game trophy decision on hold until such time as i review all conservation facts. a temporary win for activists. >> having elephants and lions is a huge driver to the economy. there are millions and millions of people from all over the world who go to africa to see these animals alive. >> reporter: now, if the administration ends up easing restrictions, conservationists say it is a huge step backwards. >> we're essentially rolling out the red carpet for the next walter palmer. >> reporter: in 2015, minnesota dentist walter palmer killed cecil the lion in sim bazimbabw beloved lion being studied. walter said, if i had known this lion had a name and was important for its study, i wouldn't have taken it. he was forced to close his dental practice two months, his

vacation home vandalized. in 2016, the obama administration listed the lion as threatened and barred americans from bringing them back as trophies after africa lost 43% of its lions in the previous two decades. but the u.s. fish and wildlife service disagreed earlier on friday, saying the killing of trophy animals in zimbabwe will enhance the survival of the african elephant. arguing the country uses the money to step up conservation efforts. this morning, the big debate. will the dollars spentjestic an species, or is it an excuse to put a trohphy on the wall. questions swirling around roy moore amid growing allegations he had inappropriate contact with young women decades ago. on friday, moore's wife came to his defense along with dozens of other women who say they stand behind him. maya rodgu

with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. both sides are bracing for the final 25 days of this campaign, but it's questions about the past behavior of the republican nominee, roy moore, that continues to divide this state. in a little more than a week, at least nine women have made allegations against roy moore about inappropriate behavior stretching back decades. ranging from unwanted pursuing of teenagers to sexual assault. moore denies all claims of sexual misconduct. his campaign calls them, quote, politically motivated. >> we're in a battle. >> reporter: while he avoided the spotlight on friday, his wife, kayla, did not. speaking before her husband's supporters. >> even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation and now against my husband, he will not step down. >> reporter: on friday, alabama's republican governor said while she has

not believe his accusers, she still plans to vote for moore, to help republicans keep their majority in the u.s. senate. >> i will cast my ballot on december the 12th, and i do believe that the nominee of the party is the one i'll vote for. >> reporter: not all women are convinced. in moore's hometown, some scrutiny welcomed. >> i think it is an appropriate issue. i think the truth needs to be dug out. there's things that have been known here for years and years that have just gone unchecked. >> reporter: meanwhile, the white house is pushing back on claims that president trump stayed silent about the allegations against moore. >> he said that the allegations are true, he should step aside. he also weighed in when he supported the rnc's decision to withdraw resources from the state of alabama. >> reporter: moore's opponent in the alabama senate race, democrat doug jones, not mentioning his opponent by name but acknowledging the attention on this race. >> for all women, we are at a tipping point in this coun

up and speak out. i think that is a wonderful thing. >> reporter: for his part, democrat doug jones has benefitted from moore's troubles. he's raised $250,000 a day since news of the scandal broke. >> maya rodriguez, thank you. while president trump is keeping quiet about roy moore and the past sexual misconduct allegations against him personally, he is not he hsitaig to take on minnesota senator al franken, who apologized for his misdeeds in 2006. on friday, franken cancelled two upcoming appearances as he deals with the fallout. white house correspondent kelly o'donnell is following it all for us. good morning. >> good morning, sheinelle. it's easy to see how president trump has a lot riding on the outcome of the alabama senate race, which is why it is notable that he's relied on his spokesperson, not his twitter feed or his own words on camera, to comment about roy moore. that has stood out. however, the president has

to criticize democrat al franken, who has been a frequent trump critic. out of sight. senator al franken cancelled book tour appearances for sunday and monday. fallout after his apology for making an unwanted sexual advance towards leeann tweeden, who appeared on stage with him at a 2006 show for troops. out of bounds. the white house says past complaints of sexual misconduct made by several women against president trump are not at issue now. >> senator franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn't. there is a clear distinction. >> reporter: defending franken. women staffers who together released a letter saying, he treated us with the utmost respect. lawmakers find their own reactions are under fire. senator kiersten gillgillibrando said president clinton's sexual misconduct should have led to his resignation pushed

against clinton allies who called her a hypocrite for accepting the clinton's help. >> bill clinton did important things for this country, but my point is about this conversation we are having today and that we need to have the highest standards for elected leaders. >> reporter: the harassment controversies prompted a surprising strategy in ohio. in a facebook statement quoted by the "washington post," a democrat hoping to run for governor referred to the latest news as a national feeding frenzy about sexual indiscretions. bill o'neil, a state supreme court justice, overshared. in the last 50 years, i was sexually intimate with approximately 50 very attractive females, including a gorgeous blonde and drop dead gorgeous redhead. his comments brought bipartisan condemnation. for senator franken, he's not been seen publicly since all of this blew up. he sent a personal handwritten

accuser, and accepted his apology. franken has time to lay low because the senate is ongiving due back for over a week. jared kushner is coming under fire for failing to disclose what lawmakers call a russian backdoor overture and dinner invite involving a russian banker, accused of having links to organized crime, as well as vladimir putin. this as the man who set up the meeting between donald trump jr. and russian officials last year says he is now ready to talk to special prosecutor mueller. our national security reporter for nbc news, thanks for coming in this morning. >> morning. >> the senate judiciary committee says kushner's legal team has not turned over all of the documents it requested. among the documents, documents concerning a russian back door overture and the dinner it

overturesome. >> this is an example after another russian with high-level connections around the trump campaign. accused by spanish prosecutors of having russian organized crime connections, something he denies, was trying to get a meeting with a senior trump-level official around a national rifle association conference. an e-mail chain made its way to kushner and kushner instructed people to pass on the meeting. his lawyer says, that is exculpato exculpatory. they didn't turn the documents over to investigators. secondly, this man did get a high-level trump meeting with donald trump jr. according to him, this he had dinner with him on the sidelines of the nra conference. trump remembers it a little differently. congressional investigators want to me more about the encounter. >> let's talk for a moment about the man who set up the infamous meeting between donald trump jr. and the russians. rob goldstone, british publicist, agreed to talk to mueller's team.

not a lot is known about the meeting in 2016. a couple things, one, why might goldstone be so important to the administration -- this investigation? two, should the administration be worried? >> goldstone is important because he is the guy that set up the meeting. he was the intermediary between the russian family of oligarchs and donald trump jr. he wrote the e-mails we've read that said the russian government is trying to help your dad. this russian lawyer has incriminating information on hillary clinton. we've seen those e-mails. robert mueller wants to know what else goldstone knows about how this meeting was set up, what was promised, what was delivered. he is an important witness in this investigation. >> ken in washington for us, thank you. other headlines this morning include an intense manhunt underway in northern florida this morning, a day after three inmates broke out of jail. they escaped through the ceiling in the jail's library. nbc's stephanie gosk is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, this morning, residents f

and they're on the lookout. more than 24 hours after the three inmates escaped from the county jail, the sheriff said they were likely unarmed but should still be considered dangerous. search teams are out in the florida panhandle, combing through heavily wooded areas. this video shot by local paper "the tallahassee democrat." multiple agencies are part of the effort. on foot and in the air. >> we're not going to rest until the guys are back behind bars. >> reporter: officials say there is indication they may be left the area but they are continuing to search locally. cooper, cot erman and martina are each charged with robbery, while kotterman is a registered sex offender who escaped prison before in 1989. all have long rap sheets and were awaiting court proceedings in the county jail. on friday, the sheriff's office says they escaped through a hole in the kreceiling of the law library.

covering and they were able to break through the covering and get up into the ceiling. once they got between the ceiling and the roof, they made their way to the nearest door they could find and dropped down, then made their way out the door. >> reporter: last seen wearing sweats and long johns. police closed school on friday and told the public to keep eyes open but do not approach them. >> girlfriend was shared to death. four kids. she wants to get a gun and stuff like that. >> i know our sheriff's department does a wonderful job and they'll get them. >> reporter: often the most challenging thing for escapees is figuring out what to do once they get out. no money or clothes. they need support. that's often when law enforcement can catch up to them. no doubt, people in the panhandle of florida are making sure they're doors are double bolted. back to you. >> absolutely. stephanie, thank you. some 24 hours after a five-alarm fire tore through a nursing home in pennsylvania, authorities say they are still trying to account for everyone

fire broke out. investigators are also trying to figure out what caused the massive blaze that forced 140 people to flee for their lives. nbc's kristen dahlgren reports from west chester, pennsylvania. >> reporter: as intense flames ripped through the senior living center, some residents trapped inside, in beds and wheelchairs, unable to escape the raging infer inferno. >> heavy black smoke. you couldn't see. >> reporter: nurse assistant e toni was on duty. >> i didn't think of me, running out abut getting them out first >> reporter: high winds spread the blaze. >> they need as many ems units to the scene as they can get. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters were joined by neighbors. >> a lot of us don't have anywhere to go tomorrow. their families are scared. it's sad. >> reporter: andrew and luke took an uber from their college 20 minutes aw.

in western pennsylvania for a suspect involved in the deadly shooting of a police officer. officer brian shaw tried to make a traffic stop when he was shot and killed during a foot pursuit. he had been with the new kensington police department less than a year. police uncovered a car involved but are looking for the suspect. a hunt for two suspects in gainesville, florida, after a gun battle erupted when police responded to a domestic call there. poet of the offi-- both of the e expected to be okay. ryan seacrest released a formal statement disputing a decade old misconduct allegation made by a former wardrobe stylist at e news. he says, quote, i dispute these reckless allegations and i plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result. i treat all my colleagues with kindness, dignity and understandi,

am. seacrest apologized if he ever made the women feel disrespected. he said throughout his career, the majority of his colleagues have been women, whom he respects, advocates for and he says he'll continue to support. seacrest says his track record will speak for itself. dylan dreyer, we have nasty weather while folks are trying to get a jump on holiday travel. >> it is the middle of the country that is going to see the trouble spots today. take a look at what we saw in colorado, where we did have some snow falling in parts of southeastern colorado with this storm system moving through. you can see kind of a car vision there, driving into the snow. there were some spinouts and accidents because it is that time of year. you have to get used to driving in the nasty weather again. not a lot of accumulation. still, it's a sign of what's to come. this storm system is moving through the midwest. you can see heavy rain is really the biggest factor with this storm system right

the heaviest of the rain is moving through iowa. just south of chicago. we're seeing heavier rain moving into northern ohio and parts of western pennsylvania. the wind is going to be a big factor the next day or so. 40 or 50-mile-per-hour gusts. wind advisories in effect. the area of low pressure will move east where it'll bring rain in the northeast sunday. behind it, winds are so strong, we'll see lake-effect snow kick in. upstate new york, syracuse, could see a foot of snow. if you're traveling that way, something to keep in mind. that's a look at the weather across the country. you here's a peek out your window. >> thank goodness we're not experiencing that around here. we are experiencing chilly temperatures. starting this morning in the upper 30s and low 40s at this point. to plan out the rest of the day, we are expecting rain showers. spotty rain showers, mainly north of the district. temperatures will be in the mid to upper 50s for daytime highs today. winds are going to increase throughout the afternoon and into the evening. nothing happening on the radar right now. again, a lot of this is going to stay north of i
