there. let's get to wtop's jack taylor first. he's got breaking news on the roads. >> i do. unfortunately, 95 going southbound in stafford. the crash occurred overnight. unfortunately, in center point parkway, traffic -- traffic diverted at exit 140. be aware. you can hop back on after you roll south on route 1. northbound lanes are unaffected. they were hoping to have all travel lanes open by 5:00. but with some of the rain showers, that may be hampering the cleanup. they want to make sure everything is cleaned off the roadway before traffic is down that stretch. 95 southbound diverts at 6:30 on route 1. northbound lanes unaffected. >> jack, thanks so much. the time is 5:02. we want to head out to the wharf in southwest washington. somara theodore is there. it's wet -- is the weather going to

you think? >> you know, it could. but i don't think it's going to have a major impact. by the way, this place is going to be a hit. it's amazing. let's take a look at the radar. when we got here about an hour ago, there was drizzle coming down. but things have dried out. i think that's going to be what we'll see throughout the day. taking a look at your wharf day planner. the opening ceremony kicks off around noon. it will be cloudy and we could see drizzle. temperatures in the upper 60s. the good news, it will be mainly dry, little cloud cover. on the gloomy side. winds will pick up. not a complete washout. we are going to be seeing cloudy conditions maybe some drizzle. have the umbrella handy. otherwise, i'd say i'd come down here. >> i would come down if i could. the nats game is on later. i got to be watching that too. somara, thank you. a lot of stuff going on today. 67 degrees in the district right now.

skies and it's gloomy outside right now. northwest winds at 15 miles an hour. already breezy. going through the day, look at the temperatures. we're talking about mid to low 60s as we go through the afternoon. so it's going to feel a little different today. we're going to keep the gray skies in the forecast. a chance for maybe a light shower today. it's not going to be anything impacting the nats game. that's at 8:08 tonight. temperatures will be around 60 degrees throughout the game. the drizzle will stay in the forecast today and tomorrow. we'll talk about a weekend warmup and when we'll finally be dry straight ahead. happ goes back to the wall. and that ball is gone! a grand slam home run in the 8th. and a stunned silence falls over wrigley field. >> yeah. that silence soued

there are a few things that you need to know here. first of all, the game gets under way at 8:00. and something to keep in mind if you're not driving. that really is not advice. metro rail will not be staying open late tonight. the last green line train to greenbelt is going to depart at 11:48. plan accordingly. this game may very well go beyond that. you have to keep that in mind in terms of your logistics and planning for how you're going to get home. other options here. the circulator. they've extended to union station running until 1:00 a.m. you can bring your bike as well. of course, there's that baseball boat that can pick you up here. that's always convenient if you're headed to alexandria. the nationals have been to the playoffs on three other occasions but never made it past the first round. the hope here is that all of that is going to change tonight. back to you guys. >> megan mcgrath, this is going to be a great

this is the spot where you come to catch a paddleboat ride or to take a kayak or to catch a free ferry to east potomac park. all of the activities here. i'm going to show you the swing and maybe you can ride that. a full day of activities planned throughout the day to kick off the opening weekend. where you have all of the restaurants featured, the hotels, the music venues, you mentioned kevin bacon. that's one of the free concerts you'll be able to see this weekend. of course, the anthem theater, that venue is sold out. but there's so much more for you. a big focus throughout this weekend and throughout this new wharf experience on being able to come down here for dining, for shopping, for recreation, entertainment and it is a sight to see. definitely a different experience from my childhood. you still could come down and get your crabs, your live crabs all the way dow

3500 homes and businesses destroyed. with all the devastation, there is some good news about survival. reunited with first responders who saved their lives last night. sunday night the family's home was surrounded by fire. a police helicopter flew in to save them, but the family of five could not fit inside. so the father instead said go without me. the helicopter was eventually able to circle back, pick up the father just in time before that house was overcome with fire. eun and chris, i can't even imagine. >> thanks so much. boys club no more. the boy scouts welcoming girls to their groups but not everyone agrees with the inclusion. we'll tell you who is against it still ahead. >> we're talking about a drizzly kind of cool day today. temperatures staying in the 60s. but you will notice not much clearing

breaking news on the roads. jack taylor is here with a warning. >> stafford on i-95 southbound. there was a diesel spill at centerport parkway. traffic is able to exit on now from centerport parkway on to 95 south. traffic behind it, unfortunately, you have to hop off at 630 in stafford. closure at glebe road due to a downed tree across the roadway. crews saying it will take a couple of hours before the roadway is reopened. a tough ride for virginians. please be cautious. back to you. >> jack, thanks for that warning. one of the women from our area who was shot during the las vegas massacre is doing better this morning. tina frost's parents say she's following the nurses' commands and is able to

she also had a visit at the hospital from former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. she grew up in anne arundel county. there will be a fundraiser tonight at a restaurant. the restaurant will donate part of your checks to the family to pay for medical bills and expenses. in the face of a life-threatening situation, would you know how to save another person's life? >> after the las vegas shooting, about 80 people signed up for this trauma case. participants were taught how to treat different wounds. for example, students learned how to properly tie a tourniquet and how important to pack and compress a wound to help stop the excessive blood flow. the idea of the course, we're working on stopping violence, we can at least stop the bleeding. go to our nbc washington app for more information on these classes. a battle on the turf between the congressional mean machines and

had a special moment this year. congressman steve scalise made a special appearance at the football game wednesday night. the congressman still recovering was on his feet there thanking the members of the capitol police football team who helped save his life during the shooting at a congressional baseball practice back in june. for the fourth year in a row, the capitol police came out on top. the game raises money for several charities. lot of fun. looking good out there. >> yeah. no surprise that the capitol police beat the members of congress. >> you can tweet him. >> feel free. i have no shame in saying that. the big moment is finally here. in a matter of hours, 20,000 people going to make their way to the wharf for the grand opening weekend. >> this is going to be very exciting. with that many people near the

southwest waterfront, you know there's going to be a lot of traffic, a lot of headaches. we want to get you there stress-free as possible. our justin finch is working for you down on the wharf with the best ways to get there. justin, give us these tips. we'll need them. >> reporter: oh, yeah. eun. the key word is stress-free. right now, all is calm and quiet. in a few hours, it will be elbow to elbow. perhaps bumper to bumper as well. both are unavoidable. we have a way to get you there to spend more time here instead of getting here. like the water taxi. from georgetown or alexandria, try the water taxi for dock to dock service. perhaps you come in from closer by. perhaps in southwest. there is a wharf shuttle bus that will do that for you. the pickup on the l'enfant plaza metro and retail area. the national mall at 7th and 7th and maran

after more than 100 years, kids no longer have to be a boy to be a boy scout. >> the boy scouts of america says the miss tore i can change will provide parents with more options. it was a unanimous decision. starting next year girls can join boy scouts but in girl-only dens. >> but the girl scouts say they are the girl experts and the best girl leadership organization in the world. in a blog post, the organization says, in part, "the need for female leadership has never been clearer or more urgent than it is today and only the girl scouts have the expertise to give girls and young women the tools they need for success." >> i don't know. my own personal opinion. i think it's going to be a small percentage of people. i still think most girls interested in scouting will go to girl scouts.

tonight. stephen strasburg and the nationals force a win or take all game 5 against last year's world champion series, the chicago cubs. whoever wins, moves on in the playoffs. whoever loses is out. done. the game at 8:00. you know we're saying go nats. >> you're not going to get much sleep tonight. >> no. >> nearly 2 dozen wildfires burning out of control in california. 23 people have died in northern california. the fire destroyed 3500 buildings. nearly 200 people have been reported missing. authorities think a lot of them are safe. but just haven't been able to call any of their friends and family because the cell towers have been destroyed. new details on that massive house fire in arlington we brought you as breaking news on "news4 today." weave learned the fire on north ivy street began on the porch. officials are unsure of how it started. it caused $300,000 in damage. look at the images here. two people were able to escape. one man had to be rescued.

morning. >> jay, we're seeing the destruction, but there are people whose lives are being affected here. how are they coping with all this damage? >> reporter: well, eun, chris, good morning to you. many thousands pouring into shelters like the one behind me here. this is something that is continuing for the next several days, according to forecasters and fire teams. so the shelters, two dozen or morissette up across the strike zone, really becoming a place of safety for families. thousands rushed ahead of the flames to get into areas like this. let's set the stage. overnight, the winds picking up and pushing the flames. the fire is expanding right now and will continue over the next several days. firefighters getting outside help. strike teams from across the country, along with the national guard moving in to try and support those along the frontlines. the mission here, though, continues to be containment on one side, but primarily the

nationals park, which is always great. keep in mind, however, if you are headed to the game, metro is not going to be staying open late tonight. so that's going to affect a lot of people here. now, these are the tweets that adam tuss got last night after he reported that metro would not be staying up late. the majority of people not happy about the situation. they're trying to figure out how they're going to get home after the game. this game may very well go beyond when metro closes. just something to keep in mind here. now, if you are going to the game, here are some things to know. first of all, it gets under way at 8:00 tonight. the pitcher has not yet been named. the d.c. circulator bus talking about transportation, that is an option for folks. they're going to be actually staying open later than usual with service until 1:00 in the morning. a lot of people
