breaking news this morning. panic and devastation just outside pihiladelphia. a fire ripped through a senior living center. meagan fitzgerald is live with the latest. a scary situation. >> take a look at the flames that speak for itself. you can see the intensity dripping through this senior living facility in westchester. the fire forced residents out into the bitter cold. officials say more than 20 residents are in the hospital. this, of course, causing a lot of families to wake up in panic. we heard from fire officials just moments ago. >> the families, given the nature of the facility that we're involved with. we have a tremendous number of resources committed to this investigation and to the fire incident. >> we are expecting the next update at 6:00 a.m. you can always download our nbc washington app for updates. back to you.

a citywide manhunt is still under way in baltimore for the person who killed a police officer. detective shawn suiter was shot in the head while investigating a murder. he died yesterday surrounded by his wife and five children. there is now a $169,000 reward for information leading to the killer's arrest and conviction. we learned scammers may be trying to profit off of your compassion. fake go fund me accounts are asking for donations. they're popping up and this family says they're not behind any of those pages. now to a warning about a series of overnight burglaries that are happening in neighborhoods all over our community. someone is stealing garage door openers and breaking into homes. this happened four times in two days. police say they believe they're all connected. megan mcgrath is driving around

pulling it off. megan? >> reporter: guys, it's certainly a crime of opportunity. take a look at the live camera here. you can see that all of the homes in the community have garages. that is where the burglar is taking -- making the opportunity to get inside the home here. basically, he's going around the neighborhood in the early morning hours, going into unlocked cars, grabbing garage door openers and gaining access to the home. now, it's happened four times in one week here in fair oaks, also in the reston area. take a look at the map. the incidents are clustered together here. valley oaks drive, hunt manor court, edge mere circle. those are where they've happened. the garage doors allow easy access into homes. what he's doing, in the overnight hours, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, he is going into the cars, getting the garage door openers.

police track down them down -- an incident that happened on wednesday. a veteran teacher at lake braddock high school pulled off a student's hijab. the teacher said he was trying to remove a hoodie the student was wearing over the hijab. the student was angry and embarrassed. the principal said the teacher's actions were inappropriate and unacceptable. many students agree but don't believe the intentions were negative. >> a lot of teachers do that. pull your hat off or hood off. >> the reason was he was going for the hood not because she's muslim or because she was wearing a hijab. >> many see it as an attack on muslim women that can't be tolerated. the school apologized to the family and says the school values diversity. president trump is going after senator al franken after an l.a. radio host was

accused -- he was accused of groping her. this was before he was elected to the senate. the president mockingly called him al frankenstein and questioned whether franken did anything else to the woman. franken apologized. tweeden said she accepted it. several others are joining the colleagues and calling for an ethics investigation. tracie potts will have more on that coming up. now to a story only on news 4. metro is dealing with a situation that is disgusting and potentially dangerous. hair and human fibers are accumulating in metro tunnels at such high rates, that's a mess that could lead to electrical sparks and a fire. the largest labor union representing transit employees says that metro need to find a way to keep the areas around the insulators clean. apparently, metro has track bed cleaning since last

this is what you'll see. people sleeping outside for a good cause. this is an effort to draw attention to youth homelessness. >> justin finch took part in this overnight. we know it was cold outside last night. what an experience for you. >> reporter: it was an interesting experience. you're out here in the elements, unprotected. some just sleeping on boxes and blankets and sleeping bags just like that. imagine that with lots of wind going by, street traffic and other critters on the ground. it's really an insecure situation. sadly, that's how many youth in d.c. are sleeping each and every night. the goal here of sleepout d.c. 2017 is to eliminate that. executives from several firms, walmart, and others raised
