from trips out of town to trips to the store. >> we also have a sneak peek at the macy's thanksgiving day parade and ways to shop safely on black friday and of course we have your forecast. first, if you thought that now the roads should be clear, sorry to say we are still in the thick of it of the thanksgiving rush. >> right now you can take a look at this lye mive map from first traffic. all of this a combination of getaway traffic and rush hour for those of us who had to work today and those making trips to get their last-minute supplies before the big day tomorrow. here now a live look at i-95 north. this is near the icc. as you can see there, lots of lights stacking up going -- i can't tell if that's going north or south but i would guess that's going north. on top of all that, the temperature is dropping right now. we are in for a cold start to thanksgiving here. >> let's check in with doug. >> we've already seen the temperature drop 15 to 20 degrees from where we were earlier today. 10:00 a.m. this m

59 at the airport, near 60, quite nice, right? the actual temperature down to 45. the windchill down into the 30s in the d.c. metro area, and you notice the actual temperatures in the 30s to the west. that's the colder air making its way in here and we'll be in for a very cold night and cold start to your thanksgiving. high temperatures brought down as a result of the winds. the winds gusting 21 miles per hour in d.c., 21 gaithersburg, 20 in fredericksburg. the wind will calm a little bit overnight but even a 5 to 10-mile-an-hour wind will make things a lot colder. tomorrow morning a chilly thanksgiving for sure, especially tomorrow morning. the roller coaster continues, some ups, some downs and way ups as well. way ups instead of way downs. i like those a lot better. much more on this forecast including what to expect hour by hour in about ten minutes. now, this was not the way lots of people wanted to start their thanksgiving holiday. this bad crash on route 50 near the beltway backed up traffic big time.

worst time of time to be traveling through that area. the crash was so intense it threw people out of the car. we're still waiting to hear how they're doing. we'll let you know once we hear more. this also the busiest travel day for people leaving town on the rails. union station was very busy today. during last year's thanksgiving travel period more than a quarter of a million passengers hit the rails. >> it is busy at the airports, crews working overtime at reagan national, getting all the planes in and out of there and long security lines inside. explosives dogs are checking passengers and passengers we talked to say it's worth it. >> she gets to see grandpa and grandma. >> if you're heading out, we have the best and worst times to get on the road. it's in our nbc washington app, just search travel tips. now let's get back to that video you saw at the top. chaosea

school. >> a security guard got caught in the middle of this. >> news4's erika gonzalez in our newsroom to break this down for us. what's going on here? >> isn't that just wild? this scene played out at gaithersburg high school monday around noon. somebody recorded video of the brawl after rushing down some stairs as you saw there. in that video, you can see a security guard try to break things up. there was also a lot of profanity we had to bleep out for you. the security guard appears to get knocked down, but montgomery county schools tells us he wasn't attacked, he actually tripped and fell. other school staff members had to come in and try to get everything under control. the district says six students were involved in all of this and they will be disciplined. despite all those punches, nobody was hurt. the investigation into that brawl continues. in the newsroom, i'm erika gonzalez. back to you guys. >> thank you, erika. this just in now to our

newsroom. baltimore police just confirmed the detective shot and killed in the line of duty was slain with his own weapon. investigators say evidence shows detective shawn suitor struggled. he was a father of five and used to live in the district. an update on the virginia teacher who actually pulled o off -- we first told you about the incident last week. the superintendent of the fairfax county schools says the teacher will be returning to lake braddock high school after the thanksgiving holiday saying there does not appear to have been any malice in the teacher's actions. the teacher has been disciplined and apologized. he said he thought the hijab was a hoodie and they are not allowed to be worn in school. only on 4, new details in the case of that man accused of raping an au student. she thought he was an uber driver, ended up alone with him

he says she was will to have sex with him but today a judge disagreed with that. news4's mark segraves was in court for that. >> reporter: the suspect admits he drove the victim and her friend to american university and he admits to having sex with the woman, but he insists it was consensual. the evening started at this nightclub in dupont circle. according to testimony today from a police detective, the woman and her friend drank a half a bottle of vodka and a full bottle of champagne at the club. then about 3:00 a.m. they flagged down what they thought was an uber driver. according to the driver and the woman's friend, the woman was very drunk and arguing with her male companion in the back seat of the car. when the car got to american university, the male passenger got out. that's when the driver took off with the female passenger still in the car. surveillance video shows the car driving around campus for 10 or 15 minutes before it stin

that's where the woman says the driver raped her. and then drove her back to her dormitory on campus and dropped her off. during the entire incident, neither the woman or her male friend called police. the judge threw out the kidnapping charges saying there wasn't enough evidence but she said there was probable cause for a sexual assault because the woman was too drunk to give consent. as for the suspect's relationship to uber, the prosecutor told the judge he had been barred from working for uber two years ago but had an uber sticker in his car and was posing as a driver to make money. he was released on gps monitoring until his next court date in january. mark segraves, news4. new fallout surrounding the sex assault allegations against roy moore in alabama. today the communications director for the senate candidate left the embattled campaign. jennifer johnson is live on capitol hill with more on that news and the most recent

j jennifer? >> reporter: in a new interview on the radio, roy moore again denied the allegations against him and now it appears he has the backing of the president. alabama senate candidate roy moore still denying he sexually preyed upon young girls. >> did you ever date or go out with underage women? >> no. no. >> have you ever engaged in any sexual misconduct with any person? >> no. it's against the law and it would be wrong. >> reporter: after weeks of silence, president trump all but endorsed moore tuesday. despite prominent gop leaders, including house speaker paul ryan and senator majority leader mitch mcconnell urging moore to get out of the race. >> we don't need a liberal person in there, a democrat, jones. i've looked at his record. >> reporter: but a former mcconnell aide says the senate leader is on the right side of this. >> losing a seat is preferable

senate. i think in this case obviously he would like a republican, but he's not going to accept a republican he thinks is unacceptable. >> reporter: voters decided to elect mr. trump even after more than a dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct. nine women have accused moore and now voters are divided. moore's opponent, democrat doug jones, is putting the accusers' faces front and center. >> they were girls when roy moore immorally pursued them. >> reporter: unveiling this ad less than three weeks before voters go to the polls. president trump has left open the possibility of actually campaigning for moore, saying he'll decide that next week. live on capitol hill, i'm jennifer johnson, back to you. three people missing after that u.s. navy plane crashed into the ocean very early this morning. the plane carrying 11. eight have been pulled from the water in good condition. the c-2 navy greyhound transportation plane went down in the philippine sea. it was flying to the

u.s. and japanese boats searching for the three missing passengers. the navy has not released the names of those pulled from the water or those they are searching for. the missing plane is the same kind that news4's david culver flew on just a few weeks ago. >> david is joining us now here. you had rare access to navy personnel aboard the uss truman? >> that's right. >> and you were onboard the same kind of aircraft? >> that's how you get on there if it's out to sea. i realize we were actually attached to the sixth fleet in the atlantic ocean and this crash we should pointed out involved the seventh in the pacific, but they use the same planes to get passengers on and off a carrier while at sea. the greyhound is commonly referred to as a cod or carrier on board delivery. this is us boarding a greyhound late last month from naval station norfolk. it carries sailors to journalists, to mail and other

it's unlike any commercial plane. where are the seats facing? backwards, right. they're going to tell you that's often safer in the event of an impact. secondly, there are only two windows in the cabin to look out. it gets rather dark in there too as you sit closer to the cockpit. you've got to wear those cranials, head gear and a flotation device. but the crew walks you through what to do should something go wrong. take a listen. >> in any event, place two hands on it, turn your right hand clockwise and using the arm rest and headrest to help your way out of the aircraft. >> they don't just do that for us being journalists, they do it for anybody onboard. we got rare footage inside the cockpit. the crew, i've got to tell you, could not have been more accommodating or focused on our safety. upon landing, the aircraft catches one of those lines on the carrier flight deck and

taking off they use that catapult launch that those jets use, quite forceful. while sailors joke and say the cod is not the most attractive plane, they'll tell you it's reliable. i was in touch with a top navy official who tells me going back to 1980, there has not been a fatal incident involving one of those c-2 greyhounds, that's 37 years. they also had talked about eventually phasing them out. that was scheduled to start next year, well before this incident even happened. they'll likely replace them in the osprey, which we see -- >> it's like a helicopter to land. >> exactly. >> and we don't know how far out the plane was from the carrier when it went down? >> as of now it seems like it was a couple of hundred miles out. this is something that they're still working to find those three individuals. >> absolutely. thank you, david. a news4 i-team investigation gets results for local teachers. >> many of those teachers they have been paying for their classroom supplies out of their own pocket and have not been

there's a new plan to help thousands of local teachers because of a newser for i-team investigation. at the peak of shopping season the d.c. council has formally proposed a $400 tax credit for teachers that buy supplies for their students and classrooms. >> reporter: local school teachers combine to spend millions of dollars out of pocket to buy supplies for their classrooms and for their students. our survey of more than 1200 local teachers reveals they have to spend personal money on items that are not provided by local schools, or school districts. cleaning supplies, art supplies, pencils, papers, d.c. teachers get a $200 gift card to cover some of the costs, but citing our reporting, mary chay has introduced legisla

d.c.'s public and charter school teachers a $500 tax credit for classroom purposes. >> they take full ownership of it and do whatever it is they have to do to make them succeed, including spending their own money. as you know from the story that you did, dcps gives them a gift card every year for $200. that usually is hardly what they need. >> reporter: the d.c. council will have to do a fiscal impact of this bill to see much it will cost the government. it already has ten d.c. council co-sponsors. leon, back to you. a famous 60-foot tall statue of confederate general robert e. lee could be removed from a prominent spot in richmond, virginia. that stood in richmond on monument avenue since 1890. terry mcauliffe said it might cost $10 million, but he's considering legislation to move it. >> listen, these statues, i mean

but now after charlottesville and others, you've seen, tom, that these statues, what the rebel flag or confederate flag had been back then is just the same device. so i've always said a better place would be probably in battlefields or museums. >> governor mcauliffe already has signed an executive order to ban guns from around the lee statue in richmond. the order also limits protests to 500 people now instead of 5,000. growing outrage and new investigations after the revelation that uber paid off hackers and kept secret that data breach that affected millions of people. several attorneys general have announced an investigation into the 2016 breach and the cover-up. the ride-sharing company also faces a hefty fine in the united kingdom for not revealing this breach. hackers stole names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers from 57 million accounts. they also stole driver's license information from 600,000 uber

we starred oted off nice an balmy and now it's chilly and windy. >> cold air is coming in and it's here to stay for one day. it just happens to be thanksgiving. then it's going to warm up very nicely. put the fire on, just chill out there. we started off quite nicely. not too bad at all. you may not even need the coats today but right now it's on the cool side. down to 45. winds out of the northwest at 12 miles an hour giving us a windchill. let's talk with those highs today first off. 59, that was the high in d.c. 59 quantico and fredericksburg all coming in right around the 10:00 hour. then we started to see the temperatures cool. look where it is right now. the current windchill, 39 in d.c. down to 29 the windchill in wist

manassas, down to 36 in baltimore. so, yes, it's a cold night and will continue to be. right on through tomorrow morning it will be on the cold side. nothing on the radar. don't look at this, nothing really happening in that area, but we are looking at colder air coming in after a storm system made its way through this morning. there it is, that storm moving quickly up the coast brought us some shower activity but most of us remain dry. now we're just seeing colder air move across the great lakes right on down into our region. tomorrow we'll be on the cold side but that's really about it. that's the only real significant weather we have. tomorrow morning starting off below freezing in most locations. roads staying dry so weather will not have a big impact on your drive anywhere if you're driving out of town. what to wear, yeah, a puffy coat, maybe the hat, the gloves, the scarves, maybe early in the day but during the afternoon the winds will calm. chilly but 47 with sunshine, not too bad. 43 by 11:00 a.m. down to 44 degrees at 7:00. sun goes down at

night. now, 53 degrees on your friday. look at the temperature going right back up close to 60 on saturday. would not be surprised to see 60 in some areas. rather nice weather early on saturday before we cool again. another front moves through saturday into sunday and really cools the temperatures down by about 10 degrees on sunday. right back to 52 degrees on your monday, 62, though, on tuesday and 63 on wednesday. some very warm air as the storm system stays to our north this time and then we start to cool just a little bit. but this is going to be a very mild forecast. the next ten days, the coldest just happens to be thanksgiving with that high of 47 tomorrow. that means a cold redskins game. of course that game right here on nbc tomorrow night at 8:30, so we're going to be talking much more about the redskins forecast and about your black friday forecast as well, which looks a little chilly, but not too bad. i'll have that for you coming up at 6:45. tonight one of the most dangerous nights of the year to be on the road. >> next at 6:30, how the police are stepping up their efforts getting drunk drivers off

welcome back on this thanksgiving eve. i'm wendy rieger. >> and i'm leon harris. let's get you caught up on the top stories this evening. roy moore's communications director is in longer with the campaign. this news comes as the alabama senate candidate continues to deny sex assault allegations. president trump appeared to endorse moore yesterday but hasn't said whether he'll campaign with moore. three people are missing in the philippine sea after a u.s. navy plane went down. eight people were pulled from the water and are expected to be okay. the navy has not released the names of any of the 11 onboard. it's been a slow go on the roads as people get away for thanksgiving. this bad crash on route 50 backed up traffic big-time. all the roads are jammed right now and the airports are busy, but things seem to be running on time. a d.c. woman says that she has had the worst few weeks of her life. >> she was supposed to be laying her mother to rest today but now is caught in the middle of a legal dispute between the d.c. prosecutors and alo

home. >> that funeral home is accused of taking money from grieving families. meagan fitzgerald explains how that has many families still looking for closure. >> she's been holding the fort down for this family her entire life while she was here. >> reporter: diane bond lived 67 years, but for as long as her daughter can remember, she's been the rock of the family. but on november 9th, diane lost her four-year battle to cancer. >> she was always there for me whenever i needed her. >> reporter: lavon says now it's time for her to be there for her mother. >> i made phone calls to funeral homes. and i talked to royster. >> reporter: she called the chief operating officer for the austin royster funeral home. she says royster was taking care of the funeral arrangements. she received this receipt showing she paid out of pocket more than $2,000. what lavon didn't know was that the attorney general's office was pre

against the business. it says the funeral home was operating without a business license for nearly two years and that the funeral director's license was suspended back in june because he was allowing jamele royster to act as the director even though she wasn't licensed. >> i blow her phone up, she answers. hey, what's going on? >> reporter: lavon was supposed to bury her mother this morning. >> this was the outfit she was going to wear today. >> reporter: instead she's fighting to get her money back so she could afford a ceremony so her family can properly say good-bye. >> i'm lost. i have no clue. i really don't know where to start. >> reporter: the attorney general's office tells us that they reached an agreement with the austin royster funeral home which prevents them from doing any business moving forward. this is an active

investigation. criminal charges could be filed. meagan fitzgerald, news4. >> she did try to reach out to the funeral home today and says that she's not yet heard back from them. we have an update on a news4 consumer investigation we first reported last month. fairfax county police have now filed charges against one of the men at the center of our undercover investigation that involved alleged tree cutting schemes. consumer reporter susan hogan working for you with the new details. >> reporter: that's right. john samuel walker has been charged with one felony and one misdemeanor related to a case against savannah's tree and yard experts we told you about back in october. you may remember rose. she said walker randomly showed up at her home and offered to take down dead trees. rose also claims walker used scare tactics to try to get her to pay an additional $14,000 to fix her roof. news4 later learned walker did not have a roofer's license and her roof

giving thanks for the wounded warriors who serve in our nation's military. vice president mike pence and his wife, karen, visited walter reed today and met privately with five patients who are undergoing treatment there. they appeared in front of cameras at the uso warrior and family center. the pences plan to spend thanksgiving with their son who's serving in the marine corps. we're working for you making sure you shop safely this holiday season. >> the stores and even the parking lots can get a little bit crazy, so here are a few tips from aaa. first, try not to shop alone. it's always a good idea to make sure you have someone looking out for you. it's also nice to have someone there that you can vent to a

this evening a virginia family is savoring the special connection that they had with '70s teen heartthrob david cassidy. cassidy of course passing away from organ failure. they believe his music helped get them through an especially difficult time. >> as news4's chris gordon reports, they call the partridge family star a life saver. >> reporter: david cassidy's death is a personal loss for kelly hennessey. >> i was really, really sad and i was so upset because he was so kind to me when i met im

>> reporter: hennessey believes david cassidy helped save her life. in 2015 she was in a coma after a near fatal car accident with her son, carson. at the hospital, her husband, greg, tried waking her from the do doma by singing her favorite song, "i think i love you" and playing the recorded version by her teenage heartthrob, david cassidy. >> i just kept singing that over and over, and to be quite frank with you, many times through tears. i was trying to reach her but it was a sad thing too. >> reporter: kelly came out of the coma after three months. during her recovery, she and greg were invited to see david cassidy perform. cassidy held her hand and sang "i think i love you." >> getting to meet him was such an honor, such a thrill of mine. i never have been happier. >> reporter: kelly says she's blessed to see her son, carson, play in the school band and their oldest, clayton, about to graduate from high school.

a lot of people say this is the start of their thanksgiving holiday here in the city. there's security that you have to go through now. they are serpentining the line. it is six blocks long. thousands of people waiting an hour and a half to be just a part of this inflation party. they have blocked off a lot more roads around the actual parade route as well. that's something that's going to continue for the weekend. they're going t.o have ramped u security throughout the weekend. they have police on every corner, they have sand trucks filled and blocking some of these streets. they have sharpshooters here as well as a terrorism task force that's on the ground. so they're going to make sure that everything stays safe. when you talk to the folks coming through here, boy, they continue to come through, they say they don't mind the show of security. they don't mind the extra time here, because this is a tradition that they want to uphold
