a adam tuss has the latest. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. there are lines and then there are lines. take a look here. i don't think i've ever seen a line this long at ragan national airport. starts here at the tsa checkpoint line and goes all the way. it continues all the way to about the middle of the airport on that side. almost to the middle section. this is because of a new tsa procedure that's actually been in place for the last couple of months. they're using canine dogs here at security checkpoints to screen passengers. that means everybody has to pass by that dog and that's slowing down the line just a little bit. take a listen to what the tsa had to say about it. >> we have canines beings

explosive and you can leave your laptop in your carry on case if you get by the sniff test just as though you were in the precheck lane. >> the good news is everybody gets to go through precheck but the canines are slowing things down. guys, we have some tips from the tsa, things that you don't know. go in the bin and make sure you're not wearing any extra accessories. check the bins because the bins are where people leave everything when they're going onto the plane. i can't tell you how many times the tsa has collected things that just get left behind as people are passing through. again, let's take another look at this line here. i've been told it's about 15 minutes from certain points. so if you're coming here to the airport, you have a flight to catch, you need to get on that flight pretty soon, just be prepared.

expected to enter a plea in the sexual abuse case against eight other women. the u.n. command shows the desperate dash to freedom and shooting and rescue of a north korean soldier. soldiers from the north fired at him as he tried to cross the border. south korean soldiers then crawled up to him and dragged. the north violated the armistice agreement by firing across and physically crossing the border in pursuit of the soldier. the defector remains hospitalized after two surgeries. we have an update on the massive senior center fire in pennsylvania. officials have now recovered the remains of two people. this morning they are searching for the remains of two other residents. this fire happened on thursday night when it was bitterly cold out.

injured there. 133 residents have been displaced. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. a warning now if you get busy in the kitchen tonight and tomorrow, fema says thanksgiving day is a high risk day for fires nationwide. it is especially dangerous for people living in apartment or condo buildings. peak fire times are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. the agency wants you to make sure smoke and fire alarms are working and most importantly just to be careful. 17 after the hour. it's about that time. firefighters in our area competed in a cookoff challenge right here on "news 4 today." this morning we are going to find out who you chose as the winner. >> molette chose. molette green has a big crowd and she's going to let us know how we determine the big winner. molette? >> oh, my goodness, yeah. the votes are in, counted, ready to crown the winner. can i just tell you, that food at every fire house was delicious. this was stiff competition.

aircraft crashed into the ocean overnight. >> here's what we know about the breaking news at this hour. it was a navy c-2 aircraft, transport plane that crashed in the pacific ocean just off okinawa japan as it approached the "u.s.s. ronald regan" carrier. 11 passengers aboard the plane. 8 have been found. they're in good condition. they're being evaluated on the ship. monitor for updates all morning long with the nbc washington app. now we want to get to that important holiday week weather forecast. chuck bell is out on the storm team 4 weather deck. a lot of people on the roads, heading to airports, chuck. >> lots going on here this morning. look, even have some help out here on the storm team 4 weather deck. friendly firefighters remind you to fry your turkey extra careful, right? >> yes. >> these are not the people you want to see on thanksgiving. no offense to you, of course. cloudy sky. the rain has come to

st. patrick's day and christmas in terms of alcohol sales with beer sales bumping up close to 300% as well as liquor sales doubling and average wednesday. it's no surprise police are stepping up their patrols. we can tell you this time last year that maryland state police made 93 drunk driving arrests and virginia state police made 132 as well as seeing more than 1,000 crashes. nationwide we are told that nearly 1/3 or more of u.s. traffic deaths did involve drunk driving. when you add to that people drinking and driving in large numbers, this is the reason why. this time of the year it's considered to be one of the most dangerous times to be out on the road. if you are going to go out and you are going to drink, it will be smart to have a sober driver get you home. live here in springfield. i'm justin finch, news 4, back in to you. >> justin, thank you.

6:35. cell phone gotten one metro operator in a lot of trouble. a viewer shared this photo with news 4's transportation reporter, adam tuss. it shows the operator on the cell phone while in the driver's seat. it has removed the driver from service and an investigation is underway now. metro has a zero tolerance policy for using electronic devices while operating trains and buses. they put 18-year-old gerell stroud behind bars yesterday. he shot a 17-year-old outside of blew high school earlier in the month. last check the student was still in critical condition. some neighbors in sterling, virginia, were finally able to get some rest last night. that's because the loudoun county sheriff's office arrested a man who broke into at least 11 homes. robert dixon is in custody. owe took garage door

there aren't too many problems right now here at home, but news 4 transportation reporter adam tuss is live at ragan national airport where he will show us what you need to do to be prepared. adam, there are a lot of lines there already at ragan national. >> reporter: absolutely, eun. it has been a busy morning here at ragan national. let's take a look as another plane is getting ready to make its way out. hopefully going someplace warm. i was talking to somebody headed to tampa, florida. very excited about that. talking about the lines, check out this video of lines that we saw earlier this morning. it was all because of a new canine screening procedure that the tsa was using that actually sniffs and does bomb detection for passengers walking through. the canines will check every single passenger that comes through. that slows up the line and the line went so long and actually formed such a long period that people had to wait.

about missing their flights, but the tsa says that things move pretty quickly when they do this because everybody becomes pre-checked when they do this procedure. it's a relatively new procedure. regardless, people are getting out of town. we're expecting over a million people to leave the local airports over the next week. we caught up with one mom with her hands full with her little ones but taking it all in stride. >> you do what you've got to do. you do what you want to do to see your family. it means that much to me. she gets to see grandma and grandpa. >> reporter: and we have some tips from the tsa also to help you get through the checkpoint line a little bit easier here. you're going to want to make sure you take out everything that's larger than a cell phone if it's an electronic and put it in a bin. you want to make sure you're not over dressing, no extra scarves, jewelry, anything you could leave behind. check the bins. people leave things in the bins
