>> a car and tanker started leek this morning and forced people out of the home. >> christen on the scene this morning. any progress since this morning? >> reporter: yeah, a lot of progress, circumstance hours in six hours into this now but serious situation. a haz/mat team got done unloading fuel off the truck. you can see the tanker truck behind the one moving. these haz/mat crews has to be so precise so no fire or explosion. i want to show you also, take a look at the green truck sitting here. that truck is on standby. it is here as precaution if something should spark a fire, the truck would spray foam to attack it. now, the car is still wedged under the tanker. the truck driver was backing

early this morning, around 5:00, the woman driving the car was going down east clonial. somehow she ran into the side of the truck. firefighters had to cut her out. that took 30 minutes. we are told her injuries are not life threatening. . now, firefighters have evacuated three homes in the area as a precaution. >> they were inside what we call a hot zone. so obviously our biggest threat was threat of fire on tanker catching fire. we didn't want anybody in the immediate area. but now we have the leak stopped. we have a protective foam blanket on the ground. >> so, again, next thing that's going to happen out there, they are going to try to get that car from underneath the tanker truck now that they have all of the fuel off of the truck. now, some fuel also leaked on to the ground. there is a red truck out here today. and that

northwest. police back there still gathering evidence. and neighbors say it's a bitter sweet comfort. they are hoping that all the work going on back there will lead them to a shooting suspect. . a real life nightmare minutes after midnight. >> everyone ran upstairs and cut everything off and stood by to see what was going to happen. >> reporter: this mother recalling her fear and reaction to the sound of gunfire. her home's halloween declarations put up for a good nature square, paling in comparison to the real horror of bullets of a triple shooting just feet from her home and her family. what do you tell your kids when you hear noises like that. >> i really don't know what to tell them. they were sleeping, so i didn't have to tell them anything, so they really don't know what happened last night. >> i heard fire and calledhe

police and heard four more when i was on the phone. >> reporter: this father lives nearby and perhaps is holding his daughter a little closer this morning. overnight and into the morning d.c. police and crime scene investigators were on the scene of 8th street between rittenhouse street hand roxborough place northwest taking photos, gathering clues, with particular focus on this tan colored home. nearby, three men were gunned down. two died. and a third was rushed to the hospital. and a lot of concern right now for the neighbors, and also families, lots of schools around here, too. so police are really trying to get a handle on who this person involved in this shooting might be. they are right now looking for a black bmw that they believe has some involvement in that shooting overnight. we have been on the phone with ts police trying to gather more details about the three victims. we can tell one has not been identified who died. second who died is about

years old we are told. and the lone victim in the hospital seriously in critical condition we are told he's 22 years old. we are live i'm justin finish back to you in the studio. >> justin finch. thank you. and a third person was killed notice district also overnight. d.c. police somebody shot this man on hunt place in northeast near the border with maryland. this was late last night. elementary school is just a few minutes from this area but not clear, police have not revealed who killed this man. we are still working it learn how this massive house fire started in arlington. two people escaped and one had to be rescued from the home on north ivy street early this morning. that person is in critical condition. they tweeted these photos early this morning. one shows the home incomplete fireball. and the other one shows rescue. be sure to keep an eye on the nbc washington app as we learn

questions are swirling after a disturb tg allegation against a karate instructor in montgomery county. frank is charged with abusing a 15 year old student. he owns the karate studio. the victim tells police that he in frop rately touched her sometime between january and the months of june of this year. now, just despite the allegations, dozens of kids and their parents showed up to support the instructor last night. >> he helped me a lot. self defense. when i was bullied when i was younger. he taught me to stand up for myself and basically taught me everything that i know today. >> detectives say there may be more victims. so they want parents to speak to their kids to see if there was any type of inappropriate contact with the man that you see on your screen. take a good look at this picture here. d.c. police are looking for the

anthem. that led to a tweet this morning from president trump. he wrote, quote, it is about time that roger goodell of the nfl is finally demanding that all players stand for our great national anthem, respect our country. end quote. as concerns mount over the risk of concussion ns football players, the number of young kids playing football continues to decline. and a new study is acting fuel to the fire. joining us now talking about mental health risks associated with youth football. fl now you are telling us a physical risk but mental risk. >> right. this was an interesting study that looked at 214 football players that played high school, colt e college or up to the pros. and kwha they sought out to find the age they started to play football had impact on future mental health issues. and what they found is that the younger the kids or the

the people or these men started playing football, the worst their long-term outcome. and the cut off age here was 12 years old. so if you started playing football before the age of 12, even if you stopped playing after high school, or if you kept playing, the key was the age at which you started. >> interesting. >> those people had three times the risk of developing depression compared to those who started playing football after the age of 12. and twice the risk of having problems with something called executive functioning, which is your ability to organize and plan. they also had behavioral regulation problems. and general increases in apathy or lack of interest in things. >> tand that's interesting because it doesn't matter how long you play, but it matters it the age. >> that's what they found to be critical factor. >> that's a recent study that showed no relationship between youth football and future problems. how do you assess these differences in the two studies? >> i think the key here was

right. so you always have to pay attention to where is the money coming from. and what they did, there were also some ditches here in terms of the study. this particular study i'm talking about looked at over 200 people. that study looked at only 45 players and majority of those did not play youth football. so majority of them started playing when they were over the age of 12. so it's not comparing apples to apples. >> that is key factor. so is there something unique about the brain function, especially in younger ages, that accounts for the changes you are talking about when they do start playing football at a young age? >> yes. so the key here is that ages 9 through 12 seem to be a period of rapid brain development. so this is just a critical time for your brain in terms of its long-term development. in particular, there are regions called the hippocampus and amygdala which are involved in mood elevation and these undergo a lot of change. so if you are

in the head, maybe not to the concussion, there is a risk you'll get long-term problems. it's interesting they did a study, even if you didn't get a concussion, the average football player has 250 head impacts per season. >> and they have to add up. >> they have to add up you would think. we don't have the data but common sense probably. >> football is not only contact foot. you are doing headers in soccer. what about other sports? >> i don't know. i don't think the focus is out. the primary focus is on football because of all this traumatic enself lopy stuff that are having problems and suicide. these other sports with involved but don't require as much head involvement. so we know with soccer our kids play soccer, they are not allowed to do headers until the age of 11. so sports can make accommodations. talk they might

more than a dozen wildfires are burning across northern california right now. >> this drone video shows reality for families in santa rosa. decades of hard work now reduced to rubble and ashes. look at that devastation here. so far more than 2,000 homes and businesses are completely destroyed. the fires are blamed for at least 17 deaths and close to 200 injuries and more than 100 people remain missing. more than 20,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. that was as of tuesday night. they tried to grab whatever they could to get out. >> went through the roof. smashed through t then we drove right over the top of the flames, down aurora lane which is burning on either side. >> napa valley the states wine country, is one of the areas hardest hit by the flames. just incredible to see those pictures. >> wan

this morning they said it looked like a bomb has gone off. that's how much destruction. >> that's awful. and i was looking at the winds, they were rolling at 70 to 80-mile-per-hour through the valleys. 75 is category 5 hurricane. so they were flying through there. >> and spreading it so quickly. and the winds are still going to stay up today. then they are going to die down. then they pick back up on friday and higher so dealing with that for quite some time unfortunately for them. and they are going to have to contain them at some point but going to be a while. >> all right. some rain around here still muggy in portions in our area. to the north still seeing a little bit of that cloud cover and some drizzle. that's what we'll be dealing with right now and continuing through the day. so scattered showers through the day. now we do have some

temperatures into thursday and friday. so weekend looks fantastic. some rain through southern maryland and up towards the eastern shore, and then also along the mason dixon line where they are getting more moderate rain in spots. temperatures in 70s. some areas in the 60s. this is where they'll stay today. so we ra little on the muggy side unfortunately. but, again, 70s throughout your day. we will have rain also thursday into friday. maybe a few spotty showers, drizzle and low clouds into friday. but look at that as we head into the weekend. we dry out. scattered showers with isolated spots of moderate rain. that will continue into the overnight. then spotty showers through the day tomorrow. continue through the morning commute and into the evening commute. and even going into friday morning. so dealing with

there are new questions about whether police could have done more to stop the deadly mass shooting in las vegas. >> police say stephen paddock shot and wounded a hotel guard six minutes before the shooting started. originally said he was shot during the massacre. mgm says they cannot comment but released a statement saying they are not sure the new time line is accurate. this morning nbc has exclusive audio of a hotel engineer calling for help when the shooting started. >> someone is firing a gun up here. >> the engineer called his superiors about the shooting on the 32nd floor. it's not clear when police were told there was a man shooting. six minutes after the shooting the security guard paddock turned his gun on concert goers outside. 58 people died and hundreds were more hurt. the family of that women

daughter may have not have been mentally i'll. she was shot by police on sunday. after refusing to get out of her car, that's when officer fired several times at her car. her father says that he has been concerned about her mental health for sometime now. >> you know, something was not health wise going on with my daughter. i really believe that. and anybody can point fingers at, you know, some sort of substance abuse that was going on or alcohol. i'm not buying that. >> he says that he tried to secure a mental evaluation for her through the county court three times but says the court didn't follow-through because she didn't have a previously diagnosed condition. teachers convicted of crimes against students but their licenses not revoked. news 4 eye team investigation is raising questions how

investigation including a teacher accused of misconduct with a 14-year-old student managed to get a new job in la new d.c. school within months. scott mcfarland news 4. a new play called into the wilderness, takes the stage tomorrow. the producer joins us now. good morning to you. >> hi, how are you? >> i'm doing well. thanks for being here with us. >> sure. >> so tell me about this production. fiction? documentary? what are we looking at here? >> actually based on the real life story of six families that i interviewed together with the director and cowriter over the course of almost two years. i run a theater company called on guard arts. and i think that we are living in a very complicated world right now in the 21st century

connection between parents and kids. >> what kind of research do you have to do over these two years to talk to six different -- what we are seeing is six different stories within this production. how do go about your research for that? >> this came from my own personal experience with my son who really struggled and fell off the rails. and i had to make the decision as a parent that this was outside of my control. so i decided to send him to a wilderness therapy program. and it was probably one of the most difficult experiences of my life. soy said what's going on with parents and kids out there across the country? and i called up the head of the program and said can i get access to the stories? he sent out letters. and i got barraged with parents who wanted to tell their stories. because everybody i know suffers from some kind of difficulty in their family, with anxiety, depression, alcoholism. and nobody wants to talk about it. >> talk about it. >> so here's a theater production ha let's us all come in the room and all be
