we'll talk about that. >> 9:00 on the dot now. in to some developing news. you're taking look at a map where a fire broke out early this morning on 52nd street in northeast d.c. >> let's get strike to "news4's" derrick ward who's live at the scene request the latest. what's going on, derrick? >> reporter: well, good morning. this fire was brought under control rather quickly because this happened in a place where there weren't a lot of combustibles, not a lot of things to burn. this was an abandoning building. it was called in around 7:15 this morning. when the firefighters got there, they did indeed find a fire showing. it turns out there were two occupants of this building, one apartment above the other, but this building was otherwise abandoned. this according to neighbors and confirmed by the fire department. both people were taken o out of the build. they wer

refused further medical attention. there was a concern about fire spreading. fortunately that did not happen. it was brought under control quickly and the cause is under investigation. we're live in northeast d.c. derrick ward, "news4." back to you. >> thank you very much. meanwhile we're following a developing story that had a lot of parents and students on edge overnight. a student was shot. police say another male student was assault. this was the scene around 8:30 last night near the college park campus. police are searching for the suspects. we're told both students are expected to be okay. a lockdown at university of virginia was locked down. an isolated shooting happened on the campus around 8:30. one man was shot. he's expected to be okay. we'll bring you the very latest in our nbc washington app. meanwhile a civil war re-inactment will not happen today after a suspicious item was found on a

battlefield. the cedar creek battlefield had to be evacuated yesterday in middle town. it's part of the national park system roughly two hours from d.c. spectators and re-enactors were taking part when the item was found. virginia state police brought in the bomb squad unit and cleared the scene. police have still not said exactly what they found, but earlier this week we know a threatening letter was sent warning harm after the event. they say they're unable to put on the event today. >> the time right now, 9:03. breaking news this morning out of anne arundel county. new video showing video on ft. meade road where a car crashed into a popeyes wall. you can see right here the car facing out toward the parking lot. no word yet on whether there were any injuries. we're going to keep you updated as authorities continue to examine the scene in this area. and police in

high. yesterday, 77. that was a little out of range. we didn't clear the clouds quick enough and they're clearing once again today but i do believe it's going to be warmer mainly because we're going have the south wind. so once we get sunshine and it's going to happen from west to east, so it's going to be a while before the i-95 corridor gets cleared but we will see the temperatures shoot on up and i believe we'll be around the 80-degree mark today. right now we're in the mid-60s. we have not budged because of the stubborn cloudsings the drizzle, and the fog. as we head out, you're going to need a jacket. i do believe we can shed it by the afternoon. visibility is low but they're improving ever so slightly. visibilities were less than a mile at some point but now they're starting to clear. that's good news as i believe some of these clouds are starting to clear out in shenandoah valley and areas to the west. temperatures right now in the 60s and we'll continue to move those temperatures up into the low 80s. we do have rain but

going to see on "news4." >> reporter: today it's a >> reporter: tonight it's a songbird music house. years ago it was the showboat lounge and people like jimi hendrix would hang out here and he made rock and roll history right across the street. >> i'd consider that picture that you found in d.c. of him setting his guitar on fire part of the holy grail of lost artifacts. like i mentioned earlier, no one believed that it happened. the fact that we see that it happened changes everything, especially the year of 1967 for hendrix. >> reporter: bill bentley, author of "smithsonian rock and roll live and unseen," a compilation of photos taken by fans is talking about this picture, jimi hendrix holding this burning guitar above his head in august 1967 at the ambassador theater in washington, d.c. hendricks burning his g tar has long been a part of d.c. legend,

but until now, there's never been a picture of it 678 they opened in the summer and went out of business six months later. but during its existence, it was home to many of the top rock concerts in the 1960s. phil wood was a 16-year-old aspiring rock musician in 1967. he was in the front row for two of the shows including last night when hendrix burned his guitar. >> then he picks it up and hewhacks it on the stage. but a string broke as they're prone to do and it came flying. it hit me right in the chest. i reached down, picked it up, curled it up, and put it in my pocket. >> reporter: ryan fisher was also in the front row on that final night but he and others at the ambassador hat started their

very taz brought her kodiak instamatic camera and took these performing and this one when she met him backstage. >> i just said hi, he said hi, and i took a nice picture of him. >> reporter: she gave some of the pictures to friends and then she went off to college. >> i had kind of forgotten about one of them. >> reporter: but when she was approached about a 50th anniversary reunion for the ambassador, one of her friends reminded her she had taken a fourth picture, the picture of hendrix holding a flaming guitar over his head. >> i no longer had any prints but i knew i had negatives somewhere because i never threw away my negatives even though i've moved at least 50 times in these 50 years. >> reporter: so dr. virginia veer taz searched through her memories looking for that night in 1967. >> i didn't know how i was going to find this negative. i thought, this is impossible. >> reporter: but deep in a hall

closet in a with thousands of other negatives, she found the negative of that historic night of august 13th, 1967, when jimi hendrix lit his guitar on fire for only the third time known to rock historians and only the second time caught on film. this picture forgotten for 50 years was now found. >> i'll tell you. that's the way it went down. you can't make that stuff up. all together it makes it a real moment in rock and roll history that i think people will talk about forever. >> it's surreal actually thinking back on it today. >> it's burned in my memory. literally, my view -- i was probably dangerously close as far as my ears went, but it was kind of one of those moments frozen in time. >> i was just a spectator to something pretty special. >> jimi hendrix.
