that's what we're seeing that's changed over last 20 years. look at how toxic the smoke is. we know it will fill up a 3200 square foot house. we're about to go to what we know is flashover. even with this wind, this is not normal in your house. but it's cooling that area. now you can see the floor catch fire, you can see all the decorations catch fire. so that's what we know as flashover. put it out. >> i know you want to save your trailer. at this point we want the firefighters to move in to extinguish the fire. keep in mind, i think we hit the 2-minute mark. in less than two minutes, this entire room engulfed in flames demonstrating how deadly and quickly everything from the picture frames, the couch, the legos gone like that. >> people thought fire doubled in size. fire grows exponentially. we often underestimate it.

what we've seen here is a key component that says smoke alarms, fire sprinklers and firefighters. that's the key to a fire in a modern home, a modern high-rise, a modern commercial building. >> how expensive is it to retrofit your house or to install sprinklers? >> retrofit is about double the cost is what it is when new. the codes required in new construction and that's where washington, d.c. and the state of maryland is one of those places that's led the country with the requirements. other states haven't done that. but new construction is what the code focuses on. then the old construction is when you bring it up, remodel, when you change it. those are times you ought to consider adding a component to it. >> reporter: we have more information up an our app about the different sprinkler laws. we want to let you know that we also -- although it's a controlled burn. we're completely safe. you guys made sure of that.
