by blowing up cars outside. they even shot at the ambulances that were there to rescuehe victims. no group has come forward to claim responsibility as yet. in a tweet this afternoon about the incident, president trump said this attack is another reason why we need a wall and a travel ban. meagan, jim, back to you. >> leon, thank you. >> new details about a fire in prince george's county makes a tragic story even sadder. >> a blaze trapped an 80-year-old woman inside her capitol heights home. she died, but it's not the only loss for the family this month. news4's derrick ward is live at wilburn drive with the story for us. derrick? >> reporter: yeah, jim, you know, this family was already grieving from the loss of a family member. and then this fire happened this morning. now, the cause has yet to be determined, but this normally quiet neighborhood is even a lot more quiet now as it is starting to think in about the

loss that happened here earlier this morning. family members going about the grim task of salvaging important papers and pictures, a long life of accumulation in a pickup truck from a fire that raged in early dawn. >> i woke up my wife immediately and i knew charlie is next door. his house was on fire. >> we had to deal with some bars on the windows and doors, and because of the very heavy fire conditions that are reported somebody 2r5trapped, we sent fi fighters in. >> reporter: the victim elaine james was pulled from a second floor room around 3:15 in the morning. rescuers wrorkd to revive her but she died in the hospital shortly after. a fire fighter was also injured and he's recovering at a local burn unit. the homeowner's adult son who lived here was treated ford smoke inhalation. he got himself out but he couldn't get to his mother. >> was out trying to get people to call 9191.

>> deeper than the physical. two weeks ago his father lawrence james passed away. >> it's kind of sad a few days later he's losing his mom. >> reporter: neighbors say the son cared for his parents and helped others around the neighborhood. lawrence and elaine james had called home for 35 years. >> he would cut our grass for us, stuff like that. he was a good handyman around the neighborhood. >> reporter: investigators say there were no working smoke alarms in the home. while the cause of the fire has not been determined, it's effects are clear, it destroyed this house. it took this life. and it landed an emotional blow to a family already grieving. again, investigators are still trying to determine what caused this fire. jim? >> derrick, were there any smoke detectors in the house? >> reporter: well, we understand there may have been one, but it may not have been working. that is the key to this. as a matter of fact, as you saw fire fighters were actually back out here today to canvas this neighborhood. theefr going to visit as many as

were working smoke detectors and people had at least some sort of escape plan so if the unthinkable happened they did have a hedge against tragedy. but from what we understand, no working smoke detectors in the home at the time of this fire. >> all right, derrick, thank you. prince george's county police have just released the name of a man hit and killed by two cars. police tell us those cars hit sergey domini of bowie. this happened last night in prince george's county at the intersection of mets rot road and new hampshire avenue. officers say the first driver stayed on the scene, but a second driver did not. investigators believe that that second driver may have realized that they hit someone. police are still looking for that second driver. >> also new at 5:00, graffiti targeting jewish people in a park. the markings have the attention of d.c. police tonight. someone spotted the graffiti spray painting on a rosa parks softball field at 26th and p street northwest

the white house won't get any more information from michael flynn's lawyers about the investigation into russian election interference. the team representing the former national security advisor cut ties with president donald trump's legal team. the cause of the policy change is a mystery. some speculate it's a sign flynn is moving to cooperate with special prosecutor robert mueller. but a lawyer for the president warned against drawing any conclusions. >> ivanka trump is sticking up for president barack obama's eldest daughter malia after videos were posted online showing her kissing a young man and blowing smoke rings.

this month is supposed to be the peak. insurance companies, state farm says between now and december, your chance of hitting a large animal doubles. there is also a lot more deer according to aaa. for example, here in rock creek park, they measure about 100 deer per square mile. collision rates are also rising in d.c. aaa counts about a 50% spike in deer and vehicle collisions between 2015 and 2016 in the district. >> they rule rock creek around this time of year. >> yeah, they do. >> d.c. has a parking problem we know, but alexandria, get this, has too much parking. >> yeah. that's a nice problem to have, right? a report from the city of alexandria finds that about 10% of the land that is being used for parking is not being used at all. city leaders conducted a survey and discovered that most drivers opt taxis or youtubers. as a result a lot of parking space n

couple days here's what we're expecting. temperature wise, temperatures will be warmer tomorrow. 52 in d.c., leesburg pair of 48s in gaithersburg and rockville. radar all dry and we'll stay that with you not just for the next couple days but probably the next two weeks. i do not see any real good chances for rain at all over the next two weeks -- two-week period. the next chance right here, for tomorrow night, as the cold front moves in. but i'm really not expecting it to bring much. what it will bring, though, is chilly air in here on sunday. again, i've got thanksgiving travel forecast because it is still the thanksgiving holiday weekend. chilly across the mid-atlantic and northeast if you're going to be driving around. road wise really no impacts. or if you're flying, no impacts across the entire country. the only exception up here towards vancouver, seattle or portland. if you're flying into vancouver, maybe towards whistler, british columbia. i don't know why you would. i love it up there. quite nice. they've had record snow fall in parts of the northwest. your saturday outlook, we

i use that feature all the time. saves you a lot. all right. so, black friday might force you to get off the couch and get out to the stores. retailers are reinventing the way they win over you. consumer reporter susan hogan shows us a few examples. >> well, even though a lot of stores have closed, a lot actually this past year have actually opened. you may not recognize their actual store fronts, but you're going to recognize their names, and there's a reason for this. retailers are rallying to make a comeback going to great lengths, even shrinking their stores. earlier this year, kohl's announced it's cutting square footage to focus more on digital sales. and target is opening small f format stores targeting millennials. shopping as we know it is headed for a change. >> we're looking for innovation, so something that brings a different wrinkle to the way the store is curated.

major retailers on what they need to do to raise their bottom line. >> with all of the options out there, you need to differentiate yourself as a retailer. >> reporter: take a look at nordstrom's latest retail concept called nordstrom local, a store with no merchandise. that's right, no inventory for sale. shoppers instead can order online and pick up their purchases the same day. the retailer says it's looking for new ways to engage with customers so instead of inventory, it's offering eight different manicure services, on-site refreshment with full beverage menu and personal stylist. wal-mart is beefing up the brands it sells, adding kitchen-aid, yankee candle and bose to its list. and the retail giant plans to throw themed parties over the holiday season to engage its customers. experts say brick and mortar stores are important for any retailer, even e-commerce because it is an invaluable way to win new

south africa's supreme court doubled the prison sentence for disgraced olympian and convicted killer oscar pistorius today. the man known as the blade runner will now serve 13 1/2 years for killing his girlfriend riva back in 2013. the court decided that pistorius never showed any genuine remorse for his crime. he initially received a minimum sentence for manslaughter and was allowed to serve part of it at home. some say his fame helped him get off

an acclaimed singer song writer tommy keen has died. you may not recognize the name, but you've heard his music likely. rem, the goo goo doll, keen worked with all of them. and he grew up right here in bethesda. news4's mark segraves has more on the musical legend. take a look. >> reporter: he's known for helping to create the power pop sound. his emotional song writing, good luxe propelled him to superstar dom. in 1984, he burst into the national scene with his hit, places that are gone. >> he really didn't sound like anyone else. >> reporter: seth kir witnesses who owns the 930 club and the anthem managed his career in the early '80s. roo recalls one of the early bands keen played in, the r aerks z. >> i've seen a lot of bands in my day obviously. they were absolutely to this day one of the best bands ever. not just from
