campaign manager on house arrest in virginia. new reaction tonight from the white house about his indictment. and a teenage victim of road rage followed home. he and his family beaten up. tonight his father relived those terrifying moments. good evening. first tonight, an unimaginable tragedy for two families. one young life cut short. the other forever changed. >> now we're hearing for the first time from the family of the boy who survived a fall fran i-66 overpass in vienna. he landed on 22-year-old marisa harris's suv, killing her instantly. police are treating the fall as a suicide attempt. news 4's jackie bensen asked the boy's family about that. jackie? >> reporter: well, i spoke tonight to a man who identified himself as an uncle of the 12-year-ol

he says the family isn't sure exactly what happened here. >> what happened? >> i don't know. i don't know what happened. >> reporter: the 12-year-old's uncle asked that we not show his face on camera because of the sensitivity of the situation. he described his nephew, who lived with him at one point, as a happy kid who enjoyed walking around his vienna, virginia neighborhood. the boy lives just around the corner from thorough middle school. >> he happy. so nobody. he said -- i told johnny, where are you going? i walk. okay, boy. i walk. okay, boy. the same for every day. >> reporter: the details of this weekend's incident are horrific. just after 4:00 p.m. saturday the 12-year-old plunged from the cedar lane bridge over i hoof 66 and landed on the roof of a car traveling below. the boy survived, but the impact the car's driver. melissa harris of olney, maryland. she's a graduate of towson university

degree in counseling at marymount university in maryland. police are are investigating the incident as an attempted suicide. the boy's uncle says he's not aware of why his nephew would kill himself. i spoke tonight to some of the 12-year-old's friends. i asked them was he being bullied, was there anyone who was threatening him, any reason why he'd be depressed? they said no, he was a nice kid and everybody liked him. live in vienna, jackie bensen, news 4. >> such a sad story. thank you, jackie. news 4 went looking for answers today about why it was so easy for the by to go over the side of that cedar lane overpass. we found out that when it was built in 1963 fences were not required to run all the way across it. today the only fencing on that bridge is over the metro tracks because it's required by federal railroad regulations. if it were built by today's standards, the fence would run the entire length of the roadway. the overpass will be replaced with a full fence as part of the

i-66 express lane project. now to late developments in the story that's been building since this time friday. >> the white house going on offense today in response to those first criminal charges in special counsel robert mueller's investigation into russian meddling in our election, arguing none of today's revelations point to collusion between russia and the president or his campaign. former trump campaign manager paul manafort and manafort aide rick gates now face a dozen charges each. another former campaign adviser has already entered a guilty plea. nbc's blaine alexander now with a 30-second recap of the charges against all three men. >> reporter: former campaign adviser george papadopoulos secretly pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to the fbi. the plea agreement said he was communicating with a kremlin-connected russian who promised dirt on hillary clinton, then lied about it all to

manafort and gates are accused of lobbying for pro-russian ukrainians and not paying taxes on tens of millions of dollars. they're facing 12 charges including conspiracy against the united states, conspiracy to launder money, and making false and misleading statements. the indictment makes no mention of president trump or russian meddling in the election. >> for more reaction to all of this and what's next for paul manafort and rick gates, let's turn to leon harris. he's at the live desk with the latest. leon? >> reporter: well, jim, we're learning that paul manafort will address the charges against him tomorrow. for now he and rick gates are on the house detention. a federal judge considers both of them flight risks because of their connections to foreign governments. now, manafort can only leave to meet with his lawyers, go to court, keep a doctor's appointment or go to worship. he has to report by phone every day. he also posted a $10 million bond. similar deal for gates. the judge said his bond had at $5 million. he has to report t

a couple interesting reactions to talk about now. the president's chief of staff addressed the indictments on fox news tonight. take a listen. >> all of the activities as i understand it that they were indicted for was long before they ever met donald trump or had any association with the campaign. but i think the reaction of the administration is let the legal justice system work, everyone's innocent till -- presumed innocent and we'll see where it goes. >> reporter: here's another reaction. at a book signing in illinois tonight hillary clinton did not respond to appeals for her take on the charges. instead, she pointed reporters there to go to her new book, saying, "i have a great chapter on russia in here." both manafort and gates are due back in federal court on thursday. at the live desk i'm leon harris. doreen, back to you. another piece of the russian election meddling story will continue to play out tomorrow. executives from facebook, twitter, and google will all be testifying before a senate committee on capitol hill. they will testify that an

estimated 126 million americans received russian-backed material on facebook during the 2016 campaign. and facebook says it was likely difficult or impossible for users to tell who was behind that stuff. one week from tomorrow virginia will pick its next governor. and tonight there's major pushback over a new tough attack ad against republican hopeful ed gillespie. watch this. >> run! the ad depicts minority children running from a pickup truck with a confederate flag and a gillespie bumper sticker. it ends with scenes from charlottesville and the suggestion that voters "reject hate." a pac called the latino victory fund is behind this spot. not the campaign of democratic hopeful ralph northam. >> gillespie promised voters in loudoun county tonight that he'll get virginia's economy back on track if h
