of the house before. flames destroyed it. >> when fire fighters got closer they found more than just damage. two bodies inside the home on foot street in seat pleasant just over the d.c. line. >> as investigators tried to identify the victims they are also trying to figure out how the fire started. a prince george's county bureau chief tracee wilkins is at the scene. tracee, what have you learned about this so far? >> reporter: we are told by fire investigators that this fire is so extreme that they can't even identify the sex of the victims until they have an autopsy. let alone figure out exactly who these people were. but it all happened inside of this house. you can see what's left is completely gutted now. the flames were so intense it melted the siding on the house next door. so, now they are trying to figure out exactly how these people got inside and why they were there. >> so, went to fix this house up and did what they were supposed to have done, they wouldn't have

>> reporter: people who live on foot street in seat pleasant say it was a matter of time. >> it was boarded up the last time three months later they were in here again. >> reporter: fire fighters put out the large fire this morning. inside were two bodies. the foreclosed home owned by bank of america according to tax records. it was supposed to be empty. >> there are houses around here vacant and homeless people sleep in them. >> reporter: the house was damaged next door when the house went up in flames. he says his concern is much greater. >> i don't agree in sleeping with houses but people need somewhere to sleep. i'm sad that this is the result of it. >> reporter: now again, prince george's county fire fighters are out here and they're going door to door and making sure that folks have their active smoke detectors working, giving them a new one if they don't. they just got finished working this part of the block. reporting live in seat pleasant, i'm tracee wilkins. back to you all in the studio. >> thank you, tracee, such a sad stor

of two deadly incidents today in frederick county. one person was killed and several injured in a multi car crash in fredericksburg. it shut down route 3 eastbound to gateway boulevard. all roads are open now. no word, though, on what caused that crash. >> and police have a suspect in custody right now after a man and a woman were found dead along along acacia court. they found the two victims lying in the street. the suspect was still nearby and was taken into custody. police believe they all knew each other. just in to our newsroom, president trump makes his pick to lead the federal reserve. jerome powell will rise from board member to board chair. the announcement happened a few minutes ago in the white house rose garden. if confirmed by the senate, powell would succeed janet yellen when her term ends in february. yellen is the first woman to lead the federal reserve. she'll also be the

second term after completing a first. >> former trump campaign chief paul manafort and his business associate rick gates are fighting home confinement. >> the two face charges ranging from conspiracy to money laundering in the russia probe. >> leon harris is at the live desk now. leon, the two men say they are not a flight risk, contrary to what the judge believes. >> yeah, that's their story and they're sticking to it, erika, and pat. the two men have multi-million dollar unsecured bonds and their lawyers say that that should be enough to make sure that they show up for their court appearances. manafort and gates were back in a d.c. court this afternoon. in a court filing to keep manafort confined to his home prosecutors say he provided different accounts of his assets and he has three different passports with three different numbers and phones registered in other people's names. in court today his lawyer said that's okay, it's all right for people to have more than one u.s. passport. as for gates, his lawyer

the court that his client has no prior criminal record. he's a devoted husband and father of four young children who depend on him financially. in the 12-count indictment, prosecutors are charging the two men with conspiracy against the united states, money laundering, failure to register as a foreign agent, and making false statements. these charges are the result of mueller's investigation into muddling with the 2016 election. and as part of that probe, former trump campaign advisor george papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contacts with russians. and sam clovis a former chief trump campaign official had contact with papadopoulos about the contact with russians. he withdrew from being the cheech scientist. there were questions about his qualifications for that post. at the live desk, leon harris, news4. erika, back to you. >> leon, thank you. >> uh-huh. >> people running everywhere and just complete chaos. today we are learning more about a deadly shooting at a

police arrested the man accused of opening fire. this morning just five miles away from the store in suburban denver, right now it is still not clear why he started to shoot. two men and a woman were killed before he took off. police say the shooting does not appear to be terror related. we are going to hear from some of the distraught people who witnessed the whole thing happen a little later in this broadcast. >> to the terror attack in new york now, a person of interest being questioned by the fbi has rebuked the plot calling it sad and, quote, not from our religion. the fbi questioned the man yesterday in connection with the attack, but he hasn't been arrested or detained. he was reportedly a friend of the main suspect who is still in the hospital after being shot. jay gray is in lower manhattan right now where investigators are still working to learn more about the suspect. jay? >> reporter: yeah, pat, they are. this area o

the bike path where the attack took place is open again at this point, resilient new yorkers getting back to their daily routine. as investigators dig deeper into the life of the man they say is responsible for the deadly attack here. at the core of the ongoing investigation, a cyber search, agents with the joint terrorism task force analyzing data from the cell phones and computer looking for any link to isis before the attack. >> we'll see as we go down the road if he acted alone or if he had some help. >> reporter: to this point, agents haven't found any communication between him and any terror group. they do know he downloaded thousands of isis propaganda videos and images including beheadings. a criminal complaint outlined his plan. telling investigators he wanted to target cyclists along the west side highway then continue his attack on the brooklyn bridge, choosing halloween in an effort to kill as many people

telling agents he felt good about what he had done. >> i believe this is an individual who should rot in prison for the rest of his life. >> reporter: online president trump has called for the death penalty. >> he had everything to -- >> reporter: no punishment, still the void felt by the families of the eight lost. two americans, a tourist from belgium, and five friends from argentina celebrating their 30th high school reunion seen in this video riding bikes just minutes before the attack. >> to the families and friends, we say we are going to bring anyone that was involved in that, the perpetrator, to justice. >> reporter: as the investigation continues. yeah, federal agents and police stressing this is just the beginning of their search for answers here. pat? >> jay gray. thank you, jay.

election day tuesday, just five days away now, and despite recent poll numbers, clif says he is not dropping out of the race for the governor. the libertarian candidate made the announcement in richmond. several polls taken this week show ralph northam and ed gillespie have at least a 40-point lead over hyra, and an important reminder, the last day for in-person absentee voting in virginia is this saturday, november 4th. mail-in ballots will be accepted until 7:00 p.m. on election day. the office of elections says it's become a popular alternative. so far, over 32,000 people have been or have voted absentee. back in 2013, it was just about 25,000 cast absentee votes. be sure to stay with news4 on election day next tuesday. we're going to have complete coverage of the virginia governor's race and other key races and bring you all the final results on-air and online. >> time to get

the sign says "it's okay to be white" a message meant to divide. it was posted at blair high school in montgomery county. fliers were found on doors all around the school early yesterday morning. >> news4's kristin wright is live with reaction from students and school leaders about this. kristin? >> reporter: the same signs are popping up in other cities. here at blair, a magnet school for math, science and communication art, the principal and students say they are not taking the bait. >> ten of them, ten around the building. >> reporter: he says he can see right through the so-called message behind signs someone

building saying, "it's okay to be white." >> i don't think anything is necessary wrong with saying it's okay to be white because it's definitely okay to be white. what i'm really concerned that maybe they were trying to build racial tension at the school. >> reporter: staff found the ten signs posted on exterior doors before school opened wednesday. whoever did it must have gotten the memo from a website calling on people to put up the fliers to get a reaction. but at a diverse school like blair here's all the reaction they're going to get. >> i don't think it's really going to affect us that much. probably because, again, we're such a diverse school. >> reporter: the principal also sent a letter home saying that attempts to divide the smart and inclusive community just won't be allowed. so, erika, the school is also looking at security footage. back to you. >> all righ

kristin wright, thank you. >> amtrak is gearing up to take you where you want to go for thanksgiving. it says it will be adding extra trains and more on-board capacity for its busiest travel week of the year. last year amtrak says it carried more than 750,000 customers around the nation during thanksgiving. the rail service says tickets sell out quickly so if you're planning to take the train, plan ahead and book the tickets early. >> hard to believe we are already into november and we are talking 70 plus, 75 plus degrees. >> i like it. i like it. you know, i like cooler weather, too, but let's keep it warm one or two more days. we're going to get that. we're going to get one more day. >> may go up and down? >> exactly, this is what we expect this time of year, up and down, little bit of roller coaster for sure. out earlier today, news4, chopper 4 was over, take a look at this. it's not chopper. i thought was chopper.

was under the trees, amazing, the pilots today. the pilots are amazing. look at the shots they were able to get here. this is inside the d.c. area. now, this was actually fairly close here in northwest. but we are seeing very high color around the d.c. area, but peak color just off to the west. and look at those leaves right there. normally they would be a brighter yellow. it's extremely dull. one reason, because we haven't seen a whole lot of rain. we've been dry. here it is, high color in the orange. in the red those are the areas around peaks. loudoun county, parts of frederick county, washington county, all of west virginia, and past peak in the mountains of west virginia. this is above 2,500 feet or so. that also includes parts of the blue ridge out there. so, fall foliage may be the last weekend that actually get some color. hasn't been the best color but we do have some color. you can see some color out there on our tower camera here. 76 degrees, winds out of the south and 12 miles per hour. plenty of sun.

that southerly wind. again, a very nice afternoon. 73 martinsburg, 69 hagerstown, 75 honeytown. 77 right now in the culpepper area. nothing on the radar. we are going to stay dry today. tomorrow, however, we are going to be tracking a system and one system came through yesterday. you can see the flow out of the southwest here today. but here's the next system coming our way. it's another cold front. that is going to be dropping down across our area. we could see an isolated shower tomorrow afternoon but not expecting much. temperatures nice a and warm across the region. 73 new york. charleston, roanoke, west virginia. we stay on the warm side during the day tomorrow and then we start to see the cold air move in. how about 78 for a high? you like 76, how about 78? partly cloudy, nice and warm. a shower late in the afternoon, rush tomorrow, lot of football games going on on friday. could be a couple showers for those. we'll have much more on that coming up at 4:45. amelia is taking a closer look at that

how is this happening time and time again? it's actually pretty easy for the suspects. they come to a car like this in a driveway, they take the opener and open the garage. you may say that's a little too easy. the sheriff says folks are leaving their cars unlocked sitting outside their homes. not only the cars are unlocked. let's go inside because this is what the suspects are doing, right? they're going inside and because a lot of folks close the garage door, they assume, okay, the door going into the house is secure because that's closed. so, they leave that unlocked. but then the folks, well, they become vulnerable. thieves can go right inside. that's what happened in sterling not too far from here, 3:00 this morning. let's take you there. this is bush wood court. you're look at video from this neighborhood. the victims in this case, a homeowner who was asleep woke up, heard the dogs barking and found a man upstairs in his home, holding onto a jar of coins. he decided to chase

down the stairs, out the house. the homeowner actually got injured because he tripped over a chair that the suspect kind of tipped into his path. now, the sheriff says that those homeowners, that couple left their door unlocked. >> i do the 9:00 p.m. routine, check your car before you go to bed. check your garage before you go to bed. check all the doors that enter your house before you go to bed so that you don't have to, you know, make it easy for somebody to break in and take your goods or possibly something worse. >> reporter: here's the advice from the sheriff. that garage door opener, the one we put on our visor, take it with you when you grab your keys, bring it into the house. make sure you lock your car as it sits outside or even in your garage. and of course at night check all the windows, check all the doors, make sure they, too, are secured. essentially, erika, the advice is don't make it so

crooks. >> david culver, great advice. i would be petrified if i saw somebody inside my house. thank you, david. >> president trump and other republican leaders have been promising a tax overhaul for months. today we're getting the first look at their plan and how it could affect your family. blayne alexander has been pouring over the details all day. what are you seeing there, blayne? >> reporter: well, pat, you're absolutely right. first, this is something that will likely affect every single person who is watching right now. now, as for what exactly it will mean for families and their finances, well, experts say that it's too early to tell just yet, but keep in mind that this plan will likely undergo a number of changes throughout this process if it is signed into law. it's the grand gop roll out. top house republicans pushing their new tax reform plan touted as helping the middle class. >> this is a very important and special moment for our nt

>> he wiwe will grow our econom delivering more jobs. >> 90% of americans will be able to fill out their taxes on a postcard. >> reporter: what exactly is in the plan? fewer tax brackets, higher standard deduction, and a new family credit. it would also cut the corporate tax rate from 35% down to 20, preserves 401(k) plans, but gets rid of the state tax deductions. so, what does this really mean for the middle class? experts say it depends. >> every one of these little tax breaks is going to change and so each family will have a different higher tax burden or lower tax burden depending on what they were paying before. >> reporter: president trump pushing his party to act before the holiday. >> we are working to give the american people a giant tax cut for christmas. we are giving them a big, beautiful christmas present. >> reporter: but some republicans worried about the short time line and adding an estimated $1.5 trillion to the

first let's start with friday night football, exciting games across the area. we have broad run at stone bridge and woo ton. isolated shower, but most of us are looking dry and cool as those games wrap up. but around kickoff, temperatures near 70 degrees. so, really nice for early november football. as we look to our saturday down at nats park, we have the d.c. brew fest going on. you do want to bring the rain jacket there, either for the early session or the later session. can't rule out some rain at both of those. you do want to be prepared. also kind of on the chilly side with temperatures only in the mid to upper 50s. and then of course on sunday we have the dell ray halloween parade that was postponed. finally getting underway this weekend and it is looking nice out there for the parade on your sunday. want to talk a little bit of cloud cover but it's mild for the fa raid. 72 as the parade is wrapping up. and, doug, you also have a few events this weekend, including on sunday morning, not looking too shabby out there sunday morning.

saturday first off, the kidney ball, i'll be hoefrting that saturday night. if you're going to be there, may need the umbrella for that. on sunday, that's the day we're hosting the breathe deep d.c. walk for longevity along the mall. i do this every single year, always get a big crowd down there. it's going to be a lot of fun again. it will be cool but not as cold as the last two years. 55 degrees at 9:00 a.m. 55 degrees at 11:00. 63 degrees by the time 1:00 rolls around. the walk actually starts around 10:00. registration is around 9:00. they told me this year i can get down there at 9:30 which is an hour later than last year. i'm happy, i get to sleep a little longer. take a look at the next ten days. shower chances remaining through wednesday, and getting a little on the chilly side as we make our way towards the end of the week and next weekend. >> that's a lot of 50s there. >> and you mentioned snow. we won't think about that. >> not yet. >> here's something to think about. you have children. >> yes, two. >> here's the question for you. what age do you think a child should get a cell phone?
