morning: getting out of the house at 3:00 in the morning. i had to turn the ac on in my car. >> yeah. it's still very warm. yesterday, we had that tropical air in place. it was really warm and humid. we had the morning rain. we're not dealing with the rain this morning. what all the rain leftover was areas of thick fog. warrenton, about less than a half mile visibility. we want to give you a heads up, we have patchy fog in the forecast. here's a look at satellite radar. a mix of clouds and some sunshine today. still, unseasonably warm, though, as we go through the afternoon. look at these temperatures. this is why you had to turn on your ac. it's 74 degrees in washington. some of the suburbs the mid to upper 60s. going through your tuesday, the commute patchy fog this afternoon. dry. we're back in the 80s. closer look at the forecast coming up. sheena and our weather team have been keeping a close

more than a dozen fires are burning across the state of california. take a look at this new video. a massive wildfire burning out of control in orange county. the entire side of that mountain is on fire and quickly moving towards the highway. at least 24 homes have been destroyed and about 500 miles away in california's wine country, the numbers are more shocking. at least ten people have died and about 100 people hurt. in sonoma county, 100 people reported missing and more than 1500 buildings destroyed. simply phenomenal amount of damage. at least 20,000 people have been ordered out of their homes as fires approached. homeowners said they had a minute to gather their families and a couple belongings before heading out. nbc's jennifer bjork land explains why they're having a tough time getting a handle on the fires. >> reporter: flames russia

northern california followed by wind gusts topping 50 miles an hour. >> it's insane. never seen anything like that. >> reporter: the governor declared a state of emergency. at least 15 major fires are burning across california from the wine country to orange county leaving at least ten dead, more than 100 injured. >> it's horrible. i couldn't stay because i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: california's highway patrol used helicopters to rescue more than 40 people who were trapped. in santa rosa, two area hospitals had to evacuate. one of them moving more than 100 patients through heavy smoke and nearby flames. >> this wind and fire behavior is relentless. >> reporter: at least 1500 homes and businesses now destroyed. in napa, jennifer bjorklund, nbc

look at that. these fires are even impacting the happiest place on earth. the fire burning in orange county left an eerie orange glo over disneyland. the park did stay open all day. cal fire is telling us the fire near disneyland is only 5% contained at this point. also developing this morning. this is video of police near texas tech taking a 19-year-old student into custody. he's accused of killing a campus police officer at police headquarters. he was taken into custody after they found drugs in his dorm room. while at the police station, he allegedly shot a campus officer and took off after a massive manhunt, daniels was taken into custody. this morning a family in bowie is heartbroken and waiting for answers. their daughter was killed in a li

carrie ann -- she was celebrating her 22nd birthday. >> it's hard to express the amount of pain and distress you feel. >> she grew up in bowie and enrolled at temple university. police say she was speeding in a black bmw, ran a red light and crashed into a car. she allegedly drove away from the scene and hit another car. police tried to block her in, but she ran over an officer and police fired several shots hitting her. she later died at the hospital. >> that kind of activity is not rational. i can't explain why she wouldn't have listened to command. >> her dad is waiting for the autopsy results. the toxicology report will determine if hitton was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. the montgomery county school board is going to consider

scrapping spring break. they're considering making it a four-day weekend instead of a full week. this wouldn't take effect until the 2018-19 school year. another idea on the table, eliminate the days given to teachers for planning purposes. the school district says it is still gathering community feedback and likely won't take a vote until next month. worried over who is the real first lady. melania trump is firing back against ivana. it started when ivana was promoting her new book and says she has a direct line to the white house and called herself the first lady. while melania trump's spokesperson fired back. it says there is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex. this is unfortunately, only attention-seeking and self-serving noise. wow. here's a question for you. what would the white house look

a judge in michigan granted parental rights to a convicted sex offender. christopher mayor so la raped a 12-year-old girl. she got pregnant, had a child. dna tests confirmed he's the father. now he has the right to visit him. this came when the mother applied for food stamps. the judge ordered him to pay monthly child support. his attorney said he didn't ask for the right to see the child and does not plan to visit her. this morning, we're learning new details about how harvey weinstein begged not to be fired by his own company over allegations of sexual harassment. a letter written has been leaked. part of it reads, "i am desperate for your

shared their life stories of men who made a lasting impression around the dmv. the boys learned about our late colleague, jim vance and basketball star and prince george's county native kevin durant as well. it is fire prevention week. if you're sitting down to breakfast, you may want to talk about holding a family fire drill. a new survey from nationwide insurance say 50% of people know what to do in a fire. nearly half don't. only one in five families regularly practice escape plans at home. in effect, a plan involves knowing where to go, checking smoke alarms and running through the plan in two minutes or less. every member of your family needs to know what to do. even the younger kids. as news 4's justin finch shows us, that's why prince george's county firefighters are taking that message right to the classrooms. >> reporter: the slam of a

right now, there are massive power outages. getting information out is getting difficult. this is new video of one huge wildfire in orange county. the side of a mountain is on fire and advancing towards the highway. there are more than a dozen fires burning and emergency teams are asking tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes. some are even rescuing people by helicopter. at this point, it's too early to know how bad the damage is. i lived in california for eight years. i covered a lot of those fires. it is tough, tough going. these fires are impacting the happiest place on earth. look at the video. the fire left an eerie orange glow over disney. these images are bizarre. it looks like the sky was painted orange, in fact. some visitors
