but we begin on this monday morning with breaking news overnight. charles manson is dead at the age of 83. the subject of repull shun, devotion and endless fascination. gaudy swartz has the latest on his infamous life. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. over the past week rumors were swirling that he was close to death and last night word that he died of natural causes under guard at a california hospital closing a chapter in the murderous cult. the man known for murder never ashamed of as many brutal acts of violence. >> there is no need to feel guilty. i've done nothing i'm ashared of. >> this morning dying at age of 83. his health began deteriorating in january and then he was serious ill and rushed to the hospital. his legacy soared in life and now death. >> i've kicked this

months pregnant was stabbed to death and four others massacred and then a prominent grocery store la bianca and the couple killed and mutilated. his followers staging protests. one cult member even tried to assassinate president gerald ford. >> if you had to put a picture of the devil, would you put it right on charlie's face. >> reporter: sentenced to death he should have died decades ago but he was spared when california abolished the death penalty and in 1984 you survived a gruesome assassination attempt. >> charles manson denied parole in california. >> reporter: over the years authorities denied man son parole dozens of times. >> any comment, mr. manson? >> i'm going back down in the hole. >> reporter: in 2013, he described himself in one of th

the trial occurred. what are your most vivid memories. >> my vivid memory is being in the newsroom and jack said there is a big murder up in the hills and five minutes later he said it was sharon tate and the next night the la biancas were killed and that is the beginning of the chaos. but in the context of 1969, we had 500,000 people in vietnam and richard nixon had a secret invasion of cambodia and the black panthers and give peace a chance by yoko ono and ted kennedy killed a young woman with him and it was utter chaos. and that is all 1968. so we are rocking and rolling. and the thing that i remember is that squeaky from sat vigil. i was in sacramento and gerald ford is on the robe line and there is chaos, guns, guns and i woke up and there she was. i was the only one who knew who

off to the side and everybody else -- i kept yelling, who are you, i waptd to be sure. she said it didn't go off. she damn near killed the president of the united states and secret service got his hand over it and saved him. >> and you had seen her at the man son trial. you talk about saturday morning in the newsroom and then it turns out it is charles manson and a bunch of young people who liked like high school kids. >> it did. but its with also a time when the haze of lsd and marijuana and hallucinogenics were all over california. later i find out robert mitchham had some kids down from the beach from my days down there and they knew about him because he was around at other things with his kind of craziness and they knew about him. but no one expected it to happen like this. but again you had the rise of ronald reagan and then the rise of the panthers. it was a chaotic time in america. >> could you explain a little

those rambling interviews, but he also fascinated people and i'm not sure yet why. >> i'm not sure why either. he was a truly evil, dark person. and i always believed he knew exactly what he was doing. he was playing with us in that way. he was getting back at the establishment for whatever it was. and the guys and the young men and women around them looked like they were going to the junior prom but they came from dysfunctional families in many instances. so as whacky as it is now, that was a really discome bob you'll ating time. >> tom brokaw. thank you. turning now to the growing controversy surrounding embattled alabama candidate roy moore. polls do show him losing ground. with the clock ticking, white house officials are weighing in on why the president is not campani

we have two reports and we start with gabe gutierrez in alabama. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is now 11 days since news of the scandal first broke in "the washington post." this courthouse behind me is where one of his accusers, leigh corfman said she met moore when she was just 14 years old. this race already had national implications and it has now become a flash point for a larger conversation about sexual misconduct in politics. this morning roy moore senate candidate is deeply dividing alabama. >> i think there are many people gravely concerned about his candidacy. >> reporter: three of the state's largest newspapers urging voters to reject more and it has become a referendum on whether we will accept this kind of behavior from these leaders says the editorial in all three. >> he will not step down. >> reporter: but his wife and supporters are sticking by hi.

i think at least he's trying to do the right thing. but like all -- he's probably had mistakes in his past. >> reporter: overnight tweeting the elitist in washington don't want christian conservatives so they are attempting to overthrow alabama. senator ivy said sending a republican to the congress is important. >> do you still plan to vote for roy moore? >> that is what i plan to do is vote for the republican nominee roy moore. >> reporter: moore has denied accusations from nine women ranging from inappropriate flirting to sexual assault. the most come from leigh corfman, in 1979 when she was just 14. corfman told "the washington post" moore took off her clothes and touched her. a former co-worker of corfman said she told him about the encounter years ago. >> she said she despised

that he tried things with her, tried to molest her and she wanted to confront him. she was afraid. and she didn't. >> should roy moore resign -- >> reporter: the president has ignored repeated questions about the scandal. aides have said he finds the allegations troubling but believes it is up to voters in alabama to decide for themselves. >> i think that is probably the most common sense way to look at it. he doesn't know who to believe. i think a lot of folks don't. >> reporter: it is now 22 days until the special election. roy moore has been ignoring doug jones in his tweets overnight he once again attacked leader mitch mcconnell, taking his fight directly to the establishment republicans. matt and savannah. >> thank you. and we'll have much more on this subject in our next half hour when moore's first accuser leigh corfman joins us. and in a war of words

lashing out at olden enemies a making new ones. kristen welker has that story. >> reporter: the president will start the week by meeting with the cabinet on the agenda everything from tax reform to the crisis in north korea. but over the weekend it wasn't policy he was focused on, but rather twitter battles. this morning president trump will try to put the folk -- focus on policy when he sits down with the cabinet. after staying out of sight over the weekend but not offline. engaging in a twitter feud with the father of one of the three ucla basketball players accused of shoplifting in china. it all started when lavar ball, the father of player li angelo ball who thanked the president for freeing him. >> i would like to thank president trump and the united states government for the help they provided as well. >> reporter: down played president trump's role in freeing his son duing an intervi

replying who, when asked, but adding what was he over there for? don't tell me nothing. everybody wants to make it seem like he helped me out. the president firing back. lavar ball, the father of li angelo is unaccepting of what i did for his son and shoplifting is no big deal. i should have left them in jail. democratic congressman adam schiff slamming the president tweeting, how could someone in such a big office be so small. the president also lashed out online sunday at arizona senator jeff flake who was caught on an open mic by a local tv station warning the republican party. >> become the party of roy moore and trump. we -- >> >> reporter: the president tweeting back. senator jeff flaky who is unelectable in the great state of arizona quit race, anemic poles and caught on mic saying bad things about your favorite president. he'll be i no on tax cuts

because his career is toast. flake who announced he isn't running in 2018 has yet to say where he stands on the gop tax proposal. all of it as the president revived his battle with perhaps his biggest rival, tweeting, cooked hillary clinton is the worst and biggest loser of all time. she just can't stop. which is so good for the republican party. hillary, get on with your life and give it another try in three years. clinton reacting at an event honoring his husband's presidential election. >> apparently my former opponent is obsessed with my speaking out. apparently there was another -- somebody told me there was a tweet today. honestly, between tweeting and golfing, how does he get anything done. >> reporter: congressional leaders are hoping the president will shift his focus back to tax reform today after the house passed its version of the bill on thursday. now over the weekend, white house officials said they are open toea

the sub as soon as possible. the u.s. navy now joining the intensifying search and rescue operation adding air support and sophisticated under water scanning equipment to the effort. a hunt hampered by difficult weather this rear admiral said. waves two stories high. growing tribute and fears that the submarine base in buenos aries. among the missing, hernan rodriguez, and his wife saying on facebook, she's heading to the base to wait for him. and another of the crew,elly anna crow seek, argentina's first female submarine officer, pope francis born in argentina paying for their safe return. the san juan was on route back to the base near buenos aries when in the middle of the gulf all communication was lost. the aging submarine was overhauled back in 2014 raising hopes over the weekend, seven brief satellite calls were received on sunday. but this morning th

we're back to embattled republican senate candidate roy moore and the allegations that nine women have now made against him. leigh corfman was the first woman to come forward alleging she was just 14 when the then 32-year-old moore and assistant district attorney sexual assaulted her. and she joined us for the first television interview. good morning. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. >> i can only imagine what the last few weeks have been like when after 40 years you came forward and told a story publicly that you had never told before publicly. >> right. >> how are you

i feel like a weight has been lifted. i've had huge support, which i can't say how important that has been and i've had a lot of people come out and had said that because of my courage they are able to do the same. >> i know that details are difficult. but for those who aren't familiar, can you tell us your interactions with roy moore? you said you were 14 years old, sitting in the courthouse with your mom. he walked up and introduced himself and then ultimately called you and asked you out for a date. >> well i wouldn't call it a date. i would say it was a meet. at 14 i was not dating. at 14 i was not able to make those kind of choices. i met him around the corner from my house. my mother did not know. and he took me to his home. after arriving at his home, on tec

with him, he basically laid out some blankets on the floor of his living room and proceeded to -- saeduce me and during the course of that he removed my clothing and left the room and came back in wearing his white underwear and he touched me over my clothing, what was left of it. and he tried to get me to touch him as well. and at that point i pulled back and said that i was not comfortable and i got dressed and he took me home. but i was a 14-year-old child trying to play in an adult world and he was 32 years old. >> what did you think in that moment? did you think, i was just molested or assaulted? or did you not really think about it in those terms? >> i don't know that i thought about t

because it wasn't part of my vocabulary. i've been reading harlequin row minneapoliss f -- romance and i was expected candle light and roses and what i got was very different. >> did you tell anyone at the time? >> um, right after it, i told two of my good friends. and then i told one other and they told me how bad of an idea this was and -- >> to be with an older man like that. >> right. and that we weren't prepared for that. when he called again i didn't go. i made an excuse. and i didn't go. >> how do you think that interaction affected your life? >> well, it took away a lot of the specialness of interactions

with men. it took some trust away. it allowed me to delve into things i wouldn't have otherwise. it took years for me to regain a sense of confidence in myself. and i felt guilty. i felt like i was the one that was to blame and, um, it was decaded before i was able to let that go. >> you speak of decades and of course it has been decades that you've held this secret. there will be people watching that say, why now? why not bring this up over the last few years? particularly when roy moore was arising star in alabama politics, ran for election, for the chief justice of the supreme court, and they say, it doesn't add up. why wait? how do you respond to that? >> well, it is very

really. i did tell people. my family knew. family friends knew. my friends knew. i spent a lot of time every time he came up railing against him and what he's done to me when i was 14 years old. my children were small. i was a single parent. and when you are in that situation, you do everything you can to protect your own. and i sat in the courtroom -- in the courthouse parking lot and thought, i'm going in, i'm going to confront him. >> years later? >> 2000, 2001. and i wanted to walk into his office and say, hey, remember me. you need to knock this stuff off. i need

my children were small. so i didn't do it. the second time i actually sat down with my children who were there junior high and elementary school and i told them an overview and gave them the ability to make the decision. they were afraid that with all of their special connections that they would be cast cated in the groups. >> so you had to tell your kids something about what had happened. >> right. and we decided together that we wouldn't do it at that time. so when the washington post sought me out, i didn't go looking for this, this fell in my lap. it literally fell in my lap. and i had to make a decision. and i told them that at that time the reporters who just -- were just wonderful to me, that if they found additio

that i would tell my story. and they found those people. >> a couple of things. roy moore denies the allegations and further said he does not even know you. >> i wonder how many names he doesn't know. >> kay lar moore, roy moore's wife has suggested that some of the accusers, although she didn't name you specifically, but some were paid, so i have to ask you, were you paid or compensated in any way by any entity for your story? >> absolutely not. absolutely not. if anything this has cost me. i've had to take leave from my job. i have no tickets to tahiti. and my bank account has not flourished if anything it has gone down. because currently i'm not working. >> when you think about in a sense what you started -- >> yeah. >> you decided to come forward and since then eight other

have come forward. >> right. >> what did you think when you started hearing other stories? can you describe that feeling? is it relief? is it fear or joy. >> i think it is a combination of all of those things. my sorrow that others have had to go through this, but here is the beauty of what has happened. the support has been amazing. women and men have come forward to tell their stories that have never had the ability to do so. because of my courageous actions. >> i want to put a picture up of you at 14 years old and people have seen this photo now. when you see that young lady, what do you think, what goes through your mind? >> she sure did have a lot of promise ahead of her and she didn't deserve to have a 32-year-old man prey upon her. >> and one final question for those watching and

race war. his trial was at the time the trial of the century with members of his cul becoming a spectacle with wild displays of support and as we heard from tom brokaw, describing earlier, one was arrested for trying to assassinate gerald ford but manson was not executed. instead california abolished the death penalty. manson then came close to death during his incarceration when an inmate lit him on fire with paint thinner. over the years manson gave wild interviews in prison showing no remorse and saying he should have killed more people and proclaiming himself the devil. now his death bringing closure to a very dark chapter of his murderous cult but there are still many other manson family cult members alive in prison. so far only one member directly involved in the murders has been paroled and another recently been recommended for release. that recommendation is now in the hands of the governor of california. back to you. >> gaudy swartz. thank you very much. the fbi is investigating the death of a u.s. customs and border protection ant
