undercover agents were able to yet again smuggle test weapons and explosives through airport checkpoints. tom costello is at reagan international. we've heard this story before. >> reporter: yes, savannah. good morning. we've been reporting for years how homeland security inspection teams try to smuggle through these weapons and often they are successful and it has happened again. just two weeks until the thanksgiving travel rush and this morning the tsa is on the defensive after undercover inspectors were able to smuggle components through checkpoints at multiple airports. the good news, they did a better job than in 2015 when they failed to detect 95% of the inspectors' weapons but the failure rate is unacceptably high. >> we found that briefing disturbing. >> reporter: n

fourth-degree misdemeanor assault. boucher, a retired anesthesiologist, is accused of attacking paul while mowing his lawn. boucher's lawyer says it's trivial. >> it's a personal agreement between these two gentlemen. >> reporter: neighbors say there's long been frustration over senator paul's unkempt yard. paul and boucher have lived next to each other for 17 years. >> there must be something else. you just don't think something that small could cause something this big. >> reporter: senator paul tweeting wednesday, "i appreciate all of the support from everyone. a medical update, final report indicates six broken ribs and new x rays show a build-up of fluid around the lungs. injuries more severe than initially thought which could lead to more serious charges. >> given the seriousness of the senator's injuries, it's vy

"that's how other world tracks you. it introduces you to sensations you'd never be able to feel in real life or because you lack the guts to do it for real and when you find out what's missing, it's almost impossible to let it go again". >> yeah. well, i use that literally. virtual reality is right around the corner. but i also use virtually reality as a metaphor for where we are now.

mother nature has wreaked havoc on the country. missy bell, good morning. i think there's a part inside all of us that even if you want to go on a vacation or a destination and enjoy yourself, you think, ouch, i don't know if it's a good idea to go through a place that went through a difficult time and to be enjoying life there. what's your answer to that? >> you know, if you're afraid to go to these destinations because you're worried that you may use their resources, water or generator power, tourism is the life blood for these areas, that people's livelihoods depend on it and tourism is a path to recovery. >> if you look at places and say, i could never go to those places, it's either underwater or on fire, all of those things, how do you know if the place is ready for tourists? >> make sure that the infrastructure is back in place. you want open airports, open ports, open roads and make sure the hospital is operational as well. >> we're going to go through some spots. we think of the caribbean and

what is going on there and affected. there were two hurricanes that blew through. which are okay? >> 25% of the caribbean were impacted. keep in mind how large that area is. out of the 700 islands, only seven were impacted. u.s. virgin islands, st. martin, they will take longer to recover. you have turks and caicos and puerto rico which sustained a great deal of damage but san juan itself is the epitome of recovery and for the traveler that wants to give back, that's a great opportunity for where you can help rebuild and then you have islands that didn't have any damage at all, jamaica, bahamas, dominican republic. >> you don't want to get lumped in there and say i can't go there because they need your tourism holiday.

>> there's less inventory, always >> let's go to the florida keys. i remember how devastated key west looked. >> all of florida has rebounded nicely. with the keys, the airports are opened, key west, key largo, the attractions are opened and it's the lower keys that really sustained the most damage so you may want to avoid that but right now there's some great seasonal rates to be had. whether when they hit their high season on december 26th remains to be seen. >> book soon? >> exactly. >> texas, houston, those areas got hit hard, too. >> houston is open for business, as is galveston but of the 700 hotels in the houston area, 98% weren't impacted at all. it's a great time to go to houston and come mid-december when they have availability and the rates go down, it's a perfect time to go visit. >> a lot of people were watching

the news and we've had so many of california were just burning and you wonder, napa valley. >> it was but actually napa and sonoma themselves were not that impacted. all of the wineries are opened now except for one. all of the hotels are open. it's a great time to go to napa because there's unprecedented availability and some of the world's best restaurants there. also, they are coming in to what's called cab better na season so you're going to see rates come down. 10 to 40% less than they normally are. many of the hotels are offering second, third, fourth nights free and airports are down 20% year over year. it's a perfect time to go and enjoy napa. >> when katrina hit new orleans, people didn't go back for years. they needed you. >> they do. >> thank you. more information, including how to start planning your next trip, at today.com/travel.
