across the u.s. >> we're out of that one. we have the one for $949. >> reporter: with holiday shoppers taking advantage of great deals in person and online. >> i wait all year. i wait until black friday. it's cheaper. >> reporter: 164 million americans are expected to shop this weekend and cyber monday, shelling out $682 billion. for the first time shoppers' top destination for spending is online. more consumers are buying on the smartphones, too. nearly half of all online shopping is happening on mobile devices. that's why jcpenney, walmart, target and best buy are dropping prices dramatically. brick and mortar are trying to bounce back after closing 6,700 retail stores this year alone. and this holiday season, some of the best deals are at 30,000 feet. it

season. amazon is ef of all sales growt. >> jo kent for us in new jersey. thank you. we have breaking news to report on oscar pistorius. the double-amputee sprinter who was convicted of killing his girlfriend in 2013. overnight, south africa's supreme court of appeal overturned his sentence. >> good morning, everyone. this legal saga has lasted nearly five years now. but this morning, it took just minutes for a judge to more than double the jailrus. he wasn't even in court to hear the judge say, up until now, he's been treated with shocking lenien leniency. the verdict was unanimous and unexpected. south africa's supreme court calling

>> reporter: pistorius who turned 31 on wednesday wasn't even in court to hear the judge say the previous sentence of six years was shockingly lenient. pistorius, he says, doesn't demonstrate any genuine remorse and has failed to explain why he fired the fatal shots. he shot his girlfriend reeva steenkamp four times through a locked door at his home. her parents watched the verdict on tv. they told nbc news, the trust in the justice system has been confirmed. there can never be complete coe sure. they love her and miss her every day. pistorius claimed he shot his girlfriend on valentine's day because he shot she

intruder. mur conviction. and pistorius now has the minimum sentence for murder. well, many in south africa say a poor black defendant would have got this sentence from the very beginning. pistorius' fame and background protected him. his brother, karl, just posted on twitter saying, shattered, heartbrok heartbroken, gutted. pistorius may be moved to a high-security jail to serve the rest of his sentence. >> it is a trial that's captured the attention of the entire world. bill, thank you for that. president trump spent his first thanksgiving as commander in chief at mar-a-lago, where he got news about michael flynn tied to the russian investigation. kelly o'donnell is in palm beach. >> reporter: aig

president is trying to take a t led by robert mueller. this new development is seen as a potential turning point. and it involves a former close adviser who had access to government secrets for a brief time inside the white house. as the president and first lady paid a holiday visit to coast guardsmen stationed in florida, mr. trump quipped about the unpredictable nature of allies. >> even if they're allies, you never know about an ally. an ally can turn. you're going to find that out. >> reporter: now, there's new drama surrounding his one-time ally, former national security adviser michael flynn. he's under scrutiny in robert mueller's probe into russian election interference. as reported by "the new york times," according to four people involved in the case, flynn's lawyer notified the president's legal team wednesday night that the retired general's defense team would no longer share inat

common pracce a noteworthy shif. outside lawyer, jay sekulow, said it's not entirely unexpected that flynn may be discussing a plea with the special counsel. he emphasized that no one should draw a conclusion that this is general flynn cooperating against the president. flynn's lawyer declined comment. earlier this month nbc news reported that federal investigators gathered enough evidence to bring charges against flynn, who is under scrutiny for his foreign lobbying work, involving russia and turkey. mueller is also looking at his son, michael, who worked in his consulting business. thursday, the younger flynn tweeted he is thankful for having a strong family. these days, the president rarely speaks of flynn, who served as a top campaign adviser and worked in the administration for just

one of the qu sanctions in order -- in return for help from the russians? and michael flynn lost his job over lying about his conversation with the russian ambassador. so shg, this gets to the core o what bob mueller is pursuing. paul manafort was indicted for conspire and issues related to money laundering. but the purpose is to go after this russia connection. if you're the national security adviser to the president of the united states, you don't get much higher than that. >> i have been talking to sources overnight. the official line from trump's legal team is this is not a surprise. but if you talk to other members of his inner circle, there is concern. how much concern is there within the west wing right now? >> i think there's a lot

know, we've seen reports that president trump has been comforted by optimistic readings from the attorneys about how this investigation is going. i suspect they're going to change their tune after this because prosecutors do not give -- do not accept cooperation from defendants unless they think they're going to get something significant. and so, the idea that michael flynn is either actively cooperating or negotiating to cooperate, indicates that he's told them there's something significant that he can help them with. and they look for people higher up the chain, there's only one person higher up the chain than the national security adviser. that's the president. >> you know when the president, when republicans get back, they want to get tax reform passed before christmas. to what extent does this overshadow the president's agenda and that effort?

pele are pitching to help it wa the veteran with a heart of gold. the gofundme page up to $300,000. the support comes after bobbit helped kate mcclure who was standed outside of philadelphia when she ran out of gas. after calling her girlfriend, she noticed a stranger approaching. it was bobbit, homeless, with just 20 bucks in his pocket. he told her to wait in her car and with the last of his money he bought her gasoline. a marine corps medic, bobbit wanted to be a flight nurse. these pictures from his facebook shows him as a younger man. but recently, he's fallen on hard times. "the philadelphia enquirer" said the north carolina native's life took an unfortunate turn because

happened. her neighbors told reporters that she rarely leaves the house. investigators have new clues in her kidnapping case, but no leads. the investigator publishing the first sketches of the two masked suspects that papini described as hispanic women. and this surveillance camera showing papini moments after she was released. she was abducted while jogging in her home. >> i found her phone, and it has hair ripped out of it. >> reporter: her husband, keith, calling 911, to report her disappearance. >> i'm freaking out, thinking someone grabbed her. >> we do not know if she was a specific target or if this was a random abduction. >> reporter: three weeks later, she was found on this freeway, about 150 miles away. >> chp has her. >> reporter: she was emaciated, her weight down to 87 pounds.

start day. to this morning on "today food," quick, delicious dinners to your busy schedule, with the added benefit of being loaded with veggies. mark bittman, one of my favorites. this is a healthy postthanksgiving meal. >> this is vegetarian pad thai. it looks complicated. but we can make it simpler. >> we have our tasters digging in. how big of a shopping list do we need?

>> these are rice noodles. you don't have to cook you just soak them. >> how long do les than ten min. yo taste them and see when the texture's good. you cover them with boiling water and let them sit for a while. and other ingredients, eggs, scallions, this is a kind of seawe seaweed. >> what makes it interesting? >> it's -- all seaweed is good for you. this is harvested in maine. and it's really delicious stuff. >> how do we do this? >> well, we're going to make a little flat omelet. that takes a couple of beaten eggs. you use a bigger pan than you ordinarily would for an omelet. and you flatten it out and let it sit. you put it in the oven, which is
