a shooting on campus at virginia state university, the school on lockdown and police investigating reports of a suspicious package at this virginia civil war reenactment that was hit with threats earlier this week. as we said we have a lot to get to. we want to start with breaking news a offcampus shooting and assault near maryland. you were waiting for a update from police. have you talked to them since then? >> reporter: yes. we just got this information from police a few minutes ago. one college student shot and another assaulted both taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. this is the house where the shooting took place. this is in the 7500 block of rhode island avenue off the university of maryland campus. i ske

he told me he rents it to five male college students. police are trying to figure out whether the shooting happened inside or outside the house, they're trying to figure out what the motive was. they believe it was not a random incident. earlier the university of maryland police stated there were suspects on the loose seen heading toward the college park metro station. the police did not believe there is a threat to the public any longer and this does have a impact on traffic. the 7500 block of rhode island avenue is shut down. if you need to drive in this direction, take a alternate route. obviously this investigation is still ongoing. police are asking anybody with information to please give them a call. but again, two male college students, both in the hospital after that incident, one shot, another assaulted, both expected to be okay.

park for us. thank you. we've got a developing story out of peters burg virginia where there has been a shooting on the campus this happened around 8:30. the campus is on lock down. they are looking for a man with a white jersey with a blue number 23 on it. we don't know what led up to the shooting or the condition of the victim. as soon as we do we'll bring it to you here on the air and of course on the nbc washington app. breaking news a civil war battlefield had to be evacuated today after reports of a suspicious item. this happened at the cedar creek civil war battlefield in middletown which is under two hours from dc near i 81 and 66, police evacuated people to a nearby elementary school. threatening letter was sent
