president did on sunday committed a publicity stunt. vice president mike pence walked out of yesterday's indianapolis colts game when some players took a knee during the national anthem. >> it wasn't long after the anthem that the vice president left the game. a senior official for mr. pence says that the decision to walk out was planned ahead of time. the vice president defended his decision tweeting that he left because he and president trump will not dignify any event at that disrespects our soldiers, our flag or national anthem. he went on to say, he didn't think it was too much to ask nfl players to respect the flag and our national anthem. president trump weighed in saying he asked pence to leave if any players kneeled. one player is calling mr. pence's move a pr stunt. >> with the information that i have, last time he's been to a colts game is three y

me. he knew our team has had the most players protests. he knew that we were probably going to do it again. >> the official for the vice president says pence was hopeful all of the players would stand during the anthem. perns served as the governor of indiana before becoming vice president. president trump is in the middle of a new war of words with a member of his own party. this started yesterday when the president went after senator bob corker on twitter. corker responded and has new explosive comments about the president overnight. tracie potts will have a look at what he said coming up. it's the news that's rocking hollywood this morning. big-time movie producer harvey weinstein has been fired by his own company. the cover of the new york daily news says it all. harv heaved. weinstein was terminated last night by the weinstein company, which he co-founded with his brother. several women, including movie star ashley judd,

weinstein of sexual misconduct and harassment in a recent new york times article. in a statement to the times, weinstein apologized for his behavior. 4:33 now. you are taking a look at d.c. firefighters trying to soak the flames from a car. what you can't see is how they cut off the roof of that car to pull two people out. those people are now in critical condition. d.c. police say the car was speeding downhill crest drive southeast last night. the driver lost control and slammed into trees off the road. that is when the car burst into flames. the man who lived nearby heard what sounded like an explosion. >> i was in the kitchen and i heard this huge, like, bomb bang sound and came outside. there was like three more pops like that. and there were -- the woods were on fire. >> a third person had minor injuries. d.c. police are investigating whether the car

because it was missing license plates. right now, a 73-year-old mother and her 50-year-old daughter are missing. arlene grant and her mother marie grant were last seen saturday at a family party. montgomery county police say arlene has contacted family members via text since that time but not provided information about her and her mother's whereabouts. police are worried about their emotional and physical welfare. if you see either woman, please call police. tracking nate right now. those were the sights and sounds of nate as it tore through the gulf coast this weekend. take a look at all that water. flooding what looks like a parking garage. as you can see, flooding and storm surge were the big problems. this morning people along the gulf coast are cleaning up all of that damaget

and water, most residents who lived through katrina said things could have been a lot worse. >> people who lived through katrina have seen the worst of the worst. i think they were prepared for that and feel fortunate they weren't hit harder. >> the cat 1 did a lot of damage. i mean, just amazing. people don't really pay attention to the numbers when you get small like that. the 1 and 2. >> sheena has always said, those numbers can only mean a difference of 5 miles per hour. >> yeah. >> you can't take those lightly. >> you really can't take it lightly. it depends what category we're talking about as far as the difference in wind speed. we're talking about storm surge and heavy rain. it's not always a category number. >> the thing about this storm, it barreled into the area. 22, 23 miles an hour. it could have been moving slower, but thank goodness it was moving quickly. >> it's made its way inland

this is tropical depression nate now. there you see it all the rain to the east of the center now. this is the rain we're expecting for the morning commute. this is why we have a weather alert today. because of the timing of this rain. kind of an inconvenience this morning. so you see heavier rain trying to get closer to winchester across 81. closer to la ray. light rain towards quantico and fredericksburg. we'll see heavier rain for the morning drive. as far as the impacts are concerned, let's head over to lauryn. good morning, sheena. minor impacts here. we'll have steady rain throughout. also, we'll get breezy. starting to get breezy now. we'll see winds possibly up to 30, 35 miles per hour. especially if you're higher elevations. some of the ridge tops out there. high winds, we're not going to have any tornadoes or any hail. in probably not any isolated thunderstorms. although maybe we'll put one in. heavy rainfall possible but not probable.

if you're headed out west along i-81. that could be the maximum amount we see around here. again, still weather alert. we've got showers throughout the morning and again, it is going to be pretty muggy out there. jack taylor, good morning. how do the roads look on this columbus day? >> well, they seem a little drier than they will later. great. woodbridge, 123 southbound, that ramp to get on to southbound i-95, that crash is just cleared. tow trucks have left. so the ramp has reopened in woodbridge. still our closure in southeast along minnesota avenue, randle circle. this accident activity brought a pole and wires down. that may be closed for the foreseeable. activity in la plata blocking hawthorne road near miller road. ongoing investigation there. molette, eun, back to you. >> thank you, jack. who better to get advice about keeping crooks away than a former crook. the stern warning this morning from an infamous former scam artist.

it's the video making rounds on social media. you can see why here. this angry man is clinging to the hood of a school bus as it drives down the road in baltimore county. you can hear some of the students on the bus in the background. they seem a little concerned about what's going on here. >> absolutely. we know the story behind this crazy video. the man on the hood is laverne durand. he was upset because someone on the bus threw a bottle out the window and it hit his car. police say durand wanted the bus driver to open the door so he could confront the person who threw the bottle. the bus driver was scared for the students' safety and instead, drove to the police station. the man is now facing several charges this morning because of that. >> the bus was headed to a middle school. none of the students was hurt. but i can imagine the poor bus er

children. but there's a man on the front of the hood driving slowly enough so he doesn't hurt that person. >> there was a lot of maneuvering there. thank goodness there was video to capture that so police could assess the situation. the school year could be changing for a big school district here in our area. the prince william county school board could decide to start classes before labor day. the superintendent and a calendar committee are recommending that as a best option. if approved, it would mean school would start august 27th and end june 11th. if you're getting ready to head out the door, don't forget that umbrella. >> we've got some nice conditions out there. you can see that bottom one says muggy. i tried to cover it up with spotty showers. either way, it's going to be humid and warm. we continue to see showers throughout the morning. they will start to taper off this afternoon. sheena has that timing coming up. war of words. the new remarks from a retiring congressman who

he feels like his office is being treated like a reality show by president trump. that twitter war could have real implications, too, here on capitol hill. started with the president saying that bob corker didn't have the guts to run again, that he begged for his endorsement and said he couldn't win. tennessee without the president's endorsement. the white house is running like an adult daycare center. that's what he said on twitter. the new comments to "the new york times" as well, senator corker warning that the threats from president trump could set the nation on the path to world war three. while that's escalating on social media, it could have real implications here. bob corker is the head of the foreign relations committee. the president wants to get rid of the iran deal. that would have to run through corker's committee, not to mention he's got a critical vote on tax reform. tracie, let's turn to vice

of the indianapolis colts game. the colts playing the 49ers known to kneel during the anthem. this is being called a pr stunt and some are questioning how much taxpayer money was spent on the trip going back and forth. any white house response to this? >> the response is from the president on twitter saying that he did ask vice president pence to walk out of the game if anyone neild in the anthem. the how much did that trip cost? according to market watch, that claim that he took a government plane is about $42,000 an hour. to be at the game for a few minutes and leave, they estimate could have cost taxpayers about $200,000. >> that's a lot of money. tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. tracie, thank you. the city of charlottesville is trying to prevent more rallies by hate groups. >> that was

officials say a group of 40 white nationalists gathered there for about ten minutes holding tiki torches and chanting before boarding a bus and leaving the city. this comes two months after a white nationalist rally turned violent in charlottesville. one person was killed. the city says it's unconscionable that these people would return to charlottesville to intimidate and spread fear. take a look here. what you are looking at right now is just an emergency drill. no one hurt here. actors helped out first responders in montgomery county as they carried out a simulated mass shooting. the drill at walt whitman high happened a week after the tragedy in vegas. it allowed the emergency crews to practice their skills for a real-life worst case scenario. they ran toward danger to help save lives. >> yesterday, 95 names of firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice

the national fallen firefighters memorial in 'em itsburg. each name was read aloud and one of the names was john ung schneider. he was shot to death last year as he responded to a call for help. fire chief benjamin barksdale says this honor is bittersweet for his family as they continue to grieve his loss. >> it's still very difficult for them. for don. still breathing, still mourning the loss of her husband. they have a 3-year-old daughter. it's been very difficult. >> families of the fallen were presented with a red rose and folded american flag that had flown over the capitol building. this week is fire prevention week. we're working for you all week long to show you

surviving a fire. earlier this morning, we told you 80% of deadly fires begin inside of homes. so. >> so the important question is do you know where your sprinklers are in your home? chances are you may not have any. in d.c. sprinklers have only been required in new homes since 2011. in maryland, they've only been required since 2015. and look at this. in virginia, there are no requirements to have sprinkler systems in homes. so many homes don't even have them. we're going to go live to news 4's angie goff in southwest washington with more on how to improve your family's chances of survival during a fire. how important are the sprinklers, angie? >> reporter: well, eun, as you mentioned, these are laws that are longing for some people to realize there isn't a requirement in the state of virginia. the other ones were recently required. considering the fact that, according to the national fire

takes 90 seconds in many cases for a sprinkler, one sprinkler to put a fire out. we're going to demonstrate that a little later today. as you take a look behind me, we have a burn trailer on stand by through the national fire sprinkler association. we're going to show you that coming up later. first, i want to bring in battalion chief tony falwell with d.c. fire and ems. want to talk with you a little bit about why right now is a great time to start having these conversations. we're in fall. i know it's a little muggy out here. we're moving into the winter months. >> yes. we'll be moving into what we consider the fire season. people try to warm and heat their homes. they will be plugging up electrical heaters and things of that nature trying to stay warm. these are typically the times when we have a rise in fires. >> reporter: what is the leading cause of ohouse fires? >> there are several

house fire, from candles, cooking equipment, electrical equipment, dryers. things of that nature. those all contribute to house fires. >> reporter: take a look behind me in this burn trailer. everyday items, things like legos. brings to mind children. those at greatest risk of being victims, who would that be? >> that would most definitely be your younger children, your senior population. persons with mobility issues. people of that nature in homes. we most definitely want to make sure that when you're talking about those vulnerable populations that you plan two ways out. >> two ways out with a fire escape plan. one or two key things to remember with that. i know that we have video of the fire escape plan and we also have a handout here which we posted in our nbc washington app. a couple things to keep in mind with that. >> jt

the humidity was sitting on top of us. >> yes, it was. i was at strut your mutts saturday. it was sunny and humid. it felt like summer and everybody was sweating and the dogs were panting. but it was a fantastic event. this morning, though, it is humid and warm and breezy. we have rain headed our way. weather alert for today. we have heavy morning rain approaching the area. tapering off by 9:00 a.m. then we have cooler weather in the forecast later on into the week. we're watching the weekend, because we have a lot of rain chances. the weekend is looking pretty good. here's a look at the radar. most of the heavy rain near la ray. most near the yellows. winchester. the rest of the area seeing the lighter rain approaching the beltway. again, it's fairly light. we could be seeing light rain down 95 as well. temperatures in the mid-70s. it is warm and humid and breezy outside. winds in straight from the south. that's that tropical air. this is all because
