history. democratic incumbent mark herring beat john adams 53 to 47% and it was an emotional win for a former tv news anchor who ran in memory of his girlfriend. chris hurst quit his job after his girlfriend allison parker was killed during a live broadcast. he tells nbc news politics was how he found purpose after her death. parker and her cameraman were shot and killed during a live report in southwestern virginia in august of 2015. hurst ran as a democrat. he campaigned hard on universal background checks for guns. he won virginia's 12th district. 4:30 now. one local race made history last night. virginia democrat dana ca roam has become the first transgender person to be elected in the united states. >> every person who is ever been singled out, whose ever ever been stigmatized, who is ever been the miss fit or the kid

investigating a deadly double shooting in northwest. this happened last night near 13th and rittenhouse street. unman died. another was injured as shots rang out in an alleyway. the surviving victim described it as a drive-by shooting. police are still looking for the red mustang that left the scene. vice president mike pence will travel to sutherland spring, texas to meet with the families there. 26 people died when devin kelley opened fire during a sunday church service. half the victims were service. pence and his wife will meet with federal investigators. officials say kelley targeted that church because his ex-wife and inlaws sometimes attended services there. the heads of the company affected by two of the biggest diverse security breaches are headed to capitol hill today. the current and former ceo of equifax are getting ready to face tough questions. a senate committee is holding a hearing looking into how they handled the breache

4:41 right now. washington may be close to erecting an monument honoring marion berry. the council gave preliminary approval yesterday to put up an eight foot bronze statue outside city hall. final approval is scheduled for the next council meeting. berry died in 2014 at the age of 78. a 91-year-old woman has spent the last 25 years in a hospital. >> and not because of an illness but to help veterans and yesterday she was presented with the president's voluntary service lifetime achievement award. mary allen started volunteering at the v.a. hospital back in 1992. she first showed up at the hospital after her husband who was a navy

we saw a surge of women running in the general assembly this year. >> last night election brought a number of historic firsts for female candidates mostly democrats. >> kathleen tran flips it to blue. her district represents parts of fairfax county. >> virginia is about 9% hispanics but has never had a latino dgt. elizabeth guzman won the 31st district in prince william and fauquier county. >> democrat hala ayala beat out a republican. democrat jennifer carol foy takes the second district. foy is a public defender and was one of the first black female graduates from the virginia military institute and she is a new mom as well to twins born earlier this fall

>> right. president trump has started what will be a high stakes visit to china. >> the president and first lady are having dinner right now with china's president xi jinping and his wife. news4 edward lawrence following all this before us from capitol hill. what's the goal of the trip? >> reporter: the goal is two fold. they want to get china on the same page with north korea. china is basically north korea's only friend and so the u.s. would like to see china get north korea to back off hostilities. also they want to get greater access to chinese markets for u.s. companies and ease some regulations that require u.s. companies to partner with chinese companies to do business there. president trump and the first lady are dining with china's president in the forbidden city. how important is the significance of that dinner? >> reporter: this is very important for both china and the u.s. donald trump becomes the first foreign leader to ever dine in the forbidden city in modern chinese history. they also saw an operaer

gathered evidence from that home. the neighbors say the couple had issues but those neighbors never saw this coming. >> police have been called over there quite a few times but we never gave it a second thought. >> detectives are not saying how blackwell died. investigators say a fire that killed two men with prince george's county was arson. the fire gutted this vacant home on foot street last thursday. the two homeless men inside died of smoke inhalation. detectives are working to find out who started that fire. the d.c. council introduced a proposal that could raise the district's sales tax to 6.5%. the higher tax would be used to help fund metro but can only go into effect if both maryland and virginia also raise their sales taxes by a penny. adam tuss is working for you with more on what this means for your bottom line and your future commutes. >> reporter: is that tax plan going to set up a regional

prince george's county school board. >> grade changing in order to boost the county's graduation rate. there is an argument over whistle-blowers who tipped off school board members. teachers and administrators who trusted him with what they knew led to the state investigating alleged grade changing. he says he won't betray them. >> we said that there were hundreds of students that didn't meet the requirements for graduation. we said that grades were changed without the knowledge or consent of teachers. all that is backed up by this report. >> now after the report was released, burrows and david murray received an e-mail from the chair board. the chair threatened to sanction them about whistle-blowers. governor larry hogan weighing in as well releasing a statement calling the letter concerning. a d.c. charter school is under investigation for possibly failing to report child suspected abuse. the i-team is breaking today.

scott macfarlane. >> reporter: d.c.'s attorney general office tells the us capital city public charter school handled the case of allen coleman. we learned the school fired him in 2015 days after learning he was suspected of sexually abusing a student from a prior school. they didn't hear about coleman until a year later when the victim came to them. coleman's pleaded guilty to child sex abuse, likely faces years in prison. he didn't comment to the news4 i-team. the charter school declined to answer our questions and declined to be interviewed and issued a statement instead. we're confident that we discharged our responsibilities prrl in this matter. we've cooperated with law enforcement in our phases of its investigation. in the year between coleman's firing and his arrest, he found a new teaching job in a different school district with some great
