right now those airports are packed. roads getting jammed. millions of americans headed out of town for the thanksgiving holiday. we get the keys to getting around today. and it is pretty breezy outside right now. temperatures are going to stay comfortable this afternoon, but sunshine, that's also in the forecast from here through your thanksgiving, even black friday. coming up i'll show you how cold your thanksgiving will be. right now we're also getting new information about a deadly shooting in district heights. people living in the area tell us police were called to the scene hours before the victim was discovered. news 4 midday starts now.

>> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. lines as far as the eye can see. at reagan national airport right now. and actually, this was earlier this morning, too. >> lots of people heading out of town for thanksgiving. this is actually the second busiest travel day of the year for airlines. >> have that patience. we're live at reagan national. looks like you have a front-row seat to all the planes waiting to take off. how cool is that? >> reporter: so cool. i'll tell you what, it never gets old coming out here on the runway. thanks to american airlines for getting us out here today as this plane just came in. the bags are loading. american has 250 flights alone just this airline getting out of reagan national today. factor in all the other airlines that are going out of here today, and you know it's going to be a very busy day. this plane right here has about 40 minutes to turn around before it heads up to boston. and it's the case ul up and

country. it's a busy day at the airport. before the first flight even left reagan national this morning -- this was the scene at the security checkpoint line. >> so what you're seeing here today is a pretty long line. >> on and on and on, the line stretched, the reason, these guys, a fairly new program with explosive detection k-9 teams using their noses for security. >> they're giving everybody the sniff test, and if you pass that sniff test, you're going to be able to get expedited screening. >> everyone who makes it past the dog gets to keep their shoes on, their laptops in their bag, essentially tsa precheck. for some travelers the dogs are the ease part. it's wrangling the little ones. >> you do what you have to do to see your family. it means that much to me. get to see grandpa and grandma. >> reporter: a race to get out. over 1 million passengers will take flights out of our local

out in full force tonight trying to catch drunk drivers. aaa says there's always a spike in drunk driving during the holiday. it begins tonight. the wednesday before thanksgiving is known as blackout wednesday. bars and restaurants say they see a big jump in sales the night after thanksgiving. last year at this time maryland police say they arrested 93 drunk drivers. virginia state police say they arrested 132 drunk drivers. if you want to know what the roads are like or how busy the airport is before you head out the door, just go to the nbc washington app. we'll keep it updated all throughout the holiday to help you out. all right, the other big question, now the weather on this busy travel day. we saw a little bit of rain this morning. came in and left quickly. >> i know. now it looks like most of the rain is gone, is that right? >> yeah, most of the rain is gone. really all the rain is gone. so

around now. sunny skies, temperatures 58 degrees but a pretty strong north wind. so these numbers will be dropping here pretty soon. comfortable right now. the breeze is up. winds are sustained near 20 to 25 miles per hour. breezy afternoon today. but all the rain has already left the area. the cold front has just moved through and the rain around boston and much of new england could be causing some travel issues there later on today. locally, though, as you are commuting for the rest of the day today for your thanksgiving travel, dry roads by 4:00 p.m. and by 7:00 p.m. as temperatures overnight will be dropping off. it will be a pretty cold start to your thanksgiving day. i'll show you that forecast coming up. >> all right, thank you. we're waiting to learn more about a deadly pedestrian crash in fairfax county. the metropolitan washington airport authority says a person was hit and killed late last night near the reston east metro stop. sources tell news 4 that the person was trying to get to the metro station and darted across

the dulles access road. we'll update you as soon as we learn more. a young man found shot to death in the woods. prince george's county police are looking for answers. >> they found him last night near a townhouse community. this development is along sun valley terrace in district heights. >> news 4's justin finch explains the details detectives had this morning. >> reporter: hey there, good morning. a lot of focus here on this walkway here. neighbors say they heard shots around 6:00 yesterday, but then police found on that end that young man shot dead on that side of this walkway. somewhere out there a person who pulled the trigger and shot a man who died along this wooded walkway. a crime close to home that many who live nearby wish would come to an end. this neighbor did not want to be seen on camera. >> i just see maybe like ten cars come throug

>> reporter: close to 9:20 last night police found the man's body behind the townhome community on the 6300 block of sun valley terrace. the victim reported to be a man in his 20s. >> they just put the gates in like a week or two ago. they're trying to stop it. just hasn't been stopped yet. >> reporter: that walkway has been a concern. >> yeah, i know there's a lot of like drugs and, you know, at one point in the summertime, people out here find somebody in the woods, you know, alive, just on drugs. you know. it's often. it's too often here. >> reporter: the hope is that trouble does not find itself here again. >> and this is one of the ways that the neighborhood was trying to keep that trouble out. putting up this fence here, iron fence, you'll also see here that it is locked. now prince george's county homicide is now on this case working to find out who shot and killed this man and why they are still looking for tips at this time. we're live here

heights. i'm justin finch, news 4. back in to you. >> justin, thank you. new details this morning following that abrupt funeral home closure in northwest d.c. we have now learned that the d.c. medical examiner is caring for the remains that were removed from that home. more than 100 bodies were taken from the austin royster funeral home. it comes after the d.c. attorney general filed a lawsuit against the business. that lawsuit claims the funeral home charged grieving families for services it did not provide. the ag's office also says it did not have the proper licensing. >> without that license, it can't get death certificates. and without death certificates, it can't inter these remains and provide funeral services that these families need. >> reporter: district officials are working with families to return those remains. the austin royster funeral home has told us it will not comment on the closure or lawsuit. fairfax county is getting a new

welcome back. we know right now eight people are alive after a u.s. navy aircraft with 11 aboard went down off of japan. in a statement earlier, the navy says those found are in good condition while search and rescue efforts continue for the remaining three people. take a look at this map. here's where the c-2 transport aircraft went down earlier today. officials say it somehow crashed while doing an exercise southeast of okinawa, japan. it was headed to the "uss ronald reagan" aircraft carrier which is currently operating in the philippine sea. this year the u.s. navy has seen two fatal accidents in this same region. our news 4 raps david cullver flew in the

that crashed, a c-2 greyhound. it was part of a story that gave us a rare glimpse into the lives of navy sailors at sea. david boarded the plane at the naval station in norfolk and to the "uss truman" off the coast of florida. what's interesting about these planes is that the passengers actually sit reverse to how commercial passengers sit. their backs face the front of the plane. you can see david's full story on our nbc washington app. new video from the u.s.-led u.n. command is released overnight. it shows the desperate dash to freedom, shooting and a rescue of a north korean soldier. soldiers from the north fire at him as he crosses the border. south korean soldiers then crawl up to him and drag him to safety as north korean troops gather on their side of the dividing line. now the detector remains in the hospital after two rounds of surgery. now for the latest update on that massive senior center fire in

sadly, officials have recovered the remains of two people and this morning they're searching for the remains of the two remaining missing residents. the fire happened thursday night when it was bitterly cold outside. more than two dozen people were injured and 133 residents were displaced. the cause of that fire is still under investigation. new developments this morning in that abuse scandal rocking the gymnastics world. gold medalist gabby douglas says she, too, was abused by former team usa dr. larry nassar. in a statement on instagram, the 21-year-old said she did not share her experiences for years because it was too painful. the post was offering an apology to ally raisman. today nassar pled guilty to two charges. in court he

assaulted girls during medical treatment. roy moore has been accused of inappropriate contact with teen aged girls. >> without saying his name, the president seemed to both defend more and endorse him for the senate. edward lawrence has more on what the president said about moore's democratic challenger. >> reporter: president trump seemed to have endorsed alabama senate candidate roy moore telling voters the alternative is worse. >> we don't need a liberal person in there, a democrat. jones, i've looked at his record. it's terrible on crime. it's terrible on the border. >> reporter: the president then casting doubt on moore's accusers who say he preyed on teenaged girl, even sexually assaulting one 14-year-old. >> he totally denies it. he says it didn't happen. you know, have to live sten to also. he said 40 years ago this did not happen. >> reporter: in an interview last night roy moore denies the allegations. >> did you ever date or

with underaged women? >> no. no. >> have you ever engaged in any sexual misconduct with any person? >> no. i mean, it's against the law and it would be wrong. >> reporter: in the next breath president trump says it's good for women to bring these kinds of accusations to light. >> i think it's good for our society. and i think it's very, very good for women. >> reporter: moore joins a growing number of politicians and other big names accused of inappropriate sexual behavior. >> you want to say anything to the people that's accusing you of all these wrongdoings. >> these are not wrongdoing. >> reporter: the list includes charlie rose, john conyers, glenn thrush and al franken. president trump left open the possibility of campaigning for roy moore. he is said to let us know for sure next week. as you know, charlie rose has been fired from cbs because of several sexual misconduct

protect a 10-year-old boy and the bravery he witnessed from capitol hill police officers. matt micah continues to recover five months later. >> when i got to the hospital, they didn't think i was going to make it that day. >> reporter: matt micah was shot in the chest and the arm. he feels lucky and thankful to be alive. mike was standing on the infield when the shooting began. as he ran for cover and the shots continued, he noticed a young boy. >> congressman joe barton, his son was there. my first thought is why was a kid on the field and a shooter and i threw him down. luckily members of congress and staff that were in the dugout and pulled him in. so i don't remember much after that because at some point that's when i got hit, the first time in the chest and the second time in the arm. >> reporter: after the first shot to his chest, micah kept running. he fell by the suv where capitol police agents were exchanging gunfire with the

first base and actually ran as i was hit and then i got by agents griner and bailey and then crystal griner, agent, got shot in the ankle and fell on top of me. >> reporter: as he lay on the ground he was shot a second time. that's when he saw agent griner, who had also been shot, get back up. >> she used her gun, got back up as a crutch and re-engaged with the shooter. >> reporter: micah continues to deal with the pain of cracked ribs and he still has no feeling in one of his hands, but he continues to make progress. >> not going to change who i am, but it's going to make me a better person as i move forward. >> mark segraves reporting there. >> so scary for them to have to go back and recount it. i'm sure they've done that a couple of times to get through the telling of the story. >> but truly amazing stories to hear. >> it is. coming up, a major closure on metro. it starts this weekend. what you need to know ahead of that

many suburbs will be in the 20s. then we go through the afternoon and we stay much cooler than normal for this time of the year. we'll about about 13 degrees below average with our daytime highs but nice and dry for whatever travel you have around the area, maybe traveling to friends and families' houses tomorrow. look at these numbers. in the upper 50s across the area but a cold front did move through. the rain from this morning will not be returning. it's all heading up into new england. that's all part of this cold front. that's why it's pretty windy. it will stay windy through the afternoon. any delays should be in new england or down around florida. our drive, our commuting is looking actually really good for today, tomorrow and black friday. tomorrow morning, look at that. 30 degrees around the district. many suburbs will be in the 20s. tomorrow afternoon we're looking at the mid-40s. for black friday we start in the 30s with afternoon temperatures in the 50s. now, if you're traveling, if you're flying this time, i

and former partridge family co-star danny bonaduce. he posted, i have known, loved and admired david cassidy for 48 out of his 58 years. we've been through a lot together and he was always there for me. this loss is huge. r.i.p., my dear friend. after thanksgiving, prepare for a big shutdown on metro's red line. for two weeks no trains between silver spring and ft. totten. that closure will last from november 25th this weekend through december 10th. for one of the weekends, december 2nd and 3rd, the closure will extend to glenmont. shuttle buses will replace trains. metro says it has to fix a part of the rails where train switch tracks. there's a principal in prince william county who is out to prove he's anything but old school. he's become an unlikely viral sensation thanks to his unusual strategy for turning the

we have a couple more cooking tips for thanksgiving thanks to top chefs at the "today" show. >> making mashed potatoes nobody likes waterlogged mashed potatoes. you bake your potatoes and/or boil them, but then you can press them through the grate. this is the first pressing, if you will, nobody likes to peel potatoes, this way you don't get wat waterlogged potatoes but you already have these in there before you add the melted butter and cream. >> let's go on to pecans or pecans depending where you come from. this one from j.j. johnson. >> i call them pecans. >> as you run out of time doing everything else in the thanksgiving kitchen, run to the store, buy your favorite pie, but what i do is i grab the pecans, i throw them in a pan with baking soda, brown

degrees, 50 martinsburg, that's where the colder air is now. eventually will move through the rest of the area. the rain ahead of this cold front has now moved up into new england. any travel issues today i think would be closer to the boston area. now for the rest of us, let's look at the travel map, delays up towards boston this afternoon. that rain quickly moves out. our temperatures drop off. look at tomorrow for your thanksgiving. we're going to be in the 40s for a daytime high. delays more likely down in florida for tomorrow. and then for black friday that weather system heads up to the carolinas. but for your thanksgiving day morning starting at below freezing temperatures. the roads stay dry. you'll want the puffy coat throughout the day. tomorrow only 47 degrees. nice and dry if you're traveling to relatives or friends' houses tomorrow. friday looks good and the weekend looks dry as well. even next week. >> hackers stole personal information from 57 million uber

uber has revealed a cover-up of a cyber attack that happened last year. after stolen information from customers and drivers, the company paid the hackers to el

reported the incident. he has fired his chief security officer. and citibank has been fined nearly $4 million for shady student loan practices. the consumer financial protection bureau says the bank misled borrowers into believing they were ineligible for a tax deduction on interest they paid on certain loans. the bank also incorrectly charged late fees and extra interest to borrowers who were still in school and eligible to defer payments. well, it is never too early to start thinking about where you might want to retire. unfortunately, the district may not be the place to do it. washington ranks tenth amongst the nation's 50 largest cities. thinkrate.com put out the list of best places to retire. they give scores for transportation, cultural vitality and crime rate, pittsburgh, boston and l.a. ready, set, shop. >> black friday almost here. and our susan hogan has
