the day tomorrow. but that is nothing compared to the next cold front that moves in. we're going to talk much more about that, just how cold these numbers get. most of us, maybe even the city, will see the first freeze of the season that puts some of you in the 20s. >> all right, doug. we're going to get ready. new this afternoon, the man who turned a sacred place into a mass murder scene sent threatening text messages to his mother-in-law not too long before he shot and killed 26 people during sunday service. >> devin kelley's mother in lieu was a plem ber of that church but she was not inside at the time when he sprayed it with bullets. nbc's sara dulles is in sutherland springs this evening learning more about the motive and the victim. sara, what's the latest? >> reporter: good afternoon, pat and leon. of the 26 people killed, as many as 14 were children. heart breaking news in a grieving town. in what was supposed to be a sanctuary, shots fired.

>> in front of the church. in front of the church. >> reporter: during sunday services at first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas, 26 people were killed, between 12 to 14 were children. >> my husband actually went to the church to render aid. he's a strong man, but he turned around and came back. he just -- he said, i can't do it. >> reporter: officials say 26-year-old devin kelley dressed in black and wearing tactical gear opened fire outside, then inside the church. he was confronted by an armed citizen as he exited and fled. >> our texas hero flagged down another young man from sagene texas and jumped in his vehicle and they pursued the suspect. >> reporter: kelley called his dad during the chase according to law enforcement then it is believed he turned the gun on himself. inside his suv investigators found three guns. according to officials, kelley's mother-in-law attended the church although she wasn't present sunday.

situation going on within this family. >> reporter: overnight a vigil for those lost, including the pastor's 14-year-old daughter annabel pomeroy. >> we lost more than bell yesterday. one thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is the fact that bell was surrounded yesterday by her church family that she loves fiercely. >> reporter: the victims range in age from just 18 months to 77 years old. lives cut short in a place they felt safe, a small-town church on a sunday morning. and more than a dozen people remain hospitalized, ten in critical condition. meanwhile, vice-president mike pence has tweeted that he will visit the area on wednesday. pat? >> all right, sara dulles, thank you, sara. >> churches and places of worship all across our region have already taken security precautions of their own just in case a gunman enters their san

safe inside shaabout a mile awa. >> that's where we find news4's pat collins. pat, what is the story here? >> reporter: an incredible story, leon. we're on w street in northeast. this is where the stolen car was found. the motor still running, the baby still inside. the police call went like this. be on the look out for a black stolen nissan car. there's a baby in the back seat. scores of cops sprang into action. one of them, georgette a johnson. >> my heart skipped. my heart gets heavy, very heavy, and i'm like, okay, i've got to find this child because this could be my child. i mean, i have boys. i have children. so, i'm like, no, we've got to find this baby. >> reporter: when she saw that little baby boy in the back seat of that car, officer george

him a hug. soon he was back in his father's arms. >> i tried to talk to him. i was holding him and comforting him, gave him a little teddy bear and everything. i was happy that he was okay. >> reporter: 18th and monroe streets, northeast, around 10:40 this morning, police say a man comes into a business here to pick up a check. he parked his car down the street and around the corner. when he comes out of the business, his car is gone. his black nissan car with a 1-year-old baby boy in the back. about a mile from the site of the theft, two officers found that nissan car. the motor still running, the baby in the back. >> it was relief, knowing the child was safe. that was my biggest relief right there. >> reporter: and you went through virtually every car, one

>> yes, sir, yep. >> reporter: so, the police have the car and they have the baby. what they need now is the suspect. you know, there was a catch to this search for that stolen car that made it doubly difficult. i'll get into that coming up at 5:00. pat and leon, back to you. >> all right, thanks, pat. we'll talk to you in just a bit, then. president donald trump's former campaign manager -- chairman, wrarather, is not on house arrest just yet. paul manafort and his business associate rick gates a r50i678ing in court today. the pair is asking a federal judge to lift their home confinement. the judge we hear is actually leaning toward granting that request but says she needs more financial information from manafort. manafort and gates are charged as part of robert mueller's special counsel investigation. both pleading not guilty. >> in just under 14 hours, polls open in virginia in the governor's race. it is a race being watched for clues about the naal

political landscape that some see as a report card on president trump. several polls are out this afternoon. they all give ralph northam the lead over ed gillespie, although some are within the margin of error. >> but other recent polls show the race now tied. the real clear politics average has northam up by 3.3%. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey has been checking in with both parties and she joins us now from a voting registration office near leesburg. julie, what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, hey there. this voter registration office board of election is going to be a busy place tomorrow night. that's because loudoun county is going to be a key area to watch. it is a place where democrat ralph northam needs to do very well to win. a place where republican ed gillespie is hoping to reverse a trend of this area, shifting bluer and bluer. >> we want to encourage them to make a plan for voting tomorrow. >> reporter: now, the final campaign blitz in the hands of volunteers right now. this is a look at a

where democratic get out the vote effort in leesburg. one family's basement you can see transformed into a campaign war room of sorts. some 300 volunteers passing through in recent days to pickup material for door to door canvassing. over in arlington this afternoon, this was the scene as the republican national committee cleared out its offices and dispatched its young staffers to all important northern virginia. the rnc chairwoman giving them all a pep talk before they headed out to do their own door to door campaigning. hear now from a democratic volunteer and then the rnc chairwoman. >> lots of enthusiasm. people coming out that have never volunteered to work in a campaign before. lots of new, new canvassers, new people on phone banks. >> we're hoping that by knocking on doors and pushing the final day it will make a turnout difference and put ed over the edge. >> reporter: and the candidates themselves doing a final round of

why is that so helpful, too? >> so, it actually limits the amount of water that comes out of the faucet. it still allows enough water for a homeowner to use it whether it's a faucet in a sink, a shower for the bathroom, but it limits the water usage and therefore the hot water heater doesn't have to work as hard. >> and the home oowners are so appreciative of it. we interviewed the homeowner here, mrs. brooks, and she is so thankful to have this service as well. >> most of the seniors live in older homes, not new homes. our homes are older and, of course, they have wear and tear. and we need this service. >> so, so many things that we can do on our own that ms. brooks is having done as well and, you know, just simple things that cost under $50, but the savings is significant. around average, $275 a year. not bad. back to you guys. >> thanks, susan. i

my house is not ready. >> it's time. >> mentally i'm not ready. >> yeah -- >> got to get ready. >> you have to get ready. if you look outside we have some beautiful color out there right now. we are about peak as far as the fall foliage is concerned here. but the winter is definitely right on its doorstep. i'm talking about this weekend temperatures will be in the 20s for some of the areas in the suburbs. >> we're about to take a deep dive. >> we're going to take a deep dive for should you. out there today it's been quite nice, temperatures in the upper 60s, low 70s. here's the front that's going to change it. right now doesn't have a whole lot of rain associated with it. you see rain coming through parts of virginia now and starting to come in parts of maryland, too. here's what we're dealing with. we've got some shower activity. you see it in through parts of montgomery county, loudoun county really seeing that rain. and then back to the west in towards parts of ware ren count rappahannock county. you have enhanced rainfall in rappahannock county, front royal, look at the

leez work. this -- leesburg. this is moving from the east continuing through pools ville. if you live this ashburn, the south riding, dulles, you're going to get fairly wet here over the next half hour or so. all this moves into the d.c. metro area right around 5:00, 5:30. that's what we'll be tracking here for you. as we look outside right now, you can see the clouds starting to come in after we saw some sunshine earlier. 68 degrees, winds out of the south at 8 miles an hour. that's at the airport, but notice the rest of the area in the 70s. now, 74 manassas, 74 fredericksburg, 70 in honeytown. the flipsid3 of this where we've already seen some of the rain down to 63 degrees, right now in w winchester, the temperatures the next few days, guys, i don't see anything like this the next ten days in our forecast. we don't have any more 70s. we don't have much in the way of 60s coming in. 53 degrees tomorrow. with falling temperatures, by this time tomorrow afternoon we could be seeing rain with temperatures in the 40s. it may be

afternoon with afternoon rain likely. take a look at this rainfall. now, the rain from tonight moves out. by tomorrow morning we're on the dry side. we have cloud cover. watch what happens by noon. by noon we've got rain enveloping the entire area and this is going to be steady rain and it's going to be most of the day. half an inch rain possible during the day tomorrow. and look by 3:00, this is some fairly heavy rain coming through here tomorrow afternoon. you're going to need the umbrella and you're going to need the jacket if not the coats because this will be a very chilly rain still through 7:00 seeing that rainfall before finally starts to move out and we get into some shower activity during the evening on tuesday. but look at this ten-day forecast. first up the next four days, showers likely tomorrow, 53. let's say rain likely tomorrow. drizzle possible on wednesday, kind of a nasty wednesday. 49 degrees chilly, 53 degrees thursday, shower activity. we may get clearing late in the day. that's something we'll be watching. 46 on friday. like i said, no 70s. there are no more 60s in the forecast.

we are learning new information about what a group of armed suspects did moments after a brazen daytime robbery. >> this all ended with a chase and a crash on the beltway friday that tied up traffic for hours. the five suspects were in court today. news4's darcy spencer has been digging through the charging documents and she joins us live now from takoma park. darcy? >> reporter: hey there, leon. we are here at the check cashing store in takoma park. they allegedly came here. police think they were also going to hold up this store, but somehow they decided not to. but police were already here conducting under cover surveillance. they spotted that van, chase it had and that's what ended up leading to them being captured. let's start with showing you the mug shots of the suspects who are under arrest. there are five men charged in the robbery of that check cashing store in wheaton friday. surveillance video shows them jumping over the counter and taking over the store.

second location in that same van, police chased them onto the beltway. that's when the van crashed. the driver as we reported before, was hit by a police car and killed. now, police are contracting the under cover work with getting this robbery crew off the streets. >> they were able to be johnny on the spot when it comes to seeing these individuals going to their second location and marking them per the first robbery. so, this is an important case that takes these violent individuals off the street and we hope to prove our case in court when it comes time. >> reporter: again, they were in district court today in rockville. a judge denied bond for all of the suspects. now, if they are convicted of these crimes, they could face 65 years in prison. back to you. >> all right, darcy spencer in takoma park. thanks, darcy. >> a special honor for a d.c.

i have my thermostat pulled up on iphone. what you want to do is lower your thermostat one degree. right now i have it set to heat our home to 70 degrees as we to december, i'll move it down to 69. january, 68, and then eventually by the end of the winter months saving a lot of money just by lowering it one degree and your body really doesn't know the difference. daylight saving time, did come to an end this weekend so you should have checked the batteries in your co detectors and smoke detectors. if you didn't now is a good time. also make sure the flashlights have fresh batteries in them so you can be ready for those power outages. and you do want to check your fire extinguisher every month, but if you haven't done so lately, make sure that if it has a pressure gauge on it, that pressure gauge is in the right spot and it doesn't look damaged. that's going to be your second tip. your third tip, you want to have some anti-slip on hand. like some salt or if you want something that is a little more eco-friendly, you can do sand or cat litter. the dark colors of the sand ask cat litter will help to melt the snow and ice.
