of two deadly incidents today in frederick county. one person was killed and several injured in a multi car crash in fredericksburg. it shut down route 3 eastbound to gateway boulevard. all roads are open now. no word, though, on what caused that crash. >> and police have a suspect in custody right now after a man and a woman were found dead along along acacia court. they found the two victims lying in the street. the suspect was still nearby and was taken into custody. police believe they all knew each other. just in to our newsroom, president trump makes his pick to lead the federal reserve. jerome powell will rise from board member to board chair. the announcement happened a few minutes ago in the white house rose garden. if confirmed by the senate, powell would succeed janet yellen when her term ends in february. yellen is the first woman to lead the federal reserve. she'll also be the

second term after completing a first. >> former trump campaign chief paul manafort and his business associate rick gates are fighting home confinement. >> the two face charges ranging from conspiracy to money laundering in the russia probe. >> leon harris is at the live desk now. leon, the two men say they are not a flight risk, contrary to what the judge believes. >> yeah, that's their story and they're sticking to it, erika, and pat. the two men have multi-million dollar unsecured bonds and their lawyers say that that should be enough to make sure that they show up for their court appearances. manafort and gates were back in a d.c. court this afternoon. in a court filing to keep manafort confined to his home prosecutors say he provided different accounts of his assets and he has three different passports with three different numbers and phones registered in other people's names. in court today his lawyer said that's okay, it's all right for people to have more than one u.s. passport. as for gates, his lawyer

the court that his client has no prior criminal record. he's a devoted husband and father of four young children who depend on him financially. in the 12-count indictment, prosecutors are charging the two men with conspiracy against the united states, money laundering, failure to register as a foreign agent, and making false statements. these charges are the result of mueller's investigation into muddling with the 2016 election. and as part of that probe, former trump campaign advisor george papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contacts with russians. and sam clovis a former chief trump campaign official had contact with papadopoulos about the contact with russians. he withdrew from being the cheech scientist. there were questions about his qualifications for that post. at the live desk, leon harris, news4. erika, back to you. >> leon, thank you. >> uh-huh. >> people running everywhere and just complete chaos. today we are learning more about a deadly shooting at a

police arrested the man accused of opening fire. this morning just five miles away from the store in suburban denver, right now it is still not clear why he started to shoot. two men and a woman were killed before he took off. police say the shooting does not appear to be terror related. we are going to hear from some of the distraught people who witnessed the whole thing happen a little later in this broadcast. >> to the terror attack in new york now, a person of interest being questioned by the fbi has rebuked the plot calling it sad and, quote, not from our religion. the fbi questioned the man yesterday in connection with the attack, but he hasn't been arrested or detained. he was reportedly a friend of the main suspect who is still in the hospital after being shot. jay gray is in lower manhattan right now where investigators are still working to learn more about the suspect. jay? >> reporter: yeah, pat, they are. this area o

election day tuesday, just five days away now, and despite recent poll numbers, clif says he is not dropping out of the race for the governor. the libertarian candidate made the announcement in richmond. several polls taken this week show ralph northam and ed gillespie have at least a 40-point lead over hyra, and an important reminder, the last day for in-person absentee voting in virginia is this saturday, november 4th. mail-in ballots will be accepted until 7:00 p.m. on election day. the office of elections says it's become a popular alternative. so far, over 32,000 people have been or have voted absentee. back in 2013, it was just about 25,000 cast absentee votes. be sure to stay with news4 on election day next tuesday. we're going to have complete coverage of the virginia governor's race and other key races and bring you all the final results on-air and online. >> time to get

how is this happening time and time again? it's actually pretty easy for the suspects. they come to a car like this in a driveway, they take the opener and open the garage. you may say that's a little too easy. the sheriff says folks are leaving their cars unlocked sitting outside their homes. not only the cars are unlocked. let's go inside because this is what the suspects are doing, right? they're going inside and because a lot of folks close the garage door, they assume, okay, the door going into the house is secure because that's closed. so, they leave that unlocked. but then the folks, well, they become vulnerable. thieves can go right inside. that's what happened in sterling not too far from here, 3:00 this morning. let's take you there. this is bush wood court. you're look at video from this neighborhood. the victims in this case, a homeowner who was asleep woke up, heard the dogs barking and found a man upstairs in his home, holding onto a jar of coins. he decided to chase

down the stairs, out the house. the homeowner actually got injured because he tripped over a chair that the suspect kind of tipped into his path. now, the sheriff says that those homeowners, that couple left their door unlocked. >> i do the 9:00 p.m. routine, check your car before you go to bed. check your garage before you go to bed. check all the doors that enter your house before you go to bed so that you don't have to, you know, make it easy for somebody to break in and take your goods or possibly something worse. >> reporter: here's the advice from the sheriff. that garage door opener, the one we put on our visor, take it with you when you grab your keys, bring it into the house. make sure you lock your car as it sits outside or even in your garage. and of course at night check all the windows, check all the doors, make sure they, too, are secured. essentially, erika, the advice is don't make it so

about early september. that's the kind of weather we've got out there across our region and it's just going to stay quite nice right on through the day tomorrow as well. now, no rain to talk about. so storm team 4 radar all dry. back to the west tracking this right here, look terrain coming through chicago. that's a cold front. that cold front could move our way, bring us an isolated shower during the day tomorrow. however, most of your day looks dry. best chance of showers would be late and only 30% chance. sunshine early then cloud cover, high of 78 on your friday. look at the temperature difference. the front, more of a back door cold front as high pressure moves to the north. 59 degrees, chance of showers if not rain on saturday night. that could be kind of nasty. 72 degrees on sunday. of course falling back as far as daylight savings is concerned. 74 degrees coming up with a chance of showers on monday as well. more next week. we'll get to that in a second. what about the next couple days? we have a lot of events going on. the person in the know is amelia draper back in the weather center. >> hey, doug, i'm going to whack you through events friday,

first let's start with friday night football, exciting games across the area. we have broad run at stone bridge and woo ton. isolated shower, but most of us are looking dry and cool as those games wrap up. but around kickoff, temperatures near 70 degrees. so, really nice for early november football. as we look to our saturday down at nats park, we have the d.c. brew fest going on. you do want to bring the rain jacket there, either for the early session or the later session. can't rule out some rain at both of those. you do want to be prepared. also kind of on the chilly side with temperatures only in the mid to upper 50s. and then of course on sunday we have the dell ray halloween parade that was postponed. finally getting underway this weekend and it is looking nice out there for the parade on your sunday. want to talk a little bit of cloud cover but it's mild for the fa raid. 72 as the parade is wrapping up. and, doug, you also have a few events this weekend, including on sunday morning, not looking too shabby out there sunday morning.

saturday first off, the kidney ball, i'll be hoefrting that saturday night. if you're going to be there, may need the umbrella for that. on sunday, that's the day we're hosting the breathe deep d.c. walk for longevity along the mall. i do this every single year, always get a big crowd down there. it's going to be a lot of fun again. it will be cool but not as cold as the last two years. 55 degrees at 9:00 a.m. 55 degrees at 11:00. 63 degrees by the time 1:00 rolls around. the walk actually starts around 10:00. registration is around 9:00. they told me this year i can get down there at 9:30 which is an hour later than last year. i'm happy, i get to sleep a little longer. take a look at the next ten days. shower chances remaining through wednesday, and getting a little on the chilly side as we make our way towards the end of the week and next weekend. >> that's a lot of 50s there. >> and you mentioned snow. we won't think about that. >> not yet. >> here's something to think about. you have children. >> yes, two. >> here's the question for you. what age do you think a child should get a cell phone?
