuban rhythm and then i went downo

school. they are 60% hispanic in that community and so this high school found a way to integrate and embrace hispanic culture while at the same time providing the english requirements and necessities. but it's interesting to watch. we'll have that on october 14th for sure. >> what are you working on? >> some stuff for halloween, actually. a couple of stories. especially when it comes to allergens. my son had a horrible reaction to eating peanut buttercups. >> i love them. >> he ended up in the hospital. just one of the worst nights of our lives. you educate parents about safety

it's a gorgeous morning out there. a little bit of fog and mist out there. i have to tell you it's going to be a little on the muggy side and also some mist out there but one thing the humidity. it's going to be muggy throughout the day. that thick humidity out there. temperatures are going to fall a touch here and there through the 7:00 a.m. hour. maybe 73 but we'll stay in the 70s today. neither here nor there. you have rain along i-81. this is from a frontal system and not from nate. nate still down here in mississippi. we'll continue to see rain out of that and then we tap into nate. we'll talk about timing for rain tomorrow and the rest of the week. >> thank you. 6:33. today a funeral will be held for a local college student we told you about earlier this week. he was found

campus dorm last weekend. like so many other teens he loved to play football. tristan used to play in fredericksburg. he was just 19 years old. police say he died after taking a drug. >> we are learning more about a deadly plane crash. virginia state police say steven was killed while flying near front royal yesterday. the small plane went down in a wooded area shortly after take off. here's a look at chopper 4 flew over the scene. you can see the plane just destroyed here. police say he was towing a glider and problems started after the glierd safely disconnected. he was 76 years

they also saw two people run from the van after it hit the woman. the driver did stay on the scene. they're still trying to find out why the van hit the woman. >> people rush into burning buildings or burst on the scene of a medical emergency and this weekend the courage and sacrifice of our nation's firefighters is being recognized. prince george's county firefighter is one of the 75 firefighters being honored at the national fallen firefighters memorial. the candlelight service was held last night. he died in the line of duty last year. he was shot and killed while trying to help a man. firefighters come from across the country to honor the fallen. >> stand with me shoulder to shoulder to remember our honored firefighters and to pay tribute to the unimaginable sacrifice that you and your family endured. >> well, today,

news 4 at 4:00. >> we'll both be there. >> that's right. it's been almost four months since a gunman opened fire. >> several people were shot. now we're getting a look at the planning that gunman did in the months leading up to that attack. >> the gunman came to washington in march from his home in illinois and began planning his attack as early as april. according to the report from common wealth's attorney for the city of alexandria he had video of the alexandria baseball field on his cell phone shot in april. months before the attack. and he had been seen several times around the ball field in the months and days leading up to the shooting. the suspect fired at least 70 shots and police fired at least 40

congressman steve scalise was shot first. then the third victim was shot as he lay on the ground trying to hide from the bullets. he was eventually shot three times by police. the use of deadly force was justified. all of these injured are said to be recovering well. scalise remained in the hospital for six weeks after the shooting and only returned to the house floor last week. >> we'll hear more from steve scalise this morning on meet the press. >> semiautomatic rifles makes them look like fully automatic

weapons and function like that. a lot of gun control this week. republicans want to look into the issue. do you feel like, i mean, it's hard to say which mass shooting is going to push us to the next level but -- >> if you're thinking that there's bipartisan support means you'll start having a larger conversation about new gun regulations, no. that's not going to happen. people are looking at this as almost a loophole. turn semiautomatic and that seems to be even where the nra is coming down on this. the debate itself isn't going to change until the politics of it change and right now, until you have somebody that loses an election because they didn't vote for new gun regulations. until you have elected officials losing for reasons like that,

now the only elected officials that lose on the issue of guns, they usually lose because they voted for too much gun regulation. >> speaking of elected officials, house majority steve scalise. any indication of his perspective on this? >> yeah we have a lengthy conversation. he has a maximalist view of the 2nd amendment. he says the founders were so concerned and convinced it was a right that they only included it when some people might think it wasn't guaranteed and he has a maximalist view

puerto rican women raised $15,000 for the island. the organization has a fund-raising goal of $250,000. and here is one way that you can help puerto rico. a northern virginia based company arc relocation plans to send a shipping container with supplies to puerto rico next week. you can see some of the supplies they already collected there. diapers, water, cleaning supplies. you can drop off supplies through tomorrow at the fairfax office. they're also collecting monetary donations and shipping that off on tu

that. we have rain chances all of this work week and after that, fall weather returns. temperatures right now in the 70s. we are staying in the 70s through much of the day. if you're heading out to the festival, it's going to be cloudy, muggy and damp. as we get into the afternoon there could be some drying out there but still you're out in the woods. it's going to be a little muggy so plan for that. here's our rain outlook. sunday and monday i do believe we'll continue to see widespread showers. this afternoon as i said, maybe a little bit more spotty and then we get into tuesday some spotty rain showers for everybody. wednesday will bump up the chance just a little bit and thursday will lower it. heavy rain happening. this rain stretches all the way through new england. that to the south and then here's nate. so really this frontal system is

we're really looking at the rain lining up parallel to i-95 all the way up to philly. so again we are going to continue to see some rain. heavy at times. especially if you're west. but again just some moderate steady rain and we need that rain definitely. this is not from nate though. this is from a frontal system that goes all the way from new england back down to the deep south and then here's nate right here. made it to land fall as a category 1 hurricane. and it continues to roll pretty quickly moving at about 22 or 23 miles per hour even over land. so the rain we're seeing now out of that front. that front is going to squeeze that moisture from nate all the way up the east coast. so we're going to continue to see rain but the rain this morning from that frontal system and we'll be dealing with it through much of the morning. could get a break later on this afternoon throughout the evening as we tap in later on tonight through the overnight. winds at
