opening ceremony today. so much for you to see and hear throughout the weekend. many events down here. a little earlier this morning we talked about the sites and the sounds that are down here. we have many restaurants, many shops. lots of things for you to do and see and take advantage of. this new d.c. wharf is quite an experience. this ceremony this morning will be capped with a fireworks display, a fireworks display on the d.c. wharf. how cool is that? so live music, restaurants, hotels, shops. it's a new wharf. it's not the wharf of my childhood. you can get live crabs and fish and they're fixing up that part, the fish market, but this is quite a site to see. many people have come

horrible damage from the ongoing wildfires in california. we just got this new video into the newsroom. this used to be a neighborhood in santa rosa. now as you can see home after home, block after block reduced to nothing but ash. nbc's gina kim reports on new warnings today for the residents there. >> despite nonstop efforts by 8,000 firefighters and more than 100 planes and helicopters, the number of fires burning in california grew to 22. >> make no mistake, this is a serious, critical, catastrophic event. >> reporter: 3500 homes and buildings have been destroyed or damaged with many evacuees wondering for a fourth day whether their properties still stand. >> i saw a fire truck come up the street. i waived, i said, hey, you guys, go. help me, man. i

>> reporter: yesterday fire officials called for new evacuations. officers going door to door to ensure residents get out before the fire gets in. >> the potential continues to exist for peril if folks don't get out from in front of these fires. it's very dynamic. these fires are changing by the minute. >> reporter: the worst of the fires are burning in california's famous wine country. at least five wineries have been destroyed. nearly a dozen more damaged. the physical and economic damage to the region is expected to be severe and lasting. >> it's going to cost a lot of money. the president declared disaster, major disaster. >> reporter: meanwhile, air quality in the northern half of the state is being called the worst in nearly 20 years. gina kim, nbc news, napa. here at home we're following a developing story in northeast d.c. a man was shot and killed this morning in the grass heart neighborhood. police say it happened around

this morning. it's the fourth homicide in d.c. in the past two days. we're working to find out who was killed and if investigators have a suspect we'll update you just as soon as we learn more. the university of maryland police are asking for your help to find whoever is responsible for recent hate incidents on college park campus. one of them happened in september and there were two more earlier this month. someone scrawled offensive drawings and language inside a men's bathroom stall in the dining hall. police are offering a $2,000 reward. now to an unusual start to the school day montgomery county. a swarm of bees attacked more than two dozen kids from flint orchard high school and sent a few of them to hospital. i retweeted news 4's amy cho who's been working this story in gaithersburg. first off, 5iamy, how are the ks doing? >> reporter: all of the kids are expected to be okay. they were gathere

and that bush over there with the crime scene tape is where the bee hive was. one student apparently kicked the hive and that's what set it off. 32 students stung in total. those students then walked across the street to quint orchard high over there and that's when school officials called 911. three students had to be taken to the hospital as a precaution and then 30 -- 32 students in all stung by those bes, the rest treated at the school chin be anything. when we first got here we were able to see the bees ourselves. quite the scary site. since then a property manager has sprayed the bush with bee spray. he appears to have killed most of the bees. several students described just how frightening that experience was. >> they told me someone kicked it and i'm like, why would you kick a bee hive? >> yeah, flew up my shorts and i was really scared because i felt somethin b

we'll have one more live update from the grand opening in just a few minutes. the boy scouts announced they will be welcoming girls into some programs, but as nbc's kristin dahlgren reports, not everyone is happy about it, notably the girl scouts. >> reporter: after more than 100 years, you no longer have to be a boy to be a boy scout. >> reason for the change is that our parents have asked for options to sir of their whole family. >> reporter: a unanimous decision starting next year girls can join cub scouts but will be in girl only dens. girl dens will start in 2019. >> they'll have an vanment track identical to boy scouting but maintains the opportunities for them to have leadership with their own girl gender. >> reporter: the move intensifying a growing feud with the girl scouts. in august the girl scouts president sent a letter
