6:16 am
this is a real big deal and we're hoping it will be a beg economic job. >> the city says there will be 1,000 jobs and they're enforcing the idea half of them will be d.c. residents. the big picture is the wharf is right in tandem with the southeast waterfront where the nats baseball park is. and all the way around to rfk stadium where the city has a $2500 million plan to do all of that over there, possibly bring the football team back if it works out and all the way up to kenilworth garden. the city has basically rediscovered its waterfront. i have to point out it took three years to build the buildings that are there now. there are more buildings to be built. we have to go back and thank three people. those three people led the

through development. the riverfront was basically nothing. >> got people like you to move. >> i moved out of the circle in 2007. not at the wharf. i can't afford it. but i'm near it. >> close enough. this is only one of three phases, scott, but one f the big concerns, of course, is travgs transportation, getting there. they've got water taxis, free shuttle, but there's still a concern that, you know, there's going to be a lot of gridlock down there. >> let me add another concern. every time we hear about it, what becomes of the affordable housing crisis we have? >> there's a shortage not only throughout our distract but the entire area, maryland and virginia included. every time something new and a jewel has
6:18 am
wonder, have we squeezed the affordable housing for the people who have children, the people who don't have vibrant six-figure incomes wrrks do they live? >> ily are two condos and two apartment complexes and there is set asides for people that are part of a lottery to get in. displacement in the city is a very serious issue. people are losing their and to live here because they can't afford it, let alone somebody coming and taking their house and turning it into three condos. that is an important erb, and the city spending about 100 to $150 million o year on affordable housing but as sco scottie is saying there's a lot. >> on the other side, people say, hey, i want a little piece

lot of development there, new housing and things. but the big zero over there is what's going to be redeveloping. >> years ago it was supposed to be done. >> walmart was going to agree to build a store there. it backed out. in which case i thought the city would cancel all of its stores. it didn't. they're looking for anchor stores to go there. >> national harbor has little competition now. >> the water taxi. you could ride around on a water taxi. i think it's $15 round trip. you can go from the wharf to georgetown to alexandria and national harbor. you don't have to do anything but sit on the boat. widget there. it's pretty cool. >> it is. the heavy hitters come out in the virginia governor's race. president trump has enforced el gillespie. the vice presidents have been

exciting candidate either. and so we will see the democrats are unified. the republicans are swhats torn apart by trump. trump did not do that well in virginia. >> his name did not come up a lot during the debate. >> ed gillespie has taken a role who only mentions trump's name if you twist his arm, and that's basically what ed gillespie has tried to do. we'll see how it plays out. people in northern virginia which is one of the most voeft-rich parts of the state, they know who trump vo: john adams' prescription for health care would be a disaster for virginia families. adams supports letting insurance companies deny coverage for pre-existing conditions. seniors would be charged thousands more. 685,000 virginians would lose their health care. and adams is against medicaid expansion - denying coverage to thousands of veterans, children and the disabled. john adams: higher costs, less coverage, hurting virginians.

a remarkable explorer and he should not be lost in in the sleeve of history over anyone else. >> what about changing it to indigenous people's day? >> i think it's something that would pass. many states have done this and many cities have done it, los angeles recently. it's saying, look, let's celebrate the birth of the nation that included the indigenous people who were here, not just the european explorers who came over and conquered the area and took it over. >> scott, you did an explosive i-team investigation this past week where you took a look at how teachers in the district can admit to crimes against students but not lose their licenses. >> that's only in the district of columbus. decades ago states put in place rules that if you admit misconduct with a sturjts especially sex

some rule-making they're working on. they're trying to perfect it to get it finalized. there's no timetable. but there's more. the district government performs differently than states do and they don't have the state. >> the council could certainly push them. i'm surprised the committee chair hasn't pushed this. he's been strong in making sure people know the responsibilities they have. teachers might be high on the list. >> it's an interesting issue. we're in 2017 tlanld is no end of the road as to when this will be solve sthood that's a very disturbing conclusion. >> we've got mayor elections coming up. we'll ask about that. >> thank you, gentlemen. that's "reporter's notebook." i'm pat lawson muse.
