first at 4:00, california catastrophe, the fast moving wildfires getting more fierce by the hour and turning more deadly. >> at least 15 people now dead. several schools are among the hundreds of structures damaged or destroyed. >> we have live team coverage for you storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is in the storm center. we'll get to him. we're going to begin with nbc's gina kim on the ground in south l.a. gina, set the scene for us there. >> reporter: well, pat and leon, let me show you how random this fire was. the two homes you can see behind me, completely destroyed. take a look at the rest of this neighborhood. so many homes left intact, a lot of neighbors are saying, why me, why not someone else, and vice versa this morning. this is how a lot of neighborhoods here in anaheim hills look today. we have about 30 homes and structures that have been destroyed or damaged. the good news is this is the only major fire here in southern california and it is now

contained. and no lives have been lost and one fire fighter suffered minor injuries. a completely different story up in northern california. we have had 15 lives lost up there as you said, some 2000 homes and buildings completely destroyed, and here is the scary part. 150 people are unaccounted for. they have been reported as missing up there in california's wine country. in all, we have 17 major fires actively burning throughout the state right now, prompting federal and state emergency declarations. and we have about 180 square miles that have burned up in just the past 36 hours, very scary numbers. >> jinah, any word on containment? how are they doing? what kind of progress are they making fighting the flames? >> reporter: well, you know, up in northern california i have to say containment ask almost nonexistent and that's because there are so h

down here it's a much better story. we are about 20 miles east of disney land so we're in a pretty populated area and we have about 25 percent containment down here. now i want to toss it to chief meteorologist doug. >> thank you, jinah. we're going to continue to watch the story. this is going to play out, guys. we had hurricane harvey, we had hurricane irma and hurricane maria. devastating storms. this is on that level in many places especially the santa rosa area. everything in red, this is the sacramento river valley, this is a red-flag warning rmt. that means when you have fires that are ongoing or are going to continue to increase as far as the coverage goes, very dry conditions here. we've got those fires out there. tomorrow the winds come back. yesterday we had winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour. today almost no wind so they're able to start to contain contai today. but tomorrow the winds really start to pickup. that's when those red flag warnings go into place, extremel

tomorrow, winds 15 to 30 miles an hour with gusts to 45. once again, that will fan those flames and those fires will continue to grow during the day tomorrow. this is going to go down in history as one of the possibly worst fires in california history and they continue right on through the next couple of days. now, as far as our weather is concerned, a lot different here. for us, it's the opposite end of the spectrum. we have rain that is making its way into our area. we'll talk about when the rain moves in, how long it sticks around and what to expect next in my forecast. >> all right, doug, thank you. breaking developments on the harvey weinstein harassment story. today the new yorker published an audio recording from an nypd sting operation in 2015. it is a recording between weinstein and a foreign model who appears to be rejecting his advances. >> i'm telling you right now -- >> what do we have to do here? >> nothing. i'm going to take a shower. you sit there and have a drink. >> can i stay on the bar? >> no, please come in. on everything. i'm a famous

but over the weekend something snapped. police say bowie native kerry ann was involved in two hit and run accidents down in miami beach. police say she tried to run over an officer which prompted another police officer to shoot and kill her. news 4's chris gordon spoke to the girl's father today. >> reporter: kerry doesn't believe that the video of the shooting tells the whole story. it seems to show his daughter kerry ann in a bmw refusing a police order to get out of the car, driving off, hitting one officer and being shot by another officer. [ gun fire ] >> something was -- i really believe that. and anybody can point fingers at some sort of substance abuse that was going on or alcohol. i'm not buying that, you know. when children or young adults have these kinds of incidents, there is something deeper going on. >>

temple university student who was in miami beach with a friend celebrating her 22nd birthday. her father says she dreamed of becoming a lawyer, fighting against social injustice. >> the best thing her father can do is tell people about her. so, they won't have the memory of what's on social media of the incident. >> reporter: he says a year ago he started noticing something strange in his daughter's behavior. he asked for help, seeking a mental evaluation for her. >> and i tried to do it on three separate occasions with the court in prince george's county, and they said they couldn't do anything because my daughter was never diagnosed with a mental illness. >> reporter: he tells me he's going to miami beach to talk to police to try to get answers and figure out why this happened. then he will bring his daughter's body back home for a funeral, surrounded by the family and friends who love her. in bowie, la

>> reporter: hours after forbes magazine said president trump dismissed an nbc report that tillerson called him a moron. if he did, quote, i guess we'll have to compare iq tests and i can tell you who is going to win. >> he wasn't questioning the secretary of state's intelligence. he made a joke. maybe you guys should get a sense of humor and try it sometimes. >> reporter: experts say the back and forthwith temer son could hurt america's standing with other countries. >> so, therefore, concerned if they get in agreement and understanding with the secretary, it simply won't hold up. >> reporter: the president insisting he does have confidence in his secretary of state. meanwhile, president trump firing another shot at fellow republican senator bob corker, calling him little bob corker, and saying "the new york times" set him up to sound like a fool. the war of words inside the party putting republicans in an awkward position. >> we'll have differences but at the end of the day this back

we're following some breaking news right now. going to show you some live pictures just coming into our newsroom from chopper 4. this is a scene from a gas leak near broad birch drive and plum orchard drive in the silver spring area of montgomery county. several buildings have been evacuated there including we're told an assisted living facility. montgomery county fire fighters say a construction crew mistakenly hit a gas line. washington gas is working right now to fix it. you see some of the crews there on the ground. we'll keep an eye on the situation and keep you up to date. >> all right. in the meantime, anger in a loudou

despite a guilty plea, dozens of parents believe that justice will not come in the death of a 5 month old child. tristan schultz was killed last summer when a driver hit his stroller and his mother who was pushing it across the street. bureau reporter david culver reports. >> reporter: prosecution says the friends of the schultz family say they are struggling with what they consider to be a lack of justice and a lack of remorse. supporters of the schultz family and especially baby tristan carrying shirts and blue rib ons in memory of the 5 month old. last summer he hit mindy as she pushed the stroller. they were in the crosswalk. the baby died. last month prosecutors here in loudoun county decided to drop the most serious involuntary manslaughter charge against miller. she said they didn't have enough evidence. today miller pleading no contest and guilty to reckless driving and failure to yield charges. a judge found him guilty on both counts. the most frustrating for the schu f

supporters is that they say miller hasn't showed really any remorse, hasn't apologized for his actions. miller's attorneys say they are not going to comment yet until they get through this legal process. we know that attorneys on both sides are going to be back here on friday. they will then determine a date for sentencing which could happen before the end of the year. reporting in loudoun county, i'm david culver, news 4. >> first at 4:00, there are new reports today that nfl owners may force players to stand for the national anthem. owners are expected to talk about a rule change during meetings next week. in a memo to owners today, commissioner roger goodell encouraged unity but estopped short of demanding that players stand. he also said the league will introduce a new platform for players to promote their social causes. this all comes just days after the vice-president walked out of colts game when players knelt during the anthem. >> well, the nats need to make a

take a look now. we have a live picture. carol is down there somewhere and, man, if you've never been to wrigley, this is one of the cool est spots in the world when you're talking about baseball. so cool, so much fun. that's why i wish i could rain on their parade. i think i am with some actual rain that's coming down uchlts we're hoping to do it with the nats bats. take a look at the radar here. here's the current radar. you notice the rain moving right into chicago. now, most of the light rain you see there, it's not hitting the ground. we're watching the areas of the yellow, the darker greens. that's the area that i'm watching very closely. and you see it here moving up toward the north and east toward chicago. if we time this out here, time this out, it's about two hours 20 minutes. so that puts us at about 6:40 in the evening. so, we start at 5:30. we have about an hour's game time. we may get three innings in and then the rain comes in. we may see a delay for about an hour to two hours and then they may try again as we see a little bit in the way of some light rain. i would not be surprised if they

this storm. or with this system. but really, guys, it's going to be one of those things they either delay or postpone. as far as what we're dealing with now, nice afternoon, but it is hot. 84 degrees. winds are on the calm side. i look for a high of 83 today thinking we'd be cooler than yesterday. the high today was 88 degrees because of the sunshine. just 88, incredible. the heat index, that's out there, too. let's look at the numbers. 82 winchester, 85 in manassas. current heat index is close to 90 in some areas. nothing on the radar. we're not going to see any rain this afternoon or early this evening, but we are going to start to see some rain encroaching from the south. you see it back here. not a lot, right? but we're going to see more rain and that rain in chicago actually moves our way during the day tomorrow. so, we're expecting that rain. here it is around 7:00. notice a couple of showers, but notice down to the south we're starting to see more rain. down in our southern zone, northern neck parts of southern maryland by 11:00. tomorrow rain off and on just about all day long. here we are around the noon hour and that's just kind of

mother addicted to heroin and she talked about a time her mother actually asked her to take part in a drug deal. listen to this. >> one time, i think i was around 7 or 8, she actually made me do a drug deal for her. >> a drug deal? like what did she ask you to do? >> she put some -- either heroin or cocaine in a napkin or something, and she said run up to that house, go get the money and give this to them. >> that little girl shows incredible bravery. i've watched the interview earlier and nearly broke down because she seemed so strong, yet vulnerable. she came over to you and gave you a hug. she clearly needed some consoling, but she showed such strength. why is she speaking out about this? >> she was really clear about this, pat. she wants to help other kids. she's old enough to understand this is happening to a whole lot of kids out there and most of them don't have a voice the way we offered her a voice. so, that's what she wanted to do. we talked to her today. she and her family watched the piece together

aired on nightly news. they're really proud of her. i'm proud of her, you know. i just met her and i'm really proud of her for speaking out. >> she's amazingly composed, considering what she's been through. it's been amazing. you're going to other states as well. you're going to go to massachusetts tonight to a school that's been hit hard by the crisis. tell us about that. >> it's on cape cod, leon. beautiful picturesque vacation spot, but they also have a very big opioid problem, particularly the heroin and fentanyl. and we go to a school, east fal mouth elementary. cute children, but a lot at home are being impacted by this because parents are using, or friends parents, in some cases parents have died. they're in the fourth grade, six parents have been lost, in the fourth grade alone. four parents across the whole school. the principal and administrators are doing everything they can. that's what you'll see tonight, is the effort that they are making to embrace these kids and give them a safe space at school is really remarkable.

this light on this issue. the campaign is over but that issue has not gone away. nice going, kate. good to see you. >> thank you. >> folks, you can see kate's story tonight on nbc nightly news coming up tonight at 7:00 right after news 4 at 6:00. >> first at 4:00 today, two brothers pleaded guilty for their roles in the deadly shooting of a prince george's county police officer. bureau chief tracee wilkins is live from the courthouse in upper marlboro with more details on this case. tracee. >> reporter: pat, inside of the courtroom today in the upper marlboro courthouse, police officers packed that courtroom. in the midst of all of that, we saw mr. and mrs. coleson holding a picture of their son jakai facing the judge, facing the defendants. they want to make sure no one ever forgets what happened to their boy. elijah and malik ford say they are guilty of contributing to the death of prince george's county detective jakai coleson. they also a

as many police officers as possible. michael ford sprayed the prince george's county district 3 police station in bullets in march of 2016. his brother malik ford was looking at the possibility of life in prison for recording the shootout as it unfolded and miss directing officers who searched for the gunman as he fired. but through a plea deal his time in jail is capped at 20 years, and his brother elijah at 12 years. >> it does help. closure, however it comes, is beneficial to healing. >> reporter: during an exchange of gun fire, plain clothes detective jakai coleson was shot and killed. that landed two of the brothers with exxon spir si and second degree murder charges. as it stands, the actual shooter is the only one looking at the possibility. life in prison now. >> i am personally gratified by the fact that the people who set this chain of events in motion are being held accountable. >> reporter: now, michael ford's attorney told me that his client

a look at the latest fall foliage report, though, doesn't show much color yet in our area. we are starting to see low to moderate color, but out towards the mountains, shenandoah national park really showing some beautiful fall foliage in-n-out. more on my facebook and fit twitter changes. how do they change color during the fall months? the orange is always in the leaves. what happens is the green, the clor fill stops being produced as the days get shorter and the nights start to get cooler and that green kind of fades away revealing the reds and orange. the purple is more difficult and more related to the weather. we want cool days, nights that aren't below freezing and that's really going to bring out those colors. now, everyone is asking when should i check out the fall color, doug. looking at the numbers today, from november 1st to about november 10th, in our area is when you want to check out the fall color here. >> that's why it always looks so good right round halloween. per fort
