>> that's right. parts of the campus were on lockdown today after two reports of an active shooter. police didn't find anything. police want know who called and why. >> the first call came at noon. the caller claimed there was a campus on northwest with a gun. >> one of the calls came to howard's college of medicine. the other went to d.c. police. this is a very busy time of year on campus. midterms are underway for students. the school is also celebrating its 150th anniversary and home coming week. >> that's right. and now the investigation shifts to finding the person or persons who made those threatening calls. >> news 4's kristin wright has been tweeting updates from howard all afternoon. kristin, what's it like right now on campus? >> reporter: well, you know, this brought students real anxiety and it was a major disruption. police gave the all-clear, but now the question remains, who made these frightening reports?

>> evacuate the building? >> reporter: a student watching from a window recording as people run out of the howard administration building. police evacuated it and three other buildings on campus. here police going into the adm in building, the a-building with gun drawn. police say they received several reports of an active shooter. they evacuated four buildings and went through each one looking for any sign of danger. students nervously caught in the middle. >> when the real police get involved that's when i know it's serious. they still aren't telling us anything so i don't know what's going on. i'm hoping nobody is hurt and trying to get back to living my regular life and back to my regular schedule. >> reporter: d.c. police got the first report of an active shooter and then campus police started getting similar reports. pat and leon, we should mention that this is an important week here at howard. it is

happens next. the judge's orders almost certain to be appealed by the federal government. for now, though, it means the trump administration cannot restrict travelers from six of the eight identified countries from entering the u.s.. the ban was set to bar certain travelers from syria, libya, iran, yemen, chatd, somalia, north korea and venezuela. it was supposed to take effect tomorrow morning but today's block lifts bans on all countries except north korea and venezuela. other courts are weighing challenges to president trump's policy including the u.s. district court in greenbelt, maryland. opponents say it is essentially a muslim ban but supporters say the policy is backed by research and is not discriminatory. at the live desk i'm scott macfarlane. >> thank you, scott. breaking news right now in northern maryland, four people are dead after a fiery crash in westminster. that is north of baltimore. police say two vehicles collided on route 31. one of the vehicles as you can see there caught fire and both of them flipped over and they

charred. several other people were also injured in this incident. we are keeping an eye on this scene and we'll bring you any updates as we get new information here. >> and breaking news right now, new developments in the murder of a bowie state university student. today the man accused of killing him was also charged with a hate crime. if you have our nbc washington app, you got the alert about this just a few minutes ago. sean urban ski was indicted over the summer in the murder of lieutenant richard collins iii. collins was visiting friends on the university of maryland campus last may when police say urban ski stabbed him to death. urban ski goes on trial in january. >> now to a story you'll see only on news 4, a crime with an unusual target netting tens of thousands of dollars in revenue. this afternoon we are learning about a guy who is out there stealing coin operated gas station vacuum cleaners. news 4's pat collins live in lanham, he's got more on this. pat, what's the story here? >> reporter: it's quite a

leon. first let me start by saying this is not an atm. this is a coin-operated car vacuum cleaner. you probably have one at your gas station. you don't think of this as a target for thieves, but one guy is using these things as his own personal piggy bank. come over here, i want to show you this. this is a special lock, steel lock. it comes from israel. $200, it's almost impenetrable. but this guy has managed to find a way around that. and there are thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars missing. sometimes he uses a grinder to cut through the special locks. sometimes he uses a drill to get to that cash box. and when that doesn't work, he sometimes yanks off the hose and uses his own

so, here's what we know. it's called the crack attack, krack. this vulnerability potentially impacts devices from android, apple and windows. hackers can reset your encryption kia loug them to access your devices. in order, though, to pull off this attack, the hacker arcually has to be within range of your wireless signal. so, here are four ways to protect yourself right now. so, make sure your smartphone and laptop are up to date with the latest software patches. if you're using a wireless router from your internet service provider check with the company from the latest updates. if you own your own router, check to make sure you've downloaded any patches, or you can use something called, this is new, i never heard about this. it's avp n. a virtual private network. some are free and will charge you a few dollars a month. the wi-fi industry, including major platform providers have already started deploying patches and according to the wi-fi alliance, which is a

150th home coming. residents of two alexandria apartment buildings are wondering if their threat could be harmed by an enormous gasoline spill. >> the huge underground leak happened last month at the liberty gas station on king street just off i-395. bureau chief julie carey joins us now with more on the emergency response that continues nearly a month later. julie. >> reporter: hi, leon and pat. you can see, easy to see, rather, that things are out of the ordinary here. look at this makeshift bridge. all these white pipes snaking through the property. it is all part of an emergency response to a big gasoline spill some 5600 gallons of gasoline leaked out of an underground storage tank at that liberty gas station over there. now, this was the scene last month when residents in the neighboring apartment buildings woke up to the strong smell of gasoline fumes. some so alarmed they called 911 and the fire dep

storage tank had failed, more than 5,000 gallons of gas pouring toward three high rises. it forced ee vak of a gym in one of them, lower levels of parking garage off limits in another. some residents complained of ongoing headaches, not feeling well, they wonder now whether there will be any lasting health impacts. >> we talked to some other residents and definitely there is a concern. there is fear that the fumes, you know, that can be long-term effects for health. definitely they're strong. i know i was reassured that, you know, they were not bad for you, but, you know, it's hard to believe because if you're not feeling good inhaling them, that has to cause some issues. >> reporter: now, an alexandria city spokesman said no hazard to the public has been found. the s d

11:00 tonight. here are the numbers around the d.c. metro area. manassas at 62 degrees. 59 in honey town, annapolis coming in at 57 as the chesapeake bay water temperature is starting to cool fairly quickly now. there is nothing as far as rain is concerned. we're not going to see any rain. all it is tonight is the cold air. 45 d.c., 35 manassas, 36 at cull pepper. you have to get below 38 degrees to get frost. i think we have that area wide tonight. even in prince george's county, even around the district, parts of the d.c. metro area are going to see temperatures into the mid 30s so frost advisory in effect in the blue, flereeze warning f shenandoah valley. how will it affect fall foliage? it could have a big effect, not one we like. amelia draper is outside with more on that. >> exactly. when we talk about fall colors, we want be sunny cool afternoons and crisp at night that don't have frost. like you heard from doug, a lot of the area is forecast to get

of rainfall in our area since the beginning of september. our rainfall deficit now stands at about 3 inches. we're not in a drought, but most of us are abnormally dry. that's another factor you don't want to see. while you want sunny cool afternoons, you need rain so trees can get a drink every now and then. frost is very bad for the fall colors. d.c. metro area on andrighetver the best from december. our lack of rain combined with the frost and forecast, take a look, here's where we are now, doug. most of the area with moderate color, back around the mountains, high or peak colors if you're looking for something to do, perfect weekend to take a trip. yellows and oranges are always in the leaves. the green goes away and reveals those colors. the reds and purples are a little more tricky. they are more dependent on the weather and also the type of tree and thanks to jan johnson for that beautiful fall foliage picture there. might be the

it's still the talk at dinner tables all over. the historic announcement letting girls take part in the boy scouts. >> that's right. one troop, though, in montgomery county has included girls for years and has news 4's jackie ben son learned, their scout leader says it's time they get recognized. >> color guard halt. >> reporter: if you think these young women are out of place at this meeting of boy scout troop 52 in chevy chase, maryland, you would be wrong. they belong to the troop's venture crew, venturing as it's called is coed, it's been part of boy scouting since the late '90s. >> they do everything the boys do.
