issues there. we want to go back to the breaking news in new york, and this poignant shot from the world trade center, the site of the worst terror attack on american soil. it is lit up in red, white and blue this morning just hours after yesterday's melee a few blocks away. that is where a man drove a truck on to a bike path killing eight people and as aaron mentioned, who is live there, that truck is still on the scene this morning as investigators continue to collect evidence. >> yeah. aaron, can you tell us the latest on what you're hearing about the investigation at this point? >> reporter: yeah, chris. i have to say that since you mentioned the world trade center, i can see it. we're right here in the footprint of the world trade center. you may be able to see the top of the building there from this camera shot. that red, white, blue light is off now. it was definitely on last night as a show of strength from new york city. this is very much an active crime scene.

and going this morning. want to give you first an idea of what exactly happened here yesterday afternoon and where this all happened. this unfolded in the shadow, as we said, of the world trade center 3:00 yesterday afternoon in the tribeca neighborhood. the suspect drove the rented truck on to a bike path on west street, the west side highway if you're familiar with this area near houston street. he collided with a school bus. witnesses say he jumped out of that rented truck and he shouted alla akbar or god is great. this is a photo of officers detaining that suspect after he was shot by an officer. eight people died, 11 people seriously hurt. law enforcement telling nbc news the man left a note inside that truck claiming that he was committing this attack for isis. new york's governor, andrew cuomo, says the attack appeared to be the work of a lone wolf, eun. at this point local

as well as the fbi and new york state police are investigating this still trying to get a motive. we know they spoke with the suspect last night or spoke to him. he didn't say anything back. he's still in serious condition in the hospital as well. >> aaron, we know that after he crashed into the people on the bike path he crashed into a school bus which could only be so terrifying for the parents who are wondering about their children. this is happening as school was letting out for the day. >> reporter: right. there are at least i know two schools in this area that should have been letting out right around 3:00 yesterday afternoon when this all happened. we know that that school bus had two children, two adults on it. all four of them were hurt, taken to the hospital. we know the injuries are serious, but authorities here do expect that everyone who was injured here will survive their injuries. >> when he got out with the two guns their inclination was to take all the kids that were coming out of is 289 and ps 89 andke

all go back inside and help them upstairs. >> reporter: now the parents say that those two dads that jumped into action and tried to help out, tried to protect those kids may very well have saved their lives. none of them knew where the suspect was headed at that point so they had to presume that they were in danger. so some stories of heroism absolutely coming out as we learn more about what happened here yesterday afternoon. eun, chris? >> terrible tragedy. that is the one bright side that we know, that people are willing to put themselves at risk. >> two dads running into that school. thank you so much, aaron. 5:06. more now on the suspect. he came to the u.s. legally in 2010. officials say he had been staying in new jersey where he allegedly rented the truck he used in yesterday's deadly attack. his permanent address is listed in tampa, florida. we were over the apartment complex as investigators interviewed his neighbors. most of them told our affiliate that he seems like a nice guy but thid

>> we only saw him early in the morning and then at night. he was here one day and the next day you're hearing that he did something in new york, something that you can't even major you can't believe it. >> we also learned the suspect was an uber driver for six months and made more than 1400 trips. investigators saisai pof didny have a big social media footprint. back to the soft targets. >> open, relatively unprotected areas where you get a lot of people congregating. news 4's justin finch is live on the national mall. >> reporter: that's right. soft targets are open air spaces that are easy to access but a bit more complicated to secure like the mall here where tourists and families come and gather from around the world every single day. we

mind. first, experts say to keep an eye out for cameras. everyone has one these days. watch where they are pointing, particularly at doors or secured areas. they say those can be some serious red flags. also, one of our many venues in this area. access, they say those can be suspicious questions as well. some signs are going to be a bit more obvious like pulling an alarm to see what the response might be, but others are a bit morphine tuned. you have to keep your eyes open and police want you to do that as well, especially now as they are stepping up their patrols. >> two things we can do, we can make operational moves to make sure people are as safe as they possibly can be. the other thing is to make people feel save. >> reporter: we can tell you police were out in full force

new york city mayor bill de blasio said this was a cowardly act of terror to test our spirit. i want to bring in aaron gilchrist live in new york. >> aaron, we know part of the city was brought to a stand still after the attack. it seems like other parts, halloween went on as planned. >> reporter: yeah, we're in the tribeca neighborhood here in new york city. this is a residential area. you're right, for a time it was brought to a stand still. just hours after those people were killed in tribeca, there still was a halloween party. floats, bands, thousands of spectators gathered. they added extra officers, heavy weapons teams and sand trucks as protective barriers along the parade route. this was about a mile away from where the incident happened from where we are right now.

the parade director said this is important and it was important to continue with halloween traditions. >> don't allow their deaths to have changed the destiny of all new yorkers. it's important. tonight we honor them. >> reporter: we expect to learn more at 11:00 when there is meeting. tracie potts is on capitol hill following that part of the story. >> reporter: the president of uzbekistan has sent a letter to president trump saying they are willing to help in the investigation. keep in mind that the 29-year-old suspect is an uzbek immigrant. they strongly condemn what's happened here. here's the important part. uzbekistan for its part is ready to use all the

justin finch will be live on the national mall with how the attack is impacting security here at home. over and over we see a series of deadly accidents. >> it's just a little over a month and police are handing outcry tagss. they're hashing out ways to boost safety. adam tuss is live there now. adam, what are police saying they're seeing there at this point? >> reporter: pretty incredible stuff, eun. we're talking about over 3100 citations since this crackdown started here on indian head highway at the beginning of september. this is a notorious road that has a notorious reputation, but the crackdown has netted some incredible things. take a look at what we can show you. this all started in september of this year and since that time there have been

traffic citations. don't forget that parts of indian head highway are an active construction zone. this is people coming through here when there are workers out here on the roads, and a lot of people are speeding in this area. one of the things that they actually found and one of the arrests that they made was a driver who was doing 115 miles an hour in a 55-mile-an-hour zoin. indian head highway has long stretches in between lights where you're able to pick up speed. 115 in a 55-mile-an-hour zone. police are getting real serious about cracking down on drivers who are not doing the right thing out here. we're also hearing that one of the drivers who was speeding had two small people in their car. one of them not in a car seat in the front seat. there are people not following the rules of the road. so the crackdown is expected to continue as you guys mentioned. it's going to -- there's going
