with a semi-automatic rifle and tried to get into the classrooms but could not. >> this incident, as tragic and as bad as it is, could have been so much worse if it wasn't for the quick thinking and staff at our elementary school. >> the man shot into the building and hurt one student. in all four people died and ten were hurt. the shooter was shot and killed by police. 4:30 right now. some breaking news in the science world this morning. >> chris lawrence is at the live desk with the new break through that could help fight diseases. what's this about? >> guys, this is fascinating. for the first time ever scientists have tried editing a gene inside a man's body. it's a big deal. it could permanently change a person's dna to try to cure a disease. scientists did a procedure on a man who has hunter's syndrome. it's a genetic

causes enlarged organs. during the procedure the scientists cut open the dna, inserted a gene and stitched the dna back up all through an iv. this should essentially delete the disease from the man's system. doctors say it's going to take a few months to learn if that editing is successful. it's fascinating. >> chris, thank you. we're following some breaking news as well. the u.s. embassy in zimbabwe has closed after it appears the military in that country has taken control of the government. the embassy tweeted that it sent staff home and is monitoring the situation in the capital of harari. you're looking at live pictures from the city. they seized control of the state broadcasting station and announced it has the president in custody. now the military insist this is is not a coup and the president and his family were taken into custody for their own safety. the army says it's been forced to step in to calm political tensions. >

visit, china is sending a special envoy to north korea. right now there are no details about the envoy's itinerary or meetings. the associated press says they are not directly connected to china's efforts to convince north korea to end the nuclear weapons program. president trump has repeatedly called on china to use its influence to pressure the north to end the program. we're learning at least one alabama resident has received a robe bow call from someone posing as a washington post reporter. the caller is looking for women willing to make damaging remarks about senate candidate roy moore for cash. last night he made the first public appearance since the latest of five women came forward accusing him of pursuing them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. >> obviously i've made a few people mad. i'm the only one that can unite democrats and republicans because i seem to be opp

both. >> now moore spoke at the god save america conference at a church in alabama. he claimed republicans and democrats are working together to get him to drop out of the race. many republicans on capitol hill say they would rather have a democrat than him. retiring senator jeff flake said if he were in alabama he would, quote, run to the polling place to vote for the democrat. rose mcgowan is free on bond in virginia. the actress turned herself in yesterday on a month old arrest warrant for felony drug possession. she was in town for the women's march after president trump's inauguration. something she left behind on that flight tested positive for narcotics. now it's unclear why it took nearly nine months for the warrant to come to light, but it did just after mcgowan publicly accused film producer harvey weinstein of rape. 4:33 now. inova fairfax hospital is working to reschedule 100

here. we can show you what they're talking about. the best day to leave, thanksgiving at 6:00 in the morning. that will work. a lot of people are probably not traveling that day. the worst day to leave wednesday the day before thanksgiving at 3:00 p.m. the best day to come back, sunday early in the morning at 6:00. or the worst day to return, saturday at 4:00 in the afternoon where you could get stuck in some traffic. listen, on the airlines side of things, this is a little bit of a different story. something that we necessarily haven't heard over the previous years. every day you wait from now until thanksgiving to book, aaa is saying that airline faires ae going up by $10 a day. if you were to book three days from now, it would be an extra 30 bucks. that's something to consider when you're booking your holiday travel but, yeah, it's going to be a busy week coming up. we'll have it covered for you from the roads to the rails to the airlines. it's going to be fun getting

nevada. he was indicted for extorsion and wire tapping last year. dane told investigators his brakes failed and he was unable to stop before slamming into erin kaplan's station wagon. the crash happened last month on evergreen mills road. he's facing several charges including involuntary manslaughter. a massive multi-state manhunt for a man described as a violent psycho path has shifted to california. >> it comes as new details have emerged about his well-planned escape. please say randall psycho walked away from a hawaii mental health hospital. he got into a chartered plane headed towards san jose. he was rummaging through a backpack that he did not have when he left the hospital. they say cyto was allowed to rome the grounds but had to check in. >> it's not a custodial environment. it's not a prion

members of congress. >> all of it funded by you, the taxpayers. the congresswoman did not say which members of congress have been accused of sexual misconduct, but two female lawmakers said at least two sitting male lawmakers, one republican and one democrat, are currently under review. one of them accused of exposing himself to a female staffer. we learned yesterday that complaints on the hill require a 30-day cooling off period before women can file suit. >> the requirement to sign a nondisclosure agreement which is a muzzle on the victim. the victim has to stay in that office for three months and continue to be in a very uncomfortable situation. >> 1500 former hill staffers have signed a letter saying they want to see reform for what they say are, quote, inadequate sexual harassment policies in congress. new mandatory sex harassment training is expected in the senate and house in the comi

democrat joshua cole has filed a lawsuit over the ballot counting controversy in stafford county. stafford county's electoral board did not count 55 absentee ballots found at the post office the morning after the election. cole is suing. he has not said if he will demand a recount. they'll hold a press conference later this morning with cole's attorney about that suit. we have an update now in the debate over where to put medical marijuana dispensaries in prince gorges county. maryland is allowing 14 medical marijuana dispensaries in the county equaling two per legislative district. members near connect church voiced serious concerns with the county's strict zoning laws. those with preapproved dispensary licenses cannot find

kids will be in class until june 13th. they will still have time off for rosh hashanah and yom kippur. they will still have a spring break. fairfax county school board is considering a calendar that would require students to be back in class before labor day. it would have students return to class on august 28th and be in school until june 13th. the plan would provide students with a full week for spring break in april. they'll vote on the calendar next month. you can find both call lone ders in the nbc washington app. i'm chris lawrence here at the live desk with some breaking news. i just tweeted that nasa has scrubbed a launch of a new weather satellite for the second day in a row. here it is on the launch pad. it was an all go up until about ten minutes ago and then they suddenly detected some upper
