today, the wind was whipping up. seemed harder than it actually wachlts. >> i would agree with you. wind-driven raindrops are more impactful than the usual easy falling. but nonetheless, the winds will be with us for the remainder of the morning. this promises way cooler weather that moves in during the day today. you will really notice the change. by the time we wake up tomorrow morning, temperatures will be about 15 degrees colder than this morning. there's the front itself bringing the rain chances our way. the front is still way back across western maryland. ahead of it, the gusty west to southwesterly breeze. the rain isn't all that heavy. rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rain. this rain on a monday morning commute always a little more impactful. temperaturewise, not chilly outside yet. still mostly in the 60s. these will be afternoon highs today as well as temperatures fall quickly

afternoon. as you plan out your day, blustery and showery weather. back to sunshine before this day is done. chris? >> thank you, chuck. we're also following breaking news in louisiana where an oil rig exploded. now, search and rescue teams are looking for a missing person. the rig caught fire last night on a lake west of new orleans. neighbors heard a noise so loud it chipped their homes. first responders rescued seven people. an 8th is unaccounted for. once it's safe, engineers will -- what it's going to take it to clean it up. crews in northern california are finally making progress in the battle against some of the worst wildfires the state has ever seen. at least 40 people have died, nearly 6,000 homes and businesses have been destroyed. thousands of acres burned. nbc's dan scheneman has the latest on this breaking news. >> reporter: large fires continue to burn

california. other smaller fires popped up. authorities say there is good news. >> they're not going down easy but we're getting them. we feel better about that. >> reporter: roughly 11,000 firefighters continue to battle the flames. 200,000 acres burned. 5700 structures destroyed. hundreds much people are unaccounted for and coroners are going door to door and sifting through ash. some communities are still under threat. in santa rosa, residents forced to leave returned to their homes but soon learned fires were closing in. >> at that point, a huge sea of police officers from all over the state basically came in with bull horns, mandatory evacuation. >> reporter: firefighters warn conditions can change in an instant. >> flames fan like a hurricane. every single structure in a couple of neighborhoods gone. >> reporter: the threat of fire may have eased but it's not over. dan scheneman, nbc news. here at home right

fbi and d.c. police are asking all of us to take a look at this girl's photo. she went missing saturday in southeast d.c. near martin luther king, jr. boulevard. she's 11 years old. 5'4", wearing a purple shirt and black pants. if you see her, tell police. she's so young and the bureau has extra resources. i shared this story on my facebook page. you can help by doing the same on the nbc washington facebook page. there is an older man who is missing from gaithersburg. young shik han believe he has the initial stages of dementia. he went missing around 5:30 sunday afternoon. he was last seen driving a dark red honda pilot with maryland tags 6cj 8753 around 9:00. his car was spotted near addison and ronald

heights. if you see him or the honda, call police. an elderly man in virginia is stunned that a dog was allowed to live after ripping off part of his ear. this is video of the dog at a shelter. larry marshall is 80 years old and says his neighbor's great dana tacked him in fredericksburg. the wound was so bad, marshall had to have reconstructive surgery. if that's not enough, it's the third time the graeat dane bit marshall. it was dangerous, not vicious. so it was allowed to live. >> without a doubt, i contend that the dog should be put down. >> now, if the dog goes home, it will have to wear a muzzle and the owner will have to post a sign saying the dog is da

he's working to strengthen the laws when it comes to dog bite cases. we did reach out and talk to the dog's owner. at the time no one was home. colin kaepernick filed a grievance against the nfl. he thinks team owners cluollude to keep him out of league. he kneeled during the national anthem to protest racial inequality and police brutality. that started a national conversation and other players have picked up on his protest. kaepernick became a free agent after he opted out of his nfl contract at the end of last season. his attorney says the grievance was only filed after trying other options with football executives. that interception saved the game after the redskins blew a

you think petting zoo, you probably picture animals more th than. it was musical instruments on display. this was at the strathmore music center. dozens of kids gave the instruments a whirl. the center hopes to get more kids involved in music. >> last year our granddaughter came and tried the violin and wanted to take lessons. she's successfully lefrng learning violin. it's a great way to get new musicians. >> in case you were wondering, they get cleaned, the mouthpieces after each kid played. for a lot of women battling breast cancer can feel like a pretty lonely experience. but as news 4's aimee cho tells us, there's local survivors teaming up so none of them feel alone. >> the women gathered in this house aren't reemted but they call their group a sisterhood. each
