degrees under increasing numbers of clouds. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. thank you, chuck. we're getting some startling new information about the former school aide serving time for sexually abusing students. the washington post reports that new allegations have come to light about the school's lack of over sight. deontay caraway is serving 100 years in prison for sexually abusing more than 20 children in prince gorges county. a staffer heard multiple complaints of caraway's disturbing behavior more than a year before he was arrested. the report cites a court filing that specifically issued his former principal michelle williams to have influence. she had no knowledge of abuse before february of last year and did not foster an environment to permit any abuse. we're following a developing story in northern california where a sheriff credits quick thinking ter

on tuesday afternoon a man went on a random shooting ram pain in rancho tehama. he tried to get inside a school, when it was over four people were dead. we'll explain how this all unfolded. >> very bad day for tehama county. >> reporter: the incident began around 8:00 a.m. local time when a gunman randomly opened fire at a residence. >> after the initial shooting he is reportedly took a vehicle and went on a shooting rampage throughout the community. >> reporter: some of those shots fired at a school where one child was hurt. police say the gunman then seemingly chose other additional targets at random killing four and wounding ten before he was confronted by two officers. >> the suspect engaged

officers. they returned fire. the suspect was killed at the scene. >> reporter: investigators say there is no known motive or connection to any of the victims. brian flint claims one of his neighbors was the shooter and his roommate was among the victims. >> the neighbor has been shooting a lot of bullets lately, hundreds of rounds, large magazines, and, you know, we just -- we made it aware that this guy has been crazy and he's been threatening us. >> reporter: a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns have been recovered by authorities. the incident remains under investigation. mark barger, nbc news. breaking news in zimbabwe where the military has taken control of the civilian government forcing the u.s. embassy to close its doors. this morning the embassy tweeted it sent staff home while american officials monitor the

situation. they've taken the president into custody. they say it's not a coup and only removed the president for his own safety and his family. the army has been stepped in to calm some of the political tensions there. days after president trump's visit, china is sending a special envoy to north korea. right now there are no details about the envoy's itinerary or meeting. the associated press reports the envoy is not directly connected to the efforts to end the nuclear program. president trump has called on china to use the influence to pressure north korea to lose the program. rose mcgowan turned herself in. she was in town for the women's march after president trump's inauguration, but something she left behind on the plane tested positive for narcotics. it's unclear why it

you're watching "news 4 today." this is traumatic video showing a british airways plane catching fire on a las vegas runway. in fact, if you look closely at the center of the screen, you can see flames on the plane. it happened two years ago but the ntsb released the video two days ago. a fire broke out during takeoff and caused huge plumes of black smoke. the emergency chutes deployed. 14 people were hurt. the faa says that fire was caused by a left engine

has struck again in florida. a homeless man walking to church is believed to be the fourth victim in tampa. police say the serial killer seems ton to be picking the victims at random. people cheered, waived signs and hugged each other as australia celebrated an historic vote legalizing same-sex marriage. more than 60% of people voted in favor of it over an eight-week postal survey on the issue. australia's prime minister said its government hopes to change the law before christmas. continuing with our re-inventing retail series. toy stories aren't get thissing the foot traffic they used to. online traffic has replaced children running through the aisles. this holiday season is a crucial one for retailers. susan hogan looks into how they plan to reinvent retail.

you're watching "news 4 today." the national park service is getting push back over a proposal to close athletic fields at the washington monument. it raised the cost at others. online petition already has gained over 6,000 signatures and now seven democrats from d.c., maryland, and virginia are getting involved. they argue the national mall should remain open to everyone for any activity. the national park service says sports games ruin the turf. parents and teachers say it's just too risky to send their kids to washington. they looked at the recent attacks in texas and manhattan and decided to cancel the eighth graders trip to washington from ohio. we're learning more about what's behind

kids from all around the country and the world visit washington, d.c., just about every day, but about 300 eighth graders from northridgeville city schools in ohio won't be making their way this year. that decision was made after several teachers who would chaperone the trip expressed concern that something like the new york city truck attack or the shooting at this texas church could happen here in washington. >> for the safety of our students and the teachers feeling that way, it's hard to say you have to take students to washington. >> reporter: dr. jim powell, the superintendent of schools for north ridgeville city schools spoke to news 4 by phone. he told us that he heard from parents and teachers on both sides but made the final decision after a man was arrested outside of the white house threatening to kill white police officers. >> before we made that decision, we had many parents say they
