we're hearing from a man who witnessed a robbery that started it all. and two and a half years since the d.c. mansion murders. tonight a family housekeeper talks to news 4 about the strange events that led up to the murder. ush push news 4 at lefrn clok. a terrifying situation for any driver. someone shot at cars on the interstate while people were inside them. at the live desk. windows on four vehicles were shot out according to maryland state police. one viewer tweeted us this picture. she was the fifth, the window on her car was targeted as well. police have not yet confirmed that. all of this went down on the northbound lanes near shady grove road in rockville after 8:00 this evening. what you're seeing here is video from the traffic cam shot around that time. it shows the interstate in that area. as you can see, hard to see what's happening on the sides of the road.

there in the dark. now, several people were inside their cars when the shots rang out. fortunately, none of them were hurt. at this time it's a fluid situation. we're still trying to determine if the cars were moving or stopped at the time they were hit. we're working to learn whether there was gunfire or if it was a bb or pellet gun. the investigation continues as authorities are looking for more information on the shooter. doreen, jim, over to you. a police chase on the beltway. it shows several men wearing dark clothing and masks inside a check cashing business. >> the chase ended with one suspect dead, four in custody and traffic at a standstill for hours and hours. thousands were stuck in it this evening. we're learning more about the suspects in the case. i'm jim at lee. i'm doreen gentzler. >> let's go to

darcy. >> reporter: doreen, this is the check cashing store where a played out this afternoon. if you look inside, you can see the business is well-lit up but it's closed at this hour. we were able to speak to a man inside when the robber's burst through. he may have gotten away with more. but the cashiers refused. surveillance video shows the brazen robbery at this cash depot in wheaton. the armed and masked robbers jumped the counter and customers stayed down as they ransacked the store. he was there when it happened. he's wearing the white shirt. >> he put his gun close to my body. >> reporter: the way he tells it, the robbers may have gotten away with more, but a cashier refused to open another or

finally, she's calling the police. >> reporter: the robbers ran out and got away. but not for long. >> got a description of multiple masked subjects, armed. we also got a description of a vehicle, a white chevy van. >> reporter: police spotted the van and chased the driver on to the beltway much the van crashed. one of the suspects bailed out. he was struck and killed by a montgomery county police officer driving an unmarked car. police arrested four suspects right on the interstate. this is just one of the guns they say they found in the van. police say these guys could be linked to two other holdups last month. one a gas station and one a food truck. police released the composite sketches of two of the robbers. back out live, just to give you an idea of how frightening this was for employees, i spoke to a woman working here

counter. she had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance, she just wasn't feeling well. we're waiting for police to identify the man who died and also to identify the robbers who now are facing charges. doreen, back to you. darcy spencer in wheaton, thank you. in prince george's county right now, one person is dead and two others are hurt after a car slammed into a county bus on richie road. police say the car was driving northbound about 8:00 when for some reason it crossed the center line and hit the bus. the driver of the car was killed. a passenger in the car and the bus driver were both taken to the hospital. we're told they're going to be okay. the road is closed in both directions from ashwood drive to old richie road while police investigate. moving on to a big change in our weather, folks. coming after that beautiful friday we had. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is in the storm center. >> still pretty

12-year-old. >> the referral called to the district child abuse hotline said there were noises of a child screaming, banging and a belt coming from the northeast d.c. home monday night. the call led investigators to the house owned by d.c. police lieutenant david hutchinson and to a 12-year-old boy. according to court documents an emergency room doctor who examined the boy found bruising and swelling in both of his eyes, multiple areas of bruising and swelling on his face. bruising on both ears and injuries inside the child's mouth. the doctor also noted multiple areas of scarring on the boy's and, back and lower extremities. the documents note the boy initially claimed he was injured when the family dog jumped on him, causing him to fall down a flight of stairs. neighbors on the street not far from the university tell news 4 the boy was not often seen outside. court documents say hutchinson denied physly

he admitted to yelling at him because he was given a did he merit at school for playing with matches. >> the police department admits he's been a police officer for 27 years, most recently assig d assigned -- his police powers have been suspended. in northeast washington, jackie bensen, news 4. new at 11:00, a man could be charged with a hate crime. the attack happened in broad daylight yesterday afternoon. police say the victim was panhandling at wisconsin and m street when a 40-year-old yelled a racial slur at him. the victim is black, moore is white. police say that moore followed him into an alley and hit him with a metal object. moore is charged with a saumt. if you're in logan circle tonight, you'll notice a few signs popping up that say no. gotcha. about 30 residents are

protesting. the new restaurant bjerregaard en is designed to hold up 600 people. opponents wanted the kpas limited to 200 people. supporters say you can expect to see more restaurants and bars popping up across the city. most popular desire of d.c. residents is to live in sustainable, livable, walkable communities where these amenities are outside their door. the alcoholic beverage control board will decide whether to approve, deny or modify the application. any time between now and january 2nd. the district booming nightlife and bar scene could be the latest city to add a nightmare. new york, london and amsterdam already have them. d.c. council member brandon todd proposed a bill last month creating a new director of the office of nightlife. the director would act as

liaison between government and community leersd and business owners to make sure everybody reaps the benefit of the night skoon. police tell us a woman visiting from out of town was raped on a sidewalk. tonight they're looking for her attacker. investigators say the woman was confronted around 10:30 last night on south randolph street in the shirlgton area. it wasn't far from a metrobus station. the victim had just left a friend's apartment. she was loading items into her car when the amana proechd her from behind, pushed her down and sexually assaulted her. people we spoke to were shocked by the brazen attack. >> i think it's devastating, especially for the area. >> it's definitely really scary. >> disappointing. someone is taking advantage of a vulnerable moment. >> despite a massive manhunt, police couldn't find the attacker. if you have any

tonight, parents tell us they are not happy with the results of an audit of prince george's county schools. the report found hundreds of students graduated without meeting state requirements and undue pressure was put on teachers to graduate students. there was no evidence of systemwide fraud. >> i've never done that. my team has never done that. this report says that we've never done it. >> the independent audit comes after four school board members investigated allegations of grade tampering. two responded to today's report. what i heard today was a ceo and a board chair celebrating the fact that they were not directly tied but that we still graduated hundreds, if not over a thousand students in the past year alone who did not meet the state graduation requirements. that is troubling. prince george's county schools have to respond to the state by january with a plan to

to the murders. i spoke with nellie this week. she didn't want to go on camera but says amy wasn't herself. >> called me and said, oh, nellie, amy locked me out with the dog. i say why? she says oh, she went to get flowers for -- how did she lock her out with the dog. >> that wasn't the only sign that amy was under a lot of stress. amy sent her this e-mail in april of 2015 that we're seeing for the first time. nelly said she misplaced small things like phone numbers and e-mail addresses and was constantly changing schedules. even in this voice message that was left for her one week before the murder. hey nelly, it's amy, i am calling to see if i could get you and your crew i think is the best bet, maybe

ocean. that means we'll be cooler and we'll see a lot of cloud cover during the day tomorrow. a chance for rain too. let's time it out for you. starting to see clearing skies. by 8:00 in the morning, the clouds moving back in across the region. we'll be socked in during the afternoon hours. so around noon, we'll start to see the clouds move in. by 1:00, we're still dry. showers to the south. coming into the area around 4:00. especially in through northern virginia. in the district and most of maryland, you're dry through the 4:00 hour and you see the chance of rain come in. not a lot. not talking heavy rain. a good idea to keep the umbrella. i am going to be out there for the ball tomorrow night. make sure you have the umbrella if you're heading out this weekend. on your sunday, couple of showers early at 8:00 a.m. starting to see breaks in the clouds. that's really good news. temperatures start to go back in the mid to upper 60s. about 10 degrees warmer on
