>> we have a team of reporters on the scene. aaron mcgilchrist is in manhattan. aaron? >> reporter: the suspect is under intense security, as you might imagine, where he wasn't saying much last night. apparently today he has been talking quite a bit, talking about -- bragging about the rampage that left eight people dead last night. this all happened, of course, on a protected bike path in the shadow of the new world trade center here along the west side highway where we have set up this evening. nearby, kids were coming out of school around 3:00, 4:00 yesterday afternoon. this attack committed, the suspect said, in the name of isis. let's go to erika gonzalez and what we've learned from the investigation. erika? >> several charges against sayfullo saipov were filed within the past hour. he faces one count for supporting a terrorist organization and another for

tonight, we are also hearing from the father of one of the victims. take a listen. >> he -- he -- had everything going for him. i don't know how i'm going to get through all of this. i really don't know how. >> this is jimmy drake, the father of darren drake. you'll hear more about the victims later on in the broadcast. investigators say that saipov planned the attack for weeks. he had no criminal background and was not on the fbi radar. he came into the u.s. from uzbekistan as part of a visa program. investigators are trying to find out if he had help planning the attack. a note left behind in his truck pledges

saipov has shown no remorse. he recently worked as an uber driver. meanwhile, we're going to send things back to aaron who is in new york for us. aaron? >> reporter: while police work to answer those questions, people here in new york city are doing their best to get back to normal. we're standing at one entry point along the west side highway where this incident happened yesterday. it's still closed off on one side of the highway. people were out here earlier trying to maneuver around the south end of the closed off area here on the west side highway, trying to get back to normal. this is an area where there are lots of offices and stores, a shopping center just to the side of me here. people looked a bit confused as they were talking about what ha happened here. we talked to a bike

friends celebrating the 50th anniversary of their high school graduation. this could have been a lot worse if not for a police officer who is being hailed as a hero. ryan nash ended the rampage by taking saipov down with a gunshot to the stomach. he spoke very briefly half an hour ago. >> although i feel like we were just doing our jobs like thousands of officers do every day, i understand the importance of yesterday's events and the role we played and i'm grateful for the recognition we have received. i want to thank my family and friends for their support and all of the responding officers who assisted me. >> the commissioner said he doesn't think that there's, quote, a more humble human being than ryan nash. the terror attack in new york raising concerns about security here at home and shining a light on just how difficult it is to protect soft targets. places like bike paths, open spaces, malls, movie theaters

southbound along west street here at murray and west in lower manhattan. charges have been filed against sayfullo saipov and that he has been able to get information about why and how he pulled off this attack that left eight people dead. they believe that he acted alone but that person that they are talking to as well and the woman that saipov has been married to. we have a timeline of how this assault happened. at 2:00 in the afternoon, the suspect rented the vehicle across the hudson river here presumably the county in which he lived. it was about 2:43 in the afternoon when he came off the george washington bridge into the northern end of manhattan. just after 3:00, he entered the ke

speed. at 3:08 the first 911 call came in and then he got out of the vehicle and was shot by a new york city police officer. jay gray is here with us in new york three blocks from where we're standing. what's the latest where you are? >> what i can tell you, federal crime scene investigators within the last ten minutes or so have left this area. they have moved on and out of the area. they have opened up things here as well. there are still some areas locked down as they continue to finish up their work here. and we know that this neighborhood is trying to get back to normal and several schools in the area including a high school and community

maryland with the holiday season approaching, here's this cautionary tale. >> reporter: police say these are two of the men who robbed a woman at gunpoint outside of the wheaton mall. the woman described as being in here 20s had just finished eating inside the food court here at wheaton mall. she noticed three men but she wasn't that suspicious of them so she and her friend left the mall and walked across the plaza to the garage. the parking garage is the fastest way to get to the metro station and that's when they noticed something was wrong. the men had put on ski masks. one of the men pointed a gun at the woman while another stole the victim's wallet. even though they were wearing ski masks when they robbed her, the woman was still able to identify them. >> because she was observant enough of the guys before they put

went into the tavern. meanwhile, the wall has been repaired but the tavern is not ready to open. tracee wilkins, news4. there are signs of hope for the maryland woman who was shot in the head during the las vegas massacre. tina frost is recovering at johns hopkins hospital in baltimore. the 27-year-old says she's out of the intensive care unit and in a private room now. she's learning to right and is using a whiteboard to communicate. she's also working on walking by herself. tina's father says the coming weeks will bring more therapy to work on movement, memory and speech. her family knows more surgeries are in tina's future. they admit they're nervous but say their daughter is growing stronger because of the staff at hopkins and from prayers for her supporters. >> now let's turn to the
