>> 6:02. we're following that breaking news in fairfax county this morning. a live look at the scene in franconia. a major accident on the beltway snamt justin finch is live on the scene with details on what's going on there. justin, a terrible accident. >> reporter: yeah. terrible indeed, eun. as we were coming on the air now, we have confirmation that this was indeed a fatal accident. take a look behind me. the investigation remains under way. virginia state police are on scene as well as fairfax county fire and rescue. the work right now is beginning to wrap up in terms of the investigation. we understand. but as you can see, that car is wedged right under that tractor-trailer. making for a difficult removal of the scene. right now, we're seeing the two left lanes on 495. the inner loop near van dorn street moving at this time at speed. this could change as the morning picks up.

state police on the scene of a deadly crash in franconia. the person in the car still wedged underneath the tractor-trailer has died in this accident. >> news 4's justin finch is live on the scene and he'll have reports updating us on the situation in a few minutes. how do you start your holiday? we want to start you off with a few stories you should know about. >> this crash on interloop of the beltway. we know a police officer -- police officer, three children and five adults are in the hospital. police say a driver flipped the officer' cruiser stending his car into two others. we're learning more about the navy aircraft crash. search and rescue efforts under way on this thanksgiving for three sailors. they were among 11 aboard the aircraft that crashed on wednesday. the navy says the plane was flying from a marine base in japan to the "uss ronald reagan" when it went down in

philippine sea. the eight people rescued are all in good condition. engine fail ir may have played a role in the crash. the man accused of posing as an uber driver -- police say his accuser got into his car after a night of drinking because she thought he was an uber driver. prosecutors say he was banned from uber but he still had the uber sticker in his window. the judge says the woman was too drink to give consent. the suspect is due back in court in january. for the latest on the murder of baltimore police detective sean suiter. he was raised here in d.c. baltimore police commissioner kevin davis gave an update on the murder investigation wednesday. davis said suiter was shot with his own gun. davis also said there's video from a private camera that shows suiter's partner immediately taking cover and calling for help after the shooting. and a significant update here is that we know t

a federal witness against other police officers. he was expected to testify before a grand jury the day after he was killed. we now turn to a story demonstrating the generosity of our community as you help to prepare your family's meal, a lot of charities are preparing food for thousands in need. >> they are preparing 3500 thanksgiving meals. megan, always a great sight to see this thanksgiving morning. >> reporter: it really is. quite an assembly line. a lot of people are stressing out because they can't cook for their own family because it's such a chore. can you imagine 3500 holiday meals. that's an awful lot. that's what they're doing told. it wouldn't be possible without all the volunteers here. the people that you see here assembling o

a full holiday meal. but for their friends and family as well. among those who are volunteering is emily harris. you volunteer, actually, on regular days, not just holidays. there has to be a special vibe today. >> it's great. i feel i have a lot to be thankful for. it's begun to get up early and pack meals for those in need. really love doing this. >> the food is going to people battling serious illnesses. they're not up to cooking. >> it's serious to be in that situation and it's good to pay it forward. i feel good doing that. >> i'll let you get back to it. they have a lot of work to do. a couple of hours from now, all of this food will be loaded up. they have another sweep of volunteers. the folks that drive the meals to the homes of the clients. that's all

so do you see a lot of deer where you live? >> they're everywhere. >> including in the parking lot at news 4. drivers, take note. it is deer mating season. i've never seen that. >> you haven't? >> no. >> they don't want to do it in the open. avoiding them is part of -- you may be surprised to hear where the number of crashes involving deer is rising.

>> yr the changing fall foliage, traipsing amid bushes and branches deer moving majestically where most of us prefer to see them. problem is, all too often they're winding up here too. on the roads and in traffic. for the next month, experts say you'll see even more deer as mating season ramps up. with this month said to be their peak time. insurance company state farm finds between now and december your chance of hitting a large animal doubles. even in the district their collision rates are rising. >> don't be surprised if you encounter a deer in the middle of the road in washington, d.c. >> if you think you've seen more deer and car crashes recently, your eyes are not deceiving you. turns out, aaa counts a 50% deer and vehicle spike in collisions. that's between 2015 and 2016. t

scene following details. justin, terrible news this morning. >> reporter: indeed, eun. we've been watching all morning as the ebb and flow of that state police investigation still going on just behind us there. do you see that -- the tractor-trailer parked, rather, that sedan wedged beneath it there. remaining as it has been now for hours. we understand now from police, it's about 3:36 this morning that tractor-trailer was parked on the side of the road. that car somehow lost control and crashed right into the back of it getting wedged, the front portion of it right under that vehicle. fairfax fire rescue had been on scene all morning, as well as v-dot crews. we have traffic moving on the two left outer lanes. but those right lanes right now are focused and blocked for this investigation. as you have seen right now, traffic is moving at speed. however, if you encounter

the number of kitchen fires more than tripled on thanksgiving day. there's an average of 1400 kitchen fires on that day compared to 400 on other days of the year. to cook your dinner safely, avoid loose clothing with long sleeves near burners and ovens. keep the kids away from stove tops and turn the panhandles to the back of the stove. that will prevent the kids from spilling hot food on themselves and adults too. if you have questions about your turkey today, the butterball hotline is open. it gets about 100,000 calls each holiday season. we've seen that number -- the number on bottom of the screen. >> people tend to overcook the turkey. you want to make sure it's cooked thoroughly. that's not the only way you can reach out. butterball will now have

as you spend your time getting ready for your meals. volunteers are working to feed thousands in need. >> news 4's megan mcgrath is with them as they prepare these hundreds of meals. megan, they're making good progress this morning. >> reporter: they are making good progress. they have this down to a science here. you can see the assembly line behind me. in the bags, those are the pies and some of the sides. we're talking about all of the traditional sides, the potatoes, the stuffing. you name it. we're talking meals for not just the clients, but meals for their friends and family as well so they can do entertaining. even though they're fighting life-threatening diseases and might not feel up to cooking themselves. that's what this program is all about. if you look over here, this is the end product here. this is the meal that's going to be delivered to people this morning. they're going to start making those deliveries pretty soon. joining me is craig snyderman,

and friends. talk a little bit about this. this is a huge, huge effort. >> this is a very big effort. every day is a big effort. but thanksgiving is special because we're delivering to 3,500 people. but this thanksgiving is more special because we're taking care of some people who are in greater need. that's people in puerto rico. our sister organization, bill's kitchen serves 850 people with aids. they were devastated by the hurricanes. they've been without power for more than 70 days. we're donating to make sure they get a new generator. >> fantastic. >> reporter: the donation, pie sales is helping with that. obviously, helping others in san juan as well. just making sure everyone has a good thanksgiving. back to you guys. >> thank you so much, megan. we love the work at food and friends. h
