one of their detectives fighting for his life. >> this callous coward with a gun in his hand shot a cop in the head tonight. and they're supposed to protect you, but tonight a news 4 consumer investigation exposes guardrails getting the blame for deadly crashes. just in tonight, a rash of shootings here in the district. four in the last four hours. and there may be as many as five victims. >> tonight we know one woman has died in what witnesses say was a hail of gunfire. she was found on a doorstep a few blocks from the maryland-d.c. line on just street in northeast. and that's where news 4's darcy spencer is right now with the latest. darcy? >> reporter: we're here in the 5200 block of just street in northeast washington. if you take a look across the street, this is where a witness tells me the victim was shot. this is the entrance of a small apartment building. the man says he was

he heard a number of shots. and when he came out, he found the woman who lives here on the ground. there's a bullet hole in the front door window into the apartment building. he says he's lived here for a short period of time, he had just gotten a new job, and he was just really saddened to come out here and find her on the ground like that. she was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. if you take a look up the street here, this was also part of this investigation, very active. there are a number of shell casings in the streets with markers there. so police are also investigating that piece of it. again, this witness telling me that he heard probably 20 shots fired in what he described as an alleyway behind this apartment building. again, one woman pronounced dead. police so far have not made any arrests. in northeast washington, darcy spencer, news 4. also breaking tonight in baltimore, a homicide detective shot in the head earlier this evening is in grave condition. the shooter still on the run.

a recent homicide. he saw a suspicious person at the scene, began talking to him, and the man shot him. officers in tactical gear have been searching homes looking for the gunman. >> this is a dangerous profession. this is a dangerous job. police officers know that at any given time they can confront someone who wants to do them harm, and that's exactly what happened tonight. >> the detective's wife and two children are at the hospital with him tonight. governor larry hogan just released a statement saying the gunman will be found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. new tonight, neighbors tell news 4 an elderly woman trapped inside her burning home this afternoon has died. her son and caregiver also critically injured. news 4's shomari stone is live for us lorraine drive in temple hills where some of those neighbors desperately tried to rescue this family. shomari? >> reporter: well, jim, we were standing outside reporting on

out and she started crying, saying that this woman died. they say this woman was a big part of this community. she would actually come outside sometimes in her wheelchair, wave, say hello. well, she died, as you mentioned. and her son right now according to sources is clinging to life. >> this is a neighborhood that cares about people. >> a temple hills neighborhood is hurting. celeste taylor tells me her well-known elderly friend died in a house fire. >> i'm saddened. this is such a tragedy for us. >> reporter: chopper 4 captured the smoke from the 5200 block of lorraine drive. celeste says her friend's son was her caregiver. he -- >> was a staple in our community. everyone here knew who he was. >> reporter: and everyone knew his mother. she became ill as she aged. >> she went down when she got sick. but he was a great caregiver. >> i definy

know, how's it going to affect our morning? >> yeah, we're watching that rain right now on storm team 4 radar coming through the area and you notice it's not a lot of rain. this little band of rain making its way through right now, up toward i-81, back into portions of loudoun county, parts of frederick can't youy. you see that. nothing through the d.c. area yet. saw a few sprinkles earlier, that's about it. back to the west seeing some of the heavy rain entering loudoun county, right around luktsville and lovett area, leesburg, middleway, cabletown down toward bluemont in toward parts of clark county. this will be out of here by early tomorrow morning. but what effect does it have on your thursday? and what about the weather behind it? that's when the cold stuff moves in. i'll show it to you coming up in my forecast. at the live desk, new reaction from senate candidate roy moore of alabama as two more women accuse him of sexual misconduct. they say that he harassed them at the mall where they worked. one of them tells the "washington post" that she was a

moore called her school to ask her out while she was in class when she wouldn't give him her number. moore is denying any wrongdoing. and tonight he tweeted a challenge to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell to "bring it on." mcconnell has already said he believes moore's accusers. but moore's campaign is fighting the accusations. today his lawyers attacked claims that beverly nelson made on monday. they demanded to examine the handwriting in a yearbook that she claims judge moore signed. >> release the yearbook so that we can determine is it genuine or is it a fraud. >> famed defense attorney gloria allred is representing miss nelson and in a statement tonight she says "judge moore's team can examine that yearbook if the candidate agrees to testify on the accusations under oath." and by the way, still no comment from the country's top republican, president trump. at the live desk i'm leon harris. jim, back to you. >> leon, thank you. tomorrow the house is expected to easily pass its version of the gop

but pushing the plan through the senate won't happen without a fight. wisconsin republican senator rob johnson said today he won't support it. the senate proposal includes a repeal of the affordable care act's insurance mandate. at least one gop senator isn't thrilled with that. and the party can only afford to lose two republican votes. >> i believe that if we start getting into health care issues with the individual mandate that we send a very mixed message. >> the house bill doesn't touch health care. anticipating the victory, president trump will pay a visit to capitol hill tomorrow. we also expect to hear tomorrow about a bipartisan deal on gun legislation. it's reportedly designed to close gaps in background checks for those looking to buy guns. it's narrow in scope but perhaps the best chance for congress to respond to recent mass shootings. these are the five senators

bill. four of them have had high-profile mass shootings in their state. senators chris murphy and richard blumenthal of connecticut have been fighting for gun legislation since 2012 when 26 people were killed in that massacre at the sandy hook elementary school. republican tim scott of south carolina also signed on, two years after nine people were killed at a church in charleston. and senator jon cornyn has been compelled to act after 26 people were killed at a church in texas, just ten days ago. new at 11:00 tonight, community members are suing the district over its handling of a library renovation. the capital view library here in southeast has been closed for months now. a group says the city failed to provide temporary library services the way it did for library renovations in other parts of the district. the group says the library is a pillar in the community where folks can have meetings, access the

new at 11:00 tonight, we've got a warning about potential dangers on the side of our roads. >> a controversial guardrail is being blamed for at least six deaths. and a news 4 consumer investigation has found hundreds of them are on roads in virginia and maryland. >> consumer reporter susan hogan is here now with what you need to know. >> reporter: according to three lawsuits filed against the manufacturer of the lindsay x-lite guardrail, instead of deflecting vehicles the guardrail in some cases is actually piercing them with deadly

steve eimers is a father on a mission. >> i'm fighting it so that no other family has to be here. >> reporter: it's been one year since his 17-year-old daughter hannah died. her car was pierced by a guardrail after she ran off the road. >> one guardrail at highway speeds, what it will do is horrific. >> reporter: eimers is now working tirelessly to get guardrails he calls dangerous off every road in the country. >> i can tell you that state d.o.t.s have raised significant concerns about how this product functions. >> reporter: hannah is one of four people killed in tennessee after hitting the ends of guardrails. according to lawsuits in those cases, each time the vehicle was speared by a linds lindsay x-lite end terminal. sayer gardner died last year on i-66 in fauquier

it pushes down section upon section, and if it's doing that it's absorbing energy and slowing the vehicle down, bleeding off energy so it slows -- so it's a controlled stop. you have a crash but you don't have a fatality. >> and that didn't do that here. >> no. >> reporter: and take a look at these photos from salene county, missouri. they show a truck that was literally skewered by an x-lite this past february. the state tells us it was an x-lite. the driver killed. in a statement to news 4, lindsay transportation solutions says "x-lite has successfully passed crash and safety tests in accordance with federal standards and criteria and remains eligible for federal transportation funding. there is no road safety equipment that can prevent injury every time a driver fails to stay on the road. but x-lite has reduced the number and severity of injuries sustained in automobile

accidents." while the x-lite remains on the federal highway administration's list of approved products, at least 11 states including virginia have decided to stop using it. the virginia department of transportation issued this memo last year, citing concerns over how the x-lite performed in crash tests. maryland says after reviewing all guardrail crashes on its roads over the past year it does not plan to pull the x-lite. >> right now we have no indication that this has been involved in any unusual or injuryious situation on maryland roads. >> but it has been involved in other fatalities. you are aware of that. in other states. >> yes. >> isn't that concerning enough? >> i would tell you that the maryland department of transportation and all of us at the state highway administration are always concerned about people's safety. so any insinuation or any possibility of us sitting on our hands and allowing safety to come second is just not true. >> reporter: in the meantime, steve eimers is calling on the national highway administration ot

its approved products list but to make sure every single one is removed from roads across the country. >> i know how this will end. it will end with a national recall. the only thing i don't know is when that will happen. >> reporter: now, starting next summer, all guardrail end terminals will have to meet new crash test standards to receive federal approval. the lindsay x life lite guardrail end terminals don't qualify so there will have to be new ones installed after june. however, there are thousands that remain on our roads right now, and those will stay in place. back to you. >> don't know if i'll look at a guardrail quite the same again. so doug, we've got? rain moving in overnight. >> we've got some rain moving in now. just a little. i think by the time you get up tonight if you're watching us and you turn us off right after sports is done you've got to wait till 11:35. by the time you wake up the rain is out of here. i want to

today of 53. watch how this moves through. by 2:00 a.m. it's already gone with the exception of southern maryland. by the time you wake up for the morning rush 7:00, 8:00 it's out of here. not just is it out of here, the cloud cover is just about out of here too. we're starting to see the clouds clear and we're starting to see the temperatures go up but then we see another change. the winds begin to shift and we go from rain to the west with snow back in our western zones. this is normal. this happens. they get cold air here and snow. we actually get warm air first and then we get some cooler air during the afternoon. winds are going to be rather gusty. winds could gust upwards of 20 or 30 miles an hour in the afternoon. cool start with possible wet roads. give yourself some extra time there. sunny and mild at noon. then the winds really kick up and temperatures fall late in the day down to about 51 by 5:00. by 8:00 or 9:00 we're talking wind chills in the 30s. it's going to fall fairly quickly tomorrow but first enjoy the 59. get to 59 around the noon, 1:00
