>> good afternoon, everybody. welcome to news 44:00. leon has the afternoon off. a violent weekend in the district ends with two young lives cut short. >> early sunday morning police make a pair of disturbing discoveries rather. young man found shot to death inside cars just about an hour and a few miles apart. at this point investigators don't think they are connected. >> this morning or this afternoon we are learning more about one of the victims. and we have the details now from pat collins who is on the scene. pat? >> reporter: jim, witnesses counted eight shots fired. they say five hit the victim. a case of cold blooded murder here in an anacostia. on the stage he was known as big o. omar rogers

they describe him as a young man who stayed in his own lane, just trying to provide for his two small sons. omar rogers, brother and number one fan of sean savoy, two-time met at wilson high school, rising star receiver at virginia tech. omar rogers gunned down sunday morning in the parking lot behind the union town bar & grill in anacostia. this is how sources tell the story. it was 3:45 sunday morning. omar had just finished performing at the union town bar and grill. he was in his car in the parking lot back behind the bar. a red car pulls into the alley, a man gets out of the red car. he walks over to omar. words are exchanged. then they say that man pulls a gun. he fires eight shots. five of the shots, they say, hit om

kammerer. doug, is nate moving out? >> nate is already out of here for the most part. it's up around the boston area. extremely fast moving storm at one time moving 50 to 60 miles per hour. we did see rain early this morning and still we have seen a couple scattered showers around the region. if you look at the radar right now, really nothing to show. we did have a couple light sprinkles in portions of montgomery and howard county. that is now over with. take a look at what we are dealing with here and that is nate way up towards boston. here it was early this morning bringing us some fairly heavy rainfall, now watching that moisture move to the boston area. what it's done, not just bring us beneficial rainfall. it has brought us some very intense heat and humidity for this time of year. take a look at the temperatures around our region. we're at 85 degrees right now. the average temperature is near 70. it's 86 in hagerstown, 82 in richmond, and it feels a lot hotter than this. we're going to talk much more about the heat, the humidity that's still to come examine the chance for shower activity for most of the we.

see you in minutes. >> thanks, doug. first at 4, a warning for parents in prince george's county this afternoon. henry wise junior high in upper marlboro say they have confirmed two cases of tb. school officials say they are meeting with parents to provide additional information about this. we don't know if the two patients are students. we are told the risk of exposure is low. it normally takes at least 8 hours of close contact with an infected person to contract tb. the school says it is working now to provide screening options for students. >> now to a developing story in the district, we just learned the car involved in this fiery crash over the weekend was stolen. two people are still in critical condition. a third in stable now. d.c. police tell us the car was speeding downhill crest drive southeast last night. the driver lost control and slammed that car into a row of trees. that's when it burst into flames. crews had to cut open the roof to rescue the people trapped inside. po

suspected the car was stolen because the license plates were missing. so far no arrests. tributes are coming in this afternoon for a grandmother recognized as a fixture in her community. a car hit and killed jewel louis saturday morning on h street northeast. news 4's derrick ward is live with reaction from family and friends. derrick, the 62-year-old worked on capitol hill for what, more than 30 years? >> reporter: more than 30 years. she worked at the office of the architect of the capital. she was well known there. but she was also well known in this community here. this is an accident or an incident that is indeed torn at the long-standing fabric of this community. you can see the memorial has grown up at the intersection where it happened and there are still some of the investigator's marks out there on the street on h street. it was just after 11:00 a.m. saturday morning, 62-year-old jewel lewis hall was crossing h street when she was hit by a van

street onto h. she was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital. she lives a few blocks from here. she was indeed a neighborhood fixture. she was known from everything, from heeding tfeeding the homel doing her errands, buying her lottery ticket. we talked to the family. they are torn up about this. amid all of the grief of the loss of the fixture of this community, they are choosing to remember the good times. >> we're not going to remember her by how she died, but we're going to remember her by how she lived and that she's been an incredible mother, friend, sister. >> mom. >> grandma, super woman, everything. >> reporter: now, police say that this accident is still under investigation. indeed detecters were out here earlier today canvassing some of the businesses here in hopes of get something surveillance footage that might have caught that ennis denlt. now, a person in the

you know, 19 years can sound like a lot of time unless you're thinking of it in terms of a child's life. 19 years is all ashanti billie's parents had with their daughter. >> ashanti grew up at prince george's county, then moved down to norfolk, virginia to follow her dreams, and those dreams ended last month when she was discovered dead. news 4's meagan fitzgerald just spoke with ashanti's parents today. >> yeah, meagan, through their grief they found a new mission. >> in trying to share that with us, they showed incredible strength. they weren't emotional because

god that ashanti is where she needs to be. they say this is all part of the plan. it's also a tragedy, though, that it's given them a new purpose. >> she wanted to open a bakery. that's been her dream, her goal and desire for years. >> reporter: ashanti billie was just 19 years old, but her parents shea she was driven and focused on her future. >> once again, going to something that was part of her passion, to help move forward in her future and that was the last time she was seen. >> reporter: ashanti was last seen on a navy base in norfolk, virginia in the morning of september 18th. her parents searched tirelessly until police say her remains were found near a church in charlotte, north carolina days later. now their mission is to make sure ashanti's legacy lives on. >> we started the ashanti foundation and our goal is to offer one scholarship in the beginning to a deserving student graduatingro

to open the door because someone on that bus allegedly threw a bottle out the window and that bottle hit his car. but the bus driver refused, concerned about the safety of the kids on board. you can hear the frightened students in the background. police tell us at first dorn stood in front of the bus, then jumped on the when the bus started moving. he was arrested and he is facing several charges. you know, some of the people on my facebook page who follow me, pat, i know we both posted this today, say what he did was wrong. but they also wonder what happened in the pursuit of this bottle throwing if it actually happened. and were there any repercussions for the kids. >> yeah, kids tend to be kids. they do things they're not supposed to do, but it's a good thing the driver did not open that door it appears that was a good decision to make on his part. during fall you're supposed to go to the mountains to see the leaves changing colors, but in colorado you'll see this.

8:00 a.m. dealing with cloud cover across the region. we're going to stick with those clouds during the day tomorrow. couple of showers isolated. i'm really not expecting much in the way of shower activity tomorrow. really should be a fairly nice afternoon. it will be warm. it will be humid. now, the wind is going to shift and we're going to see a little bit of a different pattern here moving in during tuesday into wednesday. look at wednesday now. here comes the shower activity. by 8:00 a.m. and those showers stick around most of the day, at least early in the day. a good chance for rain early in the day wednesday even n. afternoon, scattered showers sticking around during the day. wednesday could be a little bit of a witness one. and then on thursday more of a northeasterly flow develops a nasty day there, too. tomorrow mostly cloudy, warm, continues humid. heat index 85 degrees. nowhere near where it is today. it's soupy with the tropical air mass. tomorrow a little bitter. next couple of days back down to 75 on wednesday, cooler 69 on thursday and thursday is going to be one of those dreary showery days. could see drizzle during the day.

our storm team 4 meteorologist amelia dra amel amelia draper has what's on tap. >> the humidity due to nate, i want to show you this loop on the radar. this is the last 18 hours. you can see rain anywhere from the carolinas up to the great lakes. now we are looking at nate concentrated mainly over the new england area, pulling out of our region jut just an isolated shower out there right now. for most of us again, we're dry from here on out. take a look terrain falls from nate mainly this morning. washington picking up just over a half an inch. martinsburg over an inch of rainfall, dulles picking up half an inch of much needed rainfall. so nate did help to end our over three-week dry spell in the area. the area staying around an inch or less of rain. the high humidity levels doug was showing you feel like temperatures in the mid 90s also due in part to nate. there is more rain in the forecast this week. no tropical moisture.

>> reporter: reporting in em its burg, maryland, mark segraves, news 4. >> on to a developing story now, parts of wine country are on fire. it's out of control this afternoon in northern california. we've now learned today that two wild fires have grown to 14 wind driven fires that have killed one person and injured two others. some 20,000 people have had to evacuate napa valley. california fire officials say those blazes have destroyed at least 1500 buildings. it's unclear what sparked the fires that started over the weekend. >> you know that every second counts when it comes to surviving a fire in your home. in recognition of fire prevention week, we are working for you all week long, sharing what you need to do to keep you and your family safe. earlier this morning, d.c. fire officials performed a live demonstration on news 4 at 6:00 a.m. showing the difference that alarms and sprinklers can make. as you can see, with sprinklers, the fire on the lef

dry side of this, but take a look at this. here's the storm itself. this was the remnants of what was nate. nate making its way up through parts of the northeast right now. and moving extremely quickly. it was here this morning. it's already to boston and moving out to sea. that's not the only storm system we have going on. look at denver, colorado. yeah, the white, that is snow going on out there toward denver today. parts of that region picking up a few inches. with more on that storm and other storms going on across the country here's amelia. >> yeah, doug, we have seen snow in denver today. my girlfriend sent me a text message. she said we were in the 60s yesterday. before that we were near 80 degrees, and now it's 32 degrees and snowing. and we have some video from denver right now. i want to show that to you. then we're going to talk about the wild fires out in wine country out in california. but the snow today, that slushy heavy wet snow you can see the snow falling there. the city picked up anywhere from about 3 to 6 inches l potentially a little more in spot

west to california where wine country is dealing with devastating wild fires and the weather conditions not helping the wild fires at all. and i think you're seeing that video right now. a lot of damage in the santa rosa area and these fires continuing right now, but thankfully we should see some improvements with the weather conditions. but take a look, this is a picture i want to show you. this is from a satellite. these gray plumes are from the smoke from the wild fires. andrew friedman sending that out on twitter this afternoon. you can find that on my facebook and twitter pages. strong winds, dry conditions helping to spread the fires very quickly. so much so that the tubs fire around santa rosa has burned 35,000 acres and we're seeing 15, 100 structures destroyed, doug, from these wild fires. unbelievable devastation out in parts of california now. >> you mentioned those winds gusting upwards of 50 to 55 miles per hour today helping to spread those flames. now, for us we've been needing the rainfall. we're going to get some rain
