. >> announcer: news4 at 6:00 begins with breaking news. >> once again, our country is in mourning after a mass shooting. this one at a place people gather to pray and where they usually feel safe. dozens of people dead after a church shooting in texas. witnesses desperately holding on to one another to find some sense of comfort tonight. a small texas community is in shock after a gunman opened fire inside a church. good evening, i'm erica gonzalez. we just learned that law enforcement officials have identified the shooter at 26-year-old devon patrick kelly of neighboring camal county. gunfire erupted inside first baptist church in sutherland springs, about 40 miles

at least 25 people, 25 are dead. including the gunman. multiple people have been injured. the sheriff is expected to hold a news conference at any moment. something we're keeping our eye on at news4. >> reporter: a peaceful morning of worship turned to tragedy. an armed man opened fire late this morning opened fire. carrie ma tulla was working at a gas station about 50 feet away. >> it was just rapid fire. and you can hear that there was impact and there was ricochet too. >> first responders raced to the scene. the wilson county sheriff says 25 were killed. the shooter is among the dead. sutherland springs is a small town just a few hundred people, not far from san antonio. >> real small community, you never think in the world that something

community could happen. it's sad. it's really sad. >> reporter: president trump tweeted, may god be with the people of sutherland springs, texas. the fbi and law enforcement are on the scene. i have monitoring the situation from japan. dan shenaman, nbc news. i'm darcy spencer at the live desk where we're getting new reaction from texas officials into the mass church shooting as we just mentioned the shooter has now been identified at 26-year-old devon patrick kelly of neighboring camal county. kelly is dead. we're waiting to find out who took him down and these are just heartbreaking details that are coming out of texas tonight. kelly opening fire in a church on a sunday morning, a day of worship. we're continuing to monitor a planned news conference there in texas. we're hoping to learn more about how this happened, who the victims were. we'll bring you any new

meantime, we now know at this point that a single gunman opened fire in the church in sutherland springs. we do know a 14-year-old girl, the pastor's daughter is among the two dozen dead, the pastor and his wife we're told were out of town at the time now they have to deal with the loss of their daughter and a large part of their small congregation. also the two candidates for governor in virginia are weighing in on twitter. the news out of texas are awful. he and his wife are praying for the victims. ralph northam is praying for the victims in a senseless act. >> the mayor of san antonio called in news4 msnbc to talk a how close that community is. >> it's a place where you wave to people as they drive by. this is just a sad day

it's another on the long list of growing list unfortunately of incidents that tell us we live in a different world than we did even 15 or 20 years ago. >> the mayor said that his city just had a briefing about responding to today's emergencies like today's shooting. we've been working the phones to get response from local municipalities and law enforcement agency. less than an hour ago the d.c. police department tweeted that it's monitoring the mass shooting and sent condolences to the victims, families and sutherland springs community alike. what it called another senseless act of violence. >> the #sutherlandsprings immediately started trending on social media as word began to spread about the shooting. i want to show you a few of the tweets. this is from texas governor greg abbott. our prayers are with all who are harmed by this evil act. our thanks to the law enforcement for their response. evil act something we're

police immediately. promising news for a local victim on that mass shooting last month in las vegas. tina frost whose from maryland was shot in the face that night. frost family spokesperson tells our nbc station in san diego that she is talking and walking again. the lifelong soccer player is also able to kick a soccer ball around. her family says there's still a long road ahead for them. frost doesn't fully understand what she's saying so she's going to be working with a neuro psychologist in the days to come. >> a maryland family has got to find someplace else to live after a devastating fire destroyed their home. look at these pictures here. montgomery county fire rescue tweeted these out from the scene last night. this home is along cabana court in germantown. the electrical fire was started by an outdoor flood light. d dot wants to know how bad do you want that prime parking spot. start approximating tomorrow, a

by tuesday it's looking mostly cloudy. we do have a disturbance just to our south that could impulse some showers into our area therefore we do have a chance for rain. let's take a look at our rain outlook. widespread showers expected through our monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. we do have a chance for showers. if it's not raining where you are it's definitely going to be mostly cloudy. while the rain chances are pretty uniform, temperatures are all over the place. tomorrow we're headed up to the low 70s thanks to a southerly wind. we'll see things cool down in the middle of the week, down into the fis50s tuesday and wednesdays. if you're heading out tonight, temperatures dropping to the upper 50s at most. the good news is you don't have to contend with any rain on the road. your monday commute's a different story. rain expected for te
