worker shot and killed himself inside the plant. you're looking at the plant located outside of detroit. according to our nbc affiliate there, police say the unidentified worker took a gun with him to resolve a work-related issue. police say all the other employees were evacuated, and they're fine. but you can imagine how stressful and emotional the morning has been for the concerned families of those workers. police first were calling this an active situation. again, they say one worker has shot himself. right now the ex-boyfriend of a murdered mother of three has pled guilty to three serious charges in the 2016 crime. derek lewis who we'll show you a picture here is accused of killing kristina fisher, and i believe we have video from the scene in leesburg where police say he argued with fisher and shot her. violating a protective order. under the p

this morning. they say it was a very successful dry run. national park service crews are putting the temporary levy in place piece by piece along 17 th street northwest. they put the levee walls in place once a year to make sure it's in good work ing order. >> i've always likened it to a connect 4 game. you have the vertical posts and drop in the 27 aluminum panels which make up the wall. >> the levee is meant to prevent damage from high water like in 2006. the 17th street closure is between the washington monument and the world war ii memorial. it's one of lowest areas in the district. >> once the rain starts to fall, that's not the time to make sure everything is

a developing story at this hour out of virginia. someone has set off a homemade bomb. this morning police and the fbi are trying to find the person who built the device. it's homecoming weekend at the college of william and mary, investigators found the bomb in a parking lot steps from the campus. to one was injured and police say there is no threat to anyone's safety right now. new details into the deadly rampage inside a maryland granite company. a witness says the shooting suspect gathered a

the faa says the tests show when a laptop's rechargeable battery overheats near an aerosol spray can inside a cargo hold, it can take out out the fire suppression system. it can lead to the loss of aircraft. >> i have concerns because we know that there are a number of lithium batteries that are going to spontaneously go into thermal runway and create a potential fire. >> the faa had 31,000 cases where batteries caught fire or smoldered. three cargo planes have been destroyed by fires attributed at least in part to lithium batteries. two of them were fatal. they say passengers should not be able to pack large electronic devices unless they have specific approval from the airline. >> the thing that makes lithium ion batteries useful is what

well, october is domestic violence awareness month. and there's a program helping victims. it's called safe haven and offers 24-7 help for victims of violence who are concerned about the safety of their pets. we have the rescue alliance to explain how the program works. thank you for being here. first, i had no idea a program like this even existed. can you explain a lit

pets? >> sure, this program exists because oftentimes people that find themselves in a domestic violent situation know there's help for themselves but often they realize there's no help for their pets. they have to make the hard decision of getting the help for themselves or leaving the pet behind. we're here to bridge that gap and provide that foster service for their pet so we can hold onto their pet while they get help for themselves and then we reunite them with their pet. it's usually a 30-day period. >> that's what i was going to ask. i wasn't sheer ure if you allown or victims of domestic violence to come in. it's a foser? >> we're not set up to provide the service where the women stay with the pet. we do have to find a foster home where we can board them in an off site kennel as well. >> in these types of sichtuatio with domestic violence and pets

do you ever see pets hurt? >> unfortunately, we've responded -- i'm the director of the law enforcement department. we have gone there where there's a pet that's been injured and we realize it's because of a domestic violence situation. we have seen pets be the victim as well. >> okay. it goes way beyond the couple alone? >> absolutely. it goes way beyond that, and many times victims are forced to stay in the situation because they know if they get out of that, then their pet will be left behind in a potentially volatile situation for them. so we try to make sure that we're here, that the victim can get the help they need, and not worry about their pet. so they're not staying in a bad situation for the welfare of the pet. >> you said this lasts for 30 days. what happens at the end of the 30 days if the situation is still bad? if the victim cannot take the animal back? >> what happens is we ask the person that owns the pet, the victim, we try to call them

label anybody as a victim. we try to call them clients. the client works with a domestic violence advocate so we're sure they're getting the services they need, whether it's transition house, employment, something they can go on with their lives and not be dependent on their abuser. in that situation we have them working with an advocate so there's always a communication. we make sure they're ready to receive their pet back. they usually transition to a new location, and we find out they may need another week or so. we provide that as well. >> i think the program is wonderful. i've never heard of it before. safe haven from the rue main rescue alliance. we have an adoptable today quick. this is cloud. >> two month old little boy. a little camera shy. >> and available at the humane rescue alliance for adoption. if you want to find a new family member, he's a little cli
