do you know where the sprinklers are in your homes. that's an important thing to noechlt chances are that you may not even have any sprinklers. in d.c., sprinklers have only been required since 2011. in maryland, they've only been required since 2015. and take a look at this. in virginia, there are no requirements to have sprinkler systems in your home. so many homes do not have them. we want to go live to news 4's angie goff. now she's in southwest washington with more on how to improve your family's chances of survival during a fire. angie, good morning. >> there's the smoke. >> reporter: i'm showing you what's going on behind us. i'm with shane ray, the national fire sprinkler association. what's going on here? >> so you hear the smoke alarms going off. that's early warning. now in the room with fire sprinklers, you see the sprinklers activate. the spriner
6:15 am
you'll watch this side go. our promotion is the fact that you got to have smoke alarms. get out, stay out and close the door. >> wow. >> this side, you'll see how fast. it took a significant fire. the smoke alarm goes off with smoke and the sprinkler only goes off with heat. it's only the closest sprinkler to the fire that goes off. but you'll see how much smoke is jean rated from the other side. >> i feel it was less than a minute that the sprinkler was able to get this under control. does that seem to be the case? >> this sprinkler is individually heat activated. it goes off at 155 degrees. we had fire to the ceiling like in our room without fire sprinklers. there's a missing link. >> reporter: as we look at the room without a fire sprinkler, you can see how rapidly the flames are spreading. you have how long to get out of the house before it becomes deadly? >> three to five minutes. fire
6:16 am
that's what we're seeing that's changed over last 20 years. look at how toxic the smoke is. we know it will fill up a 3200 square foot house. we're about to go to what we know is flashover. even with this wind, this is not normal in your house. but it's cooling that area. now you can see the floor catch fire, you can see all the decorations catch fire. so that's what we know as flashover. put it out. >> i know you want to save your trailer. at this point we want the firefighters to move in to extinguish the fire. keep in mind, i think we hit the 2-minute mark. in less than two minutes, this entire room engulfed in flames demonstrating how deadly and quickly everything from the picture frames, the couch, the legos gone like that. >> people thought fire doubled in size. fire grows exponentially. we often underestimate it.
6:17 am
what we've seen here is a key component that says smoke alarms, fire sprinklers and firefighters. that's the key to a fire in a modern home, a modern high-rise, a modern commercial building. >> how expensive is it to retrofit your house or to install sprinklers? >> retrofit is about double the cost is what it is when new. the codes required in new construction and that's where washington, d.c. and the state of maryland is one of those places that's led the country with the requirements. other states haven't done that. but new construction is what the code focuses on. then the old construction is when you bring it up, remodel, when you change it. those are times you ought to consider adding a component to it. >> reporter: we have more information up an our app about the different sprinkler laws. we want to let you know that we also -- although it's a controlled burn. we're completely safe. you guys made sure of that.
