good morning everyone. i'm molette green. and i'm erika gonzalez. we begin with a shooting on prince george county line. >> now working multiple crime scenes. >> justin finch in capital heights where the victim was found. justin. >> reporter: we are told he was conscious when he was found. and we spoke to police just a short time ago, they tell us they are still gathering leads as to what happened here. first, a live look at the scene right now. i 295 here right off kenneth worth avenue, traffic is moving normally now on the edge of d.c. and prince george county but a different story when they had tt ramp closed off to eastern. this area i'm told was closed for hours. and closer to the highway what neighbors say was a silver and

police telling us they did find a man in a gray sweat shirt who had been shot. now i spoke to a neighbor who said he saw the investigation. he said it is troubling to have crime happening to close to home and especially so early in the morning. >> you know, this is a rough area for crime, you know. i can see it happening, but, you know, i wouldn't put nothing past, you know, nobody around here. but it was kind of early in the morning. >> reporter: and, again, police telling us there are multiple scenes they are looking at at this time. we can tell you 4200 block of that street that area was closed at several hours as police is looking. that stretch is now open. police telling us the victim in this case a man in the car, conscious and breathing when he was found,

trying to piece together what happened here and where exactly this morning that man was shot before he was in his car and on this ramp this morning. we are live here in northeast. i'm justin finch. back to you in the studio. >> justin finch. thank you. we are looking to learn what happened a deadly house fire on marshall hall road and brian's road earlier this morning. you can see it's destroyed. charles county say they arrived at the mobile home before 6:00 a.m. and it was fully engulfed in flames. a man was found dead in the home. we are getting some startling new information about the former school aide serving time for sexually abusing students. "washington post" reports that new allegations have come to light about the school's lack of oversight. deante karo way is serving time in prison

george county. they heard disturbing behavior a year before he was an arrested. that report says the court filing specifically accuses former principal michelle williams of allowing karo way to have influence at that school. williams attorney told the post she had no knowledge of abuse before february of last year. and did not foster an environment any abuse. >> this morning police in the district need help to track down a person of interest in a deadly double shooting. shooting happened back in july near sherman circle in northwest. police want you to take a look at this video they just released. but they do know the video is not from the scene of the sho shooting. if you have any information about the whereabouts of the person in this video you are asked to call police.

hearing from president trump after his 12-day trip abroad. he tweeted this morning our great country is respected again in asia. you will see the fruits of the long but successful trip for many years to come. end quote. the president is expectsed to make what he calls a major statement about his trip to asia as early as today. turning now to decision 2017 h democrat coal has filed a lawsuit in stafford county virginia over the count. thomas leads coal by 82 votes in the 28th district. but stanford electoral board did not count 55 absentee ballots the morning after the election. he is suing to have them counted. to demand a recount. switching gears to our weather this hump day wednesday. no rain out there right now. but that could all soon change a little later today.

quick thinking adults at a california school likely helped save lives. >> that's right. a man in the middle of what police call a random killing spree tried to get into classrooms, but couldn't because the school was on lock down. >> nbc steve paterson explains how it evolved and wa we are learning about this gunman. >> reporter: early tuesday morning, a gunman opened fire in seven different locations throughout the rancho tehama reserve killing four and injuring ten, including at least two children. gunman's family identified him as kevin neil. >> this guy was on a killing rampage up and down shooting at passer b

just before 8:00 p.m. on the gunman's own street. authorities say an earlier dispute between the suspect and a neighbor turned deadly. >> in january of this year, he was an arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon on that person. that person is a deceased victim today. >> reporter: officials say it appears he shot a second person before going on described as random killing spree. a woman and two kids were this in truck on the way to school when he fired shots through the door seriously hitting the woman and hitting the children. then headed to tehama elementary school crashing his vehicle through the locked gate before hiring dozens of shots from outside the building. 6 year old alexander was shot in the foot and chess. >> he's in first grade. and it's like why would somebody go for the kids. >> why would somebody go to the school and do

like what kind of a person does that, you know? >> reporter: police say quick decision to put the school on lock down likely saved many lives. after leaving the school, neil raur returned to the road annie vebtly killing a vehicle. while he was chasing another kpar and shooting at the driver, police rammed the shooter vehicle. 45 minutes after it started the gunman was dead, shot in a stand off with police. >> that was nbc steve paterson reporting. detectives say they found the stem i automatic and two handguns in the suspect's car. you have to check out the next video, you see the woman there, well she just couldn't wait for her order, and reached through the mcdonalds drive-through window for a drink, then you can see she actually climbed through the window. this happened in columbia maryland. the police say she stole not just food but cash. now they want to track her down. >> that's unbelievable.

bus driver knew there wasn't enough time to get the kids out. >> that's when we noticed smoke. i didn't think dwas that bad but it got worse. bus was definitely on fire so i told the kids to run. >> we have to exit the bus. come on, the bus is on fire. >> reporter: she refused to leave the bus until she knew every child was safe. >> is everybody safe? >> i'm not a hero. the babies are a hero, honestly. they listened and did what they were supposed to do. >> reporter: some good samaritans pulled the truck out before burst into flames. >> i'm happy we got off. i'm so happy. like i said the whole time i was thinking of the children, making sure they were okay. >> reporter: she says her job has already been the kids and that's why she's thankful and back driving the bus. >> i love my job and my kids. >> she can tell she definitely loves the job and kids.

this week we've been taking a closer look at the efforts to reinvent retail. toy stores aren't getting the foot traffic that they used to see. >> online shopping has replaced children running through the aisles. the holiday season is a crucial one for the store, especially those that rely on toy stores, right, and toy sales. consumer reporter susan hogan are looking at how they are trying to get you back in the door. >> reporter: well, get this, a recent survey showed amazon was the place to buy toys. they trumped toy "r" us, walmart and even target. so this year those so ares are fighting bam. after toys r us filed for bankruptcy they launched this app it's like a scavenger hunt and works inside the store. >> going to be more of an experience

avoid and the parents are struggling to address that issue. >> news4 joins us with a look at why the problem is growing. >> reporter: a newly released study supports what many people have suspected for years, more teens are dealing with depression. psychiatrists dr. joshua whiner is here to talk about the causes of this increase and what can be done. thanks for being here. how much more prevalent is teen depression than it was a decade ago? >> this looked at depression rates from 2005 to 2015 and the rates have gone up 50%. >> wow. >> so now 1 in 8 teenagers in this country is depressed. pretty significant number. >> really is. do we know what's causing this increase in depression rates? >> so we don't so i think we have pretty good ideas or i have my own suspensions. i think one of the driving forces here is social media. so if you look at like how much is like changed from 2005 to

2015 are now big portion of that has been social media. and teenagers they are so focused on friends and how they are perceived and trying to figure out their own identity. >> fear of missing out. >> fear of missing out. and i think social media can just really drive that home for people, particularly if they are already vulnerable to that. they are lacking in a little bit of self-confidence. imagine how hard it's got to be if you are seeing all your friends getting together and you are left out. that kind of stuff you might not have known about in the past so it wouldn't upset you. now it does. >> how do parents deal with this? what are ways to handle the situation to help your kids go through something like this? >> you know, it's just sometimes not a great answer to all these things, right. i think you just talk to them about how they need to try to rely on themselves for things. that kids can be mean sometimes. sometimes you are not going to get invited to things. you have to try to bolster your kid up as much as you can. you want to make sure you have a

your kid so that way you can have that conversation. because they might not feel comfortable talking to you about some of those things. but you know some of the stuff is just rough, you no he, not a whole lot you can do. >> being a teenager is rough these days. what other factors? what about diet? >> so i think a couple other things, sleep is factor, less sleep. and diet is a major factor as well. when we look at diet there is it a lot more processed food in today's diet. we also have nonfood that's been processed using modified foods where they put pesticides on things. and that pesticide can impact your gut health and there is all the data now coming up showing that the gut health and the mic micro organize gissms affect ho feel. i suspect overtime we'll see some of these things we are talking about here. >> we have a campaign changing minds

of mental health illness. does this mean teens are seeking more treatment? >> at least according to studies the answer is no on a country basis. now what i think, just my own experience, i think people around here are, because i think when you look at the d.c. metro area largely looking at educated population. and i think where people are more educated, the stigma for mental illness is lower, and people are more willing to seek help. and you know as i've mentioned before, i'll have kids who answer their cell phones when at the are in session with me, hold on, i have to call you back, i'm with my shrink or something like that. kind of funny but at the same time goes to show these kids aren't as ashamed as maybe they would have been 10, 15 years ago. but when you look at the country as a whole the answer is no they are not seeking more help. and this is scary because untreated depression, particularly for teens, carries a high risk of suicide. >> they need to seek the help. thanks so much as always. >> my pleasre

scientists have tried editing a gene inside a body. this is the big deal. because it can permanently change a person's dna to try and cure a disease. california scientists did the procedure on 44-year-old man who has hunter syndrome. the genetic disorder can cause enlarged internal organs, developmental delays, and abnormal bone size or shape. during the procedure the scientists cut open the dna, inserted a gene, and stitched the dna back up, all through an iv. the altered dna should essentially delete the disease from the man's system. doctors say it will take a few months to learn if successful, but if true this could be huge. >> it sounds pretty incredible. thank you. this year sex iist man alive has voices on the show. the voice blake shelton, hints all week about who would be named.
